Day 286

Gratitude is the memory of the heart. ~Jean Baptiste Massieu

It’s 7: 21 PM on day 286 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, get one hand out of my jersey’s sleeve – I have got to show my mother that if she continues to help me I’ll either end up institutionalized or worse being a burden on my siblings – spend some time with my cousin – some of things he says about gay people makes me cringe but I still love him like a brother 🙂 – feed myself bun, potato salad and beef curry for brunch, publish my Kid of the Week feature tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – read Do you know where you are going? by Janet Callaway (@janetcallaway) – a very well written and honest blog post about how to get where you’re going in your life 🙂 – and feed myself bun and grilled chicken for dinner.

Yesterday my father was talking to cousin and saying stuff like we don’t go anywhere, we don’t do anything, we don’t earn a lot of money and in that moment I realized that he would never have enough of anything because he couldn’t see what he already had. Do you have amnesia of the heart?

Day 285

A good book on your shelf is a friend that turns its back on you and remains a friend. ~Author Unknown

It’s 6: 35 PM on day 285 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an egg– sunny side up – and toast for breakfast, listen to music, read And God Laughs and  Little Wonders–the first blog I could totally relate too while the second one I LOVED because I could feel the love this mom of five had for her family in every word she wrote 🙂 – tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – after thirteen LONG days the donation drought is finally over ‘Anonymous’ made a donation – thank you Anonymous 🙂 –   feed myself rice and curry for lunch, prepare my Kid of the Week feature for tomorrow – this week’s ‘Kid of the Week’ and I have something in common stay tuned to see what it is 🙂 – listen to music some more,  feed myself bun, potato salad and grilled chicken for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

A few weeks ago I launched my reading challenge and asked you to read one book per week for the entire year and in keeping with the theme of reading I will be creating a new page on this blog which will feature all the books that I can remember reading over the course of my twenty year life because I believe that someone who reads is more likely to act in the face of injustice because he/she has learned empathy. Do you have friends yet to be discovered and shared sitting right on your book self?

Day 284

When you fight something, you’re tied to it forever. As long as you’re fighting it, you’re giving it power. – Anthony de Mello

It’s 7: 42 PM on day 284 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself cheese puffs for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – thirteen days and counting 🙁 – read Blogzilly and Single Dad, Disabled Daughter – the first blog made me sad because my heart yearned for a dad like that while the second blog left me awestruck because I couldn’t imagine what it was like for a father to raise his disabled daughter by himself 🙂 –  watch TV, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch some more TV and feed myself rice and curry for dinner.

As you know Osama Bin Laden was killed a few weeks ago and although I am glad that there is one less evil person in the world I also know that Osama himself was only a figurehead in that he already had a successor in place in the event of his death and I have no doubt that his successor also has a successor and so on and so on my point is the only way to combat terrorism is through planting the seeds of oneness in the heart of every human being. Do you fight for peace or fight against war?

Day 283

Being a parent is about allowing your children to be who they truly are– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8: 58 PM on day 283 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, read Love That Max, Chasing Rainbow and Outrageous Fortune – the first two blogs I read I’ve read a few times while I had never even heard of the third although I have to admit it was really heart-warming to read about this woman’s appreciation of her husband before I read that post I really thought that marriage was just another form of imprisonment but after reading that I’m beginning to change my mind 🙂 – watch TV, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck but I am hopeful because someone promised to make a donation later today 🙂 – feed myself grilled fish, potatoes and salad for dinner, and brush my teeth once more.

Today after my brother left for school in tears my mother came into my room and said I should stop asking him what J’s – his friend’s – marks are maybe that’s why he’s sad and in that moment I was SO angry that I said you love your children for what they can do and not who they are to which she responded if that was true I wouldn’t love you which suffice to say hurt my feelings. Do you love your children for who they truly are or for what they can do to bolster your image in society’s eyes?

Day 282

Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm. – Sir Winston Churchill

It’s 7: 47 PM on day 282 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself French fries and a mango sandwich for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – eleven days and counting without a donation – watch TV, tweet about my campaign – no luck –  feed myself rice and curry for lunch, email Salt & Necter – I figured since they wrote about Oprah’s final show they would be willing to write about someone who was inspired by Oprah 🙂 – feed myself rice and curry for dinner, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

Two days ago I received an email in response to my sponsorship request (if you have no idea what I’m talking about refer ‘Day 277’) and it read in part Please may you send through a formal letter with a letter head as PnP only support charity organizations and not individuals. and although I was severely bummed out at the time I now realize that real change comes from the actions of ordinary people such as you and I so I am asking you to spread the word about Virginia’s Sandwich Run and donate if you can. Do you fail at everything you do because you give up the first time you hear a no?

