Day 377

The best gift you can give your children is something that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 9: 49 PM on day 377 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee in a glass, go to church with my mother, sister and brother–the sermon was entitled When your ‘yes’ means nothing it was about the importance of  keeping your word and having the humility to admit you’re wrong when you are wrong – feed myself All-Bran Flakes for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck  okay to be truthful I only tweeted once the whole day the rest was automated by me last night–  finish reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – it was AWESOME it had everything I’ve ever wanted in a book… action, adventure and romance I can’t wait to finish reading the whole series – go to drop my grandma off at my uncle’s house – she was with us while my uncle and his wife were out of town anyway while we were there our priest popped by and my dad made a fau paux he bolted for the door before the priest had a chance to pray (Indian priests always pray when people leave to go somewhere regardless of the distance) luckily he said let’s pray before my dad stepped out the door –  and brush my teeth once more.

Today while at church I thought for all my mother’s faults she gave me Jesus and because of that I never felt like a fatherless child even though my father is a class A jerk – he has made it abundantly clear through his actions that although he may love me he is also ashamed of me because I have Cerebral Palsy – and to her I say thank you mommy. What have been the best gifts that your parents have passed onto you?

Day 374

No one is above discrimination – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 35 PM on day 374 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a boiled egg and a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, practice writing with my hand, watch The Rugby World Cup match: South Africa vs. Namibia – we won 🙂 –  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck –prepare my Disability of the Day feature, compile a post for Youth Voices–a section of NorthFork Collective Voices headed by my friend, Mark McKinney –prepare my Kid of the Week feature for Sunday, feed myself spaghetti bolognaise for lunch,  continue reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, watch TV, feed myself oranges for dinner, brush my teeth once more and publish my Disability of the Day feature.

Yesterday while my father was talking to one of his old school friends online he said my eldest daughter is twenty and has a small problem… a small disability and I was mortified because I would never say to a friend of mine who I haven’t spoken to in years my father is forty something and has this, that and the other because I know that the medical conditions he has doesn’t make him who he is I just wish he had extended me the same courtesy but whatever. Would you discriminate against your children if they were different in some way?

Day 355

Be careful what you wish for
cause you just might get it all
you just might get it all and then some you don’t want.
– Chris Daughtry

It’s 7: 12 PM on day 355 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself toast, chicken nuggets and scrambled eggs for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – listen to music, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, go with my father to drop my mother, brother and sister at different places, cry for a while– my mom asked my dad to carry something for her into the building that she was going into, he said no, she said if any other woman had asked you would do it and before I knew it he was lunging at her (Note to mom and dad: mommy if you have problems go see a psychiatrist I can’t be your confidant and dad I will no longer go above and beyond to protect your reputation if you choose to behave in this manner you have to be willing to deal with the consequences) – go with my father to fetch my mother, brother and sister from different places, tweet about my campaign some more–still no luck I tweeted facts about water to achieve objective #2 of my campaign to highlight the plight of those who don’t have easy access to water– feed myself an avocado sandwich for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Last summer I wanted so badly to go to India for my cousin’s wedding and now that it’s been decided that we are going this summer I don’t know what to feel because I know that it’s going to be hard for me when I get there not just in terms of accessibility but also in terms of my father and just people in general – my father rarely takes me anywhere here in South Africa where people are exposed to and educated about disabilities I wonder how he’s going to act when we get to his home state of Kerala where people have little or no exposure to people who are different. Have you ever wished for something and got it only to wish that you had never wished for it in the first place?

Day 354

The show must go no matter what– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 33 PM on day 354 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, make some sandwiches on behalf of Virginia’s Sandwich Run with the help of our housekeeper– I was sticky and messy by the end of it but it was for a good cause 🙂  –    feed myself an avocado sandwich  for brunch, prepare my Kid of the Week feature for Sunday, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck –   feed myself grilled chicken for dinner and watch TV.

