Day 312

No single person can liberate a country. You can only liberate a country if you act as a collective. — Nelson Mandela

It’s 8: 10 PM on day 312 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself whole-grain bread and avocado for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – ‘Anonymous’
made a donation – thanks Anonymous 🙂  – feed myself chicken briyani for lunch, tweet some more about my campaign – no further luck – watch TV,  feed myself whole-grain bread and avocado for dinner, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

As you know before 1994 South Africa was a very racially divided country and that manifested itself in sports as well – white people only watched and played rugby while black people only watched and played soccer – until 24th June 1995 when Nelson Mandela walked onto the field donning his green and gold jersey – green and gold are South Africa’s national colours – and matching cap to hand over the Webb Ellis Cup – it is tradition that the president of the hosting country hands over the Rugby World Cup trophy – to then Springbok – that’s what we call our rugby team – captain Francois Pienaar and with just forty-nine days to go before we have to defend our title as world champions – the second time around – I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Boks luck and teach those of who know nothing about rugby a little something. Take a look at the video below:

Day 311

Everyone knows something useful which others probably don’t. If you are an expert in your field, use that expertise to blog. Write down what you know most about or what you’re most passionate about. And blog it! Remember, knowledge which is not shared, is useless.Nicky (@rocksstar10 on Twitter)

It’s 8: 28 PM on day 311 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth – twice once before my mother left for work and once after she was in a hurry to leave for work and she didn’t give me time to brush my teeth properly the first time– watch TV, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself chicken briyani for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more–still no luck :(– feed myself for whole-grain bread and avocado for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I was reading If a tragedy happens and nobody cries, is it still a tragedy? on Outrageous Fortune – a blog written by a mother of twins one of whom – Malachi – happens to have Cerebral Palsy – and as I read it I could not help but feel offended and hurt by the insinuations that her son was deficient in some way but this morning I woke up and realized that I should advise rather than criticize so I came up with a list of things that I wish someone had told my parents when I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Take a look

The Do’s and Do’s of Raising a Child with a “Disability”

• Start the necessary therapies e.g. physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy as early as possible so that it will be a part of your child’s lifestyle

• Read as much as you can about your child’s condition

• Get connected with other parents that are facing the same challenges that you are (you know the saying it takes a village to raise a child I think that is particularly true if you’re raising a child with a “disability”)

• Treat your child with a “disability” as you would any of your other children while keeping his/her limitations in mind (in my school days when I got a B in math my parents would pat me on the back and say good job whereas, if my sister got a B you wouldn’t hear the end of it and although I know they were just trying to be supportive the difference in the expectations that they had for my sister and the expectations they had for me really made me feel like they didn’t give a shit (excuse the vulgar language))

• Don’t be too quick to help your child rather push him/her to do things by himself/herself otherwise what’s going to happen to him/her when you’re gone because let’s face it no matter how young you are you will die before him/her (you hope!)

• You’re child sees himself/herself through your eyes so whatever you do, DO NOT pity him/her i.e. if you pity him/her he/she will pity himself/herself.

Day 310

Each one of you has your own platform. Do not let the trappings here fool you. Mine is a stage in a studio, yours is wherever you are with your own reach, however small or however large that reach is.

Maybe it’s 20 people, maybe it’s 30 people, 40 people, your family, your friends, your neighbors, your classmates, your classroom, your co-workers. Wherever you are, that is your platform, your stage, your circle of influence. That is your talk show, and that is where your power lies.

– Oprah Winfrey

It’s 8: 36 PM on day 310 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a hotdog for breakfast, watch a few WordPress tutorial videos – I wanted to know what those widgets in my dashboard were for and I have to say I was AMAZED you can create your own chatroom and do all sorts of other stuff…I LOVE WordPress 🙂 –tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch TV, feed myself oranges for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I was watching an episode of The Tyra Banks Show which focused on her B.I.O (Beauty Inside and Out) Campaign that aims to expand the definition of beauty for women around the world and it was only as I was watching that I realized how narrow the definition of beauty was so in the spirit of creating a change I am asking you to leave comments on this post telling me what you love about the way you look I LOVE my bone structure it’s different but it’s totally unique to me. Are you using your circle of influence to make this world a better place?