Day 281

If you follow you cannot lead – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 53 PM on day 281 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an French fries and cheese puffs for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – watch TV, tweet about my campaign some more – no luck – listen to Advice by Christina Grimmie (@TheRealGrimmie) –that song is everything I ever wanted to say to all the young girls out there (see video below) – feed myself tapioca and beef curry for lunch, continue to tweet about my campaign – still no luck  – feed myself rice and curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today my brother asked my parents if he could stay home from school because his friends had bunked yesterday and on Friday and although my parents obliged him my father said this before he left if you’re staying home because you’re sick I won’t force you to go but if you’re doing this because you’re friends did it’s your life… one day your friends might start drinking will you join them and that I guess is a question for all of us am I willing to sacrifice doing what I know is right just to belong. Do you follow the crowd or choose to forge your own path?

Day 280

It always seems impossible until it is done. – Nelson Mandela

It’s 6: 51 PM on day 280 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an French fries and a polony sandwich for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – watch TV, tweet and Facebook about my campaign – no luck but at least I know that I know that I did EVERYTHING I could to make a difference 🙂 – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, continue to tweet about my campaign – still no luck but hey tomorrow is another day 🙂 – feed myself boiled tapioca and beef curry for dinner, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

As I’ve mentioned in one of my previous posts being an Indian girl/woman means your whole life is planned out for you, you grow up, go to school, go to university, get a job, get married, have 2-3 kids and live out the rest of your life there are no shortcuts or detours which is why I nearly fell off my chair when I found out yesterday that my cousin was going to Europe on vacation although now that I think about it this is what I would have said if I were talking to her on the phone thank you for leading the way maybe now someday when I have enough money and want to go on vacation mommy and daddy won’t have a problem with it. Do you have it in you to be like my cousin and do something that has never been done before?

Day 279

Each one of us are God’s representatives – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 50 PM on day 279 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, go to church – the sermon was entitled The Spirit of Truth and was all about how you can’t walk in God’s light if you’re dishonest – feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature, feed myself French fries for lunch, read The Importance of Value by Veronica (@VeronicaSchultz)– a blog post about the fact that you can change your reality just by changing what you say to yourself – and The Big Bad Baby Post by Katy (@birdonthestreet) – a blog post about two two new lives that have recently entered our world 🙂 –   tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck– feed myself rice and curry  for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

I woke up today having made up my mind that I wouldn’t wish my father a happy father’s day because quite frankly I didn’t think he deserved it but after hearing 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.– John 14: 8-11 – I realized that I should be the bigger person and wished him a happy father’s day as soon as I got back from church. Are you a good representative of God?

Day 278

You should celebrate the lives of legends while they’re still alive – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 45 PM on day 278 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, drink coffee, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck– feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more – still no luck 🙁 –prepare my Kid of the Week feature for tomorrow, go visit my cousin who had just come back home from university – he wasn’t there he went to the movies with our niece and nephew so we entertained ourselves by watching TV while the adults talked in the living room – feed myself McDonald chicken nuggets and French fries for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

As you know I hold Nelson Mandela in VERY high esteem which is why with only a month to go till his 93rd birthday I have created Happy 93rd Birthday Mr. Nelson Mandela – a Facebook page where people can post messages, pictures etc and share their love for Mr. Mandela with the world – and am asking you to participate. Do the legends of your life before need to die before you recognize them as such?

Day 277

Don’t sweat the small stuff– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 21 PM on day 277 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, go to the Home Affairs office to apply for my passport it is said to expire on the 26th of this month – I had to go back to the photographer because I smiled in my pictures the first time around and apparently you’re not supposed to do that for your passport… weird, right? 🙂 – feed myself chicken biryani for lunch, go to physiotherapy – it was super uncomfortable and yet again it was my fault for not exercising for the past two weeks – email Pick n Pay – a big chain store in South Africa – a sponsorship proposal – I tweeted them asking them if they would be interested in donating supplies to Virginia’s Sandwich Run and they emailed me asking me to send them a formal letter (see below) – I am SO excited 🙂 – feed myself chicken biryani for dinner while watching TV, brush my teeth once more and tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – still no luck 🙁 –

Today as I stepped up to take my thumbprint because apparently the signature on my passport application wasn’t good enough I realized that all the time I spent in the car depressed over the fact that I couldn’t sign my own name was because I didn’t want to be different which was stupid because I was different. Are you risking your health, wealth and emotional happiness by obsessing over your small disabilities?

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Nisha Varghese, I am a 20-year-old from East London who started making sandwiches for my housekeeper’s neighborhood in an effort to end hunger in my community and I would like Pick n Pay to be the chief sponsor of this initiative which currently feeds 17 people a week. Any assistance you could provide in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Nisha Varghese