As many of you know my family has been going through a rough patch of late – first my brother was hospitalized and then almost a week later my grandma (she has now been moved to a rehab center) – and because of that I put making sandwiches for our housekeeper’s neighborhood – if you have no idea what I’m talking about refer to Virginia’s Sandwich Run – on hold but this week I realized that me sitting here not helping people wasn’t helping anyone least of all my grandma who I haven’t see in four weeks – I asked my father to take me but as per usual he said no I still can’t understand how a father can be ashamed his child because she has a medical condition – so today I am going to make sandwiches in honour of both sets of my grandparents – both my grandmothers are still alive – Virginia, Joseph uncle – my father’s friend who died a couple of years ago – Brennan and Rachel. Do you stop your life when something unexpected happens?

Day 347

People who feel bad about themselves will try and bring you down any which way they know – that’s what I learned today 🙁

It’s 8 :06 PM on day 347 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – struck out – listen to music, feed myself Batura and vegetable curry for breakfast, tweet about my campaign some more– no luck but on the plus side my friend, Bonnie Squires, has been doing a great job spreading the word – thanks Bonnie 🙂 –  feed myself oranges for lunch,  go to physiotherapy, continue to tweet about my campaign – still no luck – and  feed myself oranges for dinner.

This morning as my father was wheeling me to the bathroom he said how many of those people donated money to your campaign after you posted a notice up on our community’s website – if you have no idea what I’m talking about refer to Day 301 – and I was honest and said one he took that as an opening to say I told you not to ask for money from those people which wouldn’t have been so bad if he actually played an active role in my life – I kid you not he helps my mother take me to the bathroom (when my sister and the housekeeper aren’t available), drives me to my physiotherapist’s appointment every two weeks and pays the bills (all of which I’m VERY grateful for) that’s about the extent of his involvement in my life – although now that a few hours have passed since what he said I realize that I am more flabbergasted than hurt – if I were in my father’s shoes I would say to my child who keep in mind has more challenges than most I am SO proud of you for putting others before yourself in spite of what you go through every day instead of constantly trying to tear her down. Have you ever met someone with such low esteem that they have to make you feel bad just to make themselves feel better?

Day 328

The only courage you really need is the courage to stand by your actions– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8:41 PM on day 328 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an avocado sandwich for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – read Little WondersA day in the life of Reagan and A New Kind of Perfect – all of the blogs although told different stories illustrated the triumph of the human spirit–  feed myself spaghetti bolognese for lunch – it got a bit messy but I did it 🙂 – and continue reading Love Virtually by Daniel Glattauer.

Last night my father found out that I posted a notice about my campaign on our community’s website (if you have no idea what I’m talking about refer to Day 301) and just as I expected he TOTALLY freaked going on like I murdered somebody saying now people are going think I am using you to collect money email them and ask them to take it down to which after I initially considered following his orders said I stand by my actions if you want them to take it down you’ve got to call and ask them to do it yourself – he did but the guy wasn’t there after which he reconsidered – and that I guess is my message to all of you guys if you know that you’re doing the right thing don’t let anybody make you apologize. Do you courageously stand by your actions because you know that you’re doing the right thing or say I’m sorry for doing that at the first sign of disapproval?

Day 307

Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesn’t matter what your mama did; it doesn’t matter what your daddy didn’t do. You are responsible for your life. – Oprah Winfrey

It’s 8: 28 PM on day 307 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself Batura and potato for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature – this week’s Kid of the Week is 7 year-old Dominic Geragi (@Domsters101) who is passionate about animal welfare and keeping the environment clean – feed myself oranges for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck I have a good mind to donate my own money in fact I think I will as soon as it appears in my bank account – read Fading Twilight on writteningold – a blog post which reviewed the four books of the Twilight Saga – I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about reading the series – and Mommy Is A Poopiehead: the speech program on Love That Max – a blog post about doing whatever works to make sure your chldren get where they need to be– feed myself whole-graiin bread and beef fry for dinner, pray with my family – the whole time my father was prayng and reading the bible I kept thinking hypocrite (see why below)– and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday while on the way to have dinner at our cousin’s house my mother told us that there were going to be some people we didn’t know there and she went on to say that we should make a point of greeting them only when we got there my father didn’t see t fit that I greet the aunty so I greeted her husband – there was no way my father could hide me from him because he was sitting in the living room when we arrived – and went to hang out with the kids not thinking much of it until I woke up this morning knowing deep down inside that I shouldn’t let anything I’m going through bother me because I would one day meet presidents and make a HUGE difference in the world. Do you blame everybody for the state that your life is in not knowing that you are the master of your own destiny?