Day 309

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change. – Charles Darwin

It’s 7: 55 PM on day 309 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a polony sandwich for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – chat with my Twitter friend @pfellas via Skype –it was actually fantastic I got to see some London sunshine sitting in my own dining room 🙂 – watch TV,  feed myself rice and curry for lunch, go and say goodbye to my uncle and aunty who are leaving for Canada tomorrow, feed myself a McValue Meal for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday my mother told me that our housekeeper would be replaced by the temp if she didn’t show up before August 5th – we need a housekeeper every day because someone has to help me while my parents are at work (oh the joys of having Cerebral Palsy never alone but always just a teensy bit lonely) – and although I had no problem with the temp my first thought was who’s going to deliver the sandwiches to our current housekeeper’s neighborhood every week(if you have no idea what I’m talking about refer to Virginia’s Sandwich Run) then it hit me that I could just as easily have our temp deliver the sandwiches since both her and our current housekeeper live in the same neighborhood my point is sometimes things happen that you don’t expect but that doesn’t mean you have to quit because I truly believe that there is no problem without a solution and no question without an answer. In a world where change is the only constant do you choose to adapt or die?

Day 308

A good leader has the power to unite his party while a great leader has the power to unite the entire country – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8: 44 PM on day 308 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, spend sixty-seven minutes tweeting about South African charities in honour of International Mandela Day – I wanted to go and help out my community but I couldn’t since both my parents were at work so I did what I could for seven different charities 🙂 – read Using Social Media for Charity: @Nisha360 is making a difference on The Nicky Blog and Causes I Promote on Monologues of a Dreamer only stopping to watch Dr. Phil and feed myself a hotdog for brunch – both of them are good posts and I’m not just saying that because I’m featured in ’em :)– tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – watch TV, feed myself tapioca and fish curry for dinner, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

This morning I was watching an extended broadcast of Morning Live – South Africa’s most popular breakfast show – which focused on what people around the country were doing to commemorate International Mandela Day and as I was watching it I realized that more than anything else he’s done Nelson Mandela’s greatest legacy is the oneness his name brings to the South Africa and the world. Are you a good leader or a great one?

Day 307

Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesn’t matter what your mama did; it doesn’t matter what your daddy didn’t do. You are responsible for your life. – Oprah Winfrey

It’s 8: 28 PM on day 307 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself Batura and potato for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature – this week’s Kid of the Week is 7 year-old Dominic Geragi (@Domsters101) who is passionate about animal welfare and keeping the environment clean – feed myself oranges for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck I have a good mind to donate my own money in fact I think I will as soon as it appears in my bank account – read Fading Twilight on writteningold – a blog post which reviewed the four books of the Twilight Saga – I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about reading the series – and Mommy Is A Poopiehead: the speech program on Love That Max – a blog post about doing whatever works to make sure your chldren get where they need to be– feed myself whole-graiin bread and beef fry for dinner, pray with my family – the whole time my father was prayng and reading the bible I kept thinking hypocrite (see why below)– and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday while on the way to have dinner at our cousin’s house my mother told us that there were going to be some people we didn’t know there and she went on to say that we should make a point of greeting them only when we got there my father didn’t see t fit that I greet the aunty so I greeted her husband – there was no way my father could hide me from him because he was sitting in the living room when we arrived – and went to hang out with the kids not thinking much of it until I woke up this morning knowing deep down inside that I shouldn’t let anything I’m going through bother me because I would one day meet presidents and make a HUGE difference in the world. Do you blame everybody for the state that your life is in not knowing that you are the master of your own destiny?

Day 306

Without health life is not life; it is only a state of languor and suffering – an image of death. – Buddha

It’s 10: 47 PM on day 306 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself Batura and potato for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself oranges for lunch, prepare my Kid of the Week feature for tomorrow, tweet about my campaign some more – it’s so depressing it seems like most people care more about Marc Antony and Jlo getting divorced than they do about children dying of hunger and thirst 🙁 – read What Am I Responsible For? on Spiritual Journey of a Lightworker – a very good blog post about letting go of the things you don’t control – have dinner with my extended family – we had heaps of fun playing 30 Seconds – the board game – 🙂 – and brush my teeth once more.

At 4 AM this morning I woke up with an excruciating pain in the left-hand side of my lower back and although the same thing had happened last Friday I took the fact that it happened a second time as a sign that I should change my lifestyle – replacing all the “white foods” e.g. pasta and rice with “brown foods” e.g. whole-grain pasta and brown rice eliminating carbonated drinks, chips and fast food and adding fruits and vegetables to my diet in conjunction with thirty minutes of exercise daily – and it is my greatest hope that you will follow in my footsteps more or less making your own replacements, eliminations and additions as you go along. Are you taking care of your health so that you can live life to the fullest?

Day 305

You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others. – Oprah Winfrey

It’s 7: 55 PM on day 305 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a banana for breakfast, watch TV, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – I decided not to spent too much time tweeting today because my brother was complaining that I was being selfish with the laptop I tried to explain to him that I was trying to change the world but he’s ten I doubt he cared LOL 🙂 – spend some time with my family and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday on the last episode of her show Oprah said all life is energy and for the life of me I didn’t know she meant until this morning when I woke up and realized that the feeling you give to someone even before you say a word or vice-versa was energy which explained why I felt (and still feel) drained when I’m with my father, sorrowful when my I’m with my mother and resentful when I’m with my siblings. Is the energy you create for yourself and bring to others consistent with the vision you have for your life?

Day 304

Famous has become a synonym for hero – that’s what I learned today 🙁

It’s 9: 05 PM on day 304 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, watch TV, feed myself Batura and potato curry for breakfast, listen to music feed myself tapioca dipped in chutney for lunch, watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 at the Hemingways Mall – it was truly the end of an era when the credits rolled and faded to black it occurred to me that there would never be another Harry Potter movie ever again – go visit my cousin, brush my teeth once more, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – and watch The Oprah Winfrey Show Finale in primetime – good bye Oprah thank you SO much for all you’ve taught me from my daily routine of keeping a gratitude journal to my love of service you’ve molded me into the woman I always knew I was meant to be and for that I will be eternally grateful 🙂

Yesterday I logged onto MSN with the intention of checking my mail when an article entitled Emma’s Fashion Magic – detailing the history of Emma Watson’s fashion choices – caught my eye and as I was reading it I realized that the media took ordinary people and portrayed them as heroes thus confusing the world’s population as to what a hero really is with that said I would like to tell you what I believe makes someone a hero you are a hero if you walk the elderly across the street, you are hero if you feed the homeless in your community, you are a hero if you take in a stray dog that has nowhere else to go, you are hero if you offer to babysit for free for a single mom who is overworked and underappreciated in short you are a hero if you extended yourself in service of the world. If you had to choose between fame and heroism would your choice be easy?

Day 303

You see there’s always another story, another side to every coin
And how you see your circumstance is all about a choice.

– From the song Jesus Calling by 33 Miles

It’s 8: 52 PM on day 303 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself toast, eggs, sausages and tomatoes for breakfast, watch TV, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet some more about my campaign – today was a productive day I asked some of my friends to write blog posts about me and set up an interview 🙂 – read South African woman uses social media to build well for people without clean water – the published version of interview I did with @JeniseFryatt – thanks Jenise you did a GREAT job 🙂 – answer Nicky’s interview questions – I asked my friend Nicky to write a blog post about me and my campaign on The Nicky Blog and she suggested an interview instead and I have to say the girl knows her stuff 🙂 – feed myself Batura and chicken curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday we visited a friend and just before we left she said Neethu – my sister – good luck with the decisions you have to make – referring to the decision she has to make about what she wants to be after she matriculates next year – and then she turned to me and said as if to include me in the conversation Nisha you must help her with those decisions and in that moment I realized that people would always perceive me as my sister’s aid and not as a person of my own just because of my disability and the life I chose which I have now decided is not necessarily a bad thing because I have the element of surprise on my side. Do you choose to see every circumstance as a blessing no matter what it appears to be?