Day 302

The most critical choice you’ll ever make is the one you make about what you’re going to do with this. The past is over. The future hasn’t happened yet. The only time is now. – Dr. Phil C. McGraw

It’s 7: 58 PM on day 302 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself bananas for breakfast, watch TV, feed myself Spaghetti bolognaise for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – and go visit some friends – it was so much fun they are such funny people 🙂

Yesterday I was watching an episode of Oprah – we’re a bit behind so it still airs here – on which a nineteen-year-old boy by the name of Clayton was featured – he was severally abused up to the age of six his father urinated on him rubbed his own feces’ in his faced nd locked him up in the bathroom closet – and yet he said I treat everybody with respect even if they don’t deserve it and although I didn’t think much of it at the time this morning I woke up and I remembered the time when my father lifted the chair I was sitting on to hit my mother in victory rather than in fear because I realized that I would never be five and powerless ever again. Are you stuck in a chapter of your life with no way out?

Day 296

You teach people how to treat you. – Dr. Phil C. McGraw

It’s 10: 23 PM on day 296 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  feed myself toast, mutton sausage and fried tomatoes for breakfast, watch TV, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, do some research on Dementia – it breaks my heart to see my granny becoming less and less of herself and unfortunately it seems that all I can do is sit back and watch because the treatment options for Dementia are very limited 🙁 – read two of the most recent post on Love That Max and Top 9 why you should blog on The Nicky Blog  – all the blog posts I read were very good but since I’d never read Nicky’s blog before naturally I was more excited to read that and the fact that I could attest to the 9 reasons why you should blog made it all the better 🙂 – tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – yesterday evening Tana (@woveneye3) made a PayPal donation which I will donate to my campaign on her behalf ASAP and Bonnie (@bonnie67) made two more donations – you guys are AWESOME thank you SO much for your support 🙂 – play host to my extended family who came over for dinner – my aunt almost ended up in tears when my father said grandma didn’t remember the names of her girl children because they didn’t take of her my father didn’t mean anything by it but I saw my aunt’s face when he said that and she was REALLY hurt 🙁 – and brush my teeth once more.

Last night after we came back from dinner at my uncle’s a community member of ours – let’s call him M – called and said he would be coming to our house in ten minutes to borrow our GPS and immediately my dad said with urgency to no one in particular M is coming take Nisha to the other room and in that moment instead of feel less than and going to my room like I usually did I said rather nonchalantly what’s wrong if I’m here to which he responded oh no nothing I just thought you wanted to pee which I did not believe for a second but for the sake of keeping the peace I let it go and asked my mother to help me in the bathroom. Have you taught people to treat you badly?

Day 288

You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. – Dr. Phil C. McGraw

It’s 8: 35 PM on day 288 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck 🙁 – read Love That Max and Ryn’s Tale Book of Days: Livin to the point of tears – my goodness there are some FANTASTIC parents out there 🙂 –  watch TV while feeding myself an egg sandwich for brunch, watch some TV while exercising, publish My Book Self – a new page on this blog which will feature all the books that I can remember reading over the course of my twenty year life – feed myself rice and curry for dinnerand brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday evening while I was editing and adding new books to My Book Shelf I couldn’t help but notice that all but four of the books that I had ever read were romance novels and in that moment I had an epiphany I was looking for love in guys – both fictional and real – because I did not feel loved by father and to remedy that I told myself what I wished my father had told me you’re beautiful I am so proud of you. Are you in denial about what you need?
