Day 332

It is not good to know more unless we do more with what we already know. – Bergethon, R. K

It’s 7: 49 PM on day 332 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, watch and donate to the telethon held to raise money for the people of Somalia – I already made my donation to the World Food Programme but I didn’t tell my father that and coaxed him into making anotther donation because I wanted to teach my sister the joy of giving anyway coming back to the telethon 1.2 million rand was raised I am SO proud to be South African today 🙂 – feed myself banana for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – visit my favourite blogs Love That Max, Chasing Rainbows and Bird on the Street,  feed myself rice and fried fish for lunch, watch TV, feed myself pasta and fried chicken for dinner, brush my teeth once more and help my brother act out the play that he wrote.

Yesterday as I was writing a post publicizing the telethon that took place this morning (if you have no idea what I’m talking about refer to Day 331) I realized that the SABC – South African Broadcasting Corporation – although had the best intentions in wanting to raise money for the people of Somalia were a bit lacking in the knowledge of how to use the internet to publicize the upcoming telethon – I spent hours online looking for the telethon phone number eventually giving up and deciding to wait until the telethon was going on to add the number to my post – so today I am going to give you some tips on how to make the internet work for the philanthropist in you because I believe that knowledge is most powerful when it is shared. Take a look:

How to use the internet to raise awareness and money for your favorite charity: Things I wish someone had told me before I entered the world of philanthropy

  • Make sure that the charity you support is registered – most charities will display a tax/EIN number on their respective websites if they don’t email them and ask for it
  • Find out whether your charity is linked to a fundraising website e.g. Firstgiving, Justgiving, My Charity Page – the advantage of using a fundraising page to raise money for charity is that you as the fundraiser don’t have to do anything – it’s fully automated – and there’s the added benefit of being able to receive donations from all over the world twenty-four hours a day with the only disadvantage being that the fundraising website gets to keep a small percentage of whatever you raise
  • Set up social media accounts e.g. Twitter, Facebook and connect with people who can identify with you – you will often find me asking people who have been affected by disability to make donations to my campaign because I know that they know how hard my life is.
  • Create a chain – mingle with the people that your donors interact with and tell them about what your trying to do chances are that they will donate too and when that happens you have to start the process up again and so on and so on
  • Don’t pester people – if someone says that they can’t donate to your cause for whatever reason accept that with grace and move on don’t keep sending them Facebook messages/tweets they will get very irritated with you and unfriend/unfollow you

Day 322

My path has not been determined. I shall have more experiences and pass many more milestones. – Agnetha Faltskog

It’s 8: 58 PM on day 322 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to feed myself an oranges for breakfast, brush my teeth, hang out with my brother and cheer him on as he blew up a balloon – he came back home after a five day hospital stay and the physiotherapist suggested he blew up balloons to increase his lung capacity –feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch TV, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself an avocado sandwich for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

As you may or may not know today is the official first anniversary of this blog – I say official because I actually started this blog on July 11, 2010 but back I was interviewing women around the world to see what they’re lives which suffice to say didn’t work out – and in honour of that I would like to thank everyone for reading and share with you some of the comments – including those I’ve received via Facebook and Twitter – people have made about this blog over the past 365 days. Submitted on 2011/01/11 at 3:46 am Just WOW… Congrats on taking something that must have been so hurtful & turning it into a positive. I never struggled w/ allowing ppl to define me, it was always my past… the family that I came from, the abuse, chaos, traumas, etc.,etc., etc., I became ashamed and I learned last year (in therapy) that shame
was keeping me sick… so I have been stepping out in who I am TODAY &
being thankful, too. *Big Hugs* to you!!!

Many of us are considered “normal”, yet what is normal… Though we may not have an outward or physical disability, we are all disabled in some way, for me it is “financial disability”. Yet, the experiences I have(past and present), motivate and inspire me to share with others faith and hope… You are an inspiration to me and many will benefit from your incredible perseverance , you have chosen wisely. Submitted on 2011/03/14 at 1:17 pm Truly a wonderful post Nisha. When we are surrounded by those who are anything less than caring it may very well cause us to feel uncared for, unwanted, and maybe even unloved at times. We have all experienced this at a time in our lives. Having esteem in ourselves can carry us through, so true.Given the same experience, I may ask to be taken home and not left in a car and hope that my needs, wants and desires will be respected

Hi, Nisha, thanks for accepting my friend request. I am really enjoying your blog. When I first read your introduction, I have to say my heart soared. I’ve met so many young people who lead very self-centered lives and sometimes I get very pessimistic about the future because of that. So when I read your story, it really lifted my spirits to know that there are young people who want to help others and make a the world a better place. When you are stuck at home, perhaps you can think how you are making a difference in people’s lives in distant places…not only the people you will help with clean water, but the people who are inspired or given hope by your work. In that way, you’ve already made your mark in St.Louis, Missouri, USA. :>)

Yours truly,

Galen

 Hi Nisha

I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but when i read your blogs they make me smile and laugh. Reason being is because of my rite arm being fracture twice and the bone thinning plus arthritis in it and it shakes all the time

.I have trouble opening things and our kids want to do it open what ever i’m trying to open. I look at them and say i’m not helpless. Just knowing i’m not the only one going threw things like this makes it so much easier to cope. Because others don’t understand what your going threw.

Have a wonderful day my friend

It gives me hope for how well-written my own son might be one day.Being a parent is immensely hard. You don’t ever get to “win” because what is a “successful” person? Defining success is very different now that I am faced with a son with a disability. Cut your mom some slack! Then remind her that love is the most important thing.Good luck with our campaign, too. I retweeted about it!

That’s THE best! Good luck on your journey. I hope it has turned into a little bit of fun. Pain is the worst. Chronic pain worse than that! You made me smile. You have a fun spirit.

Day 280

It always seems impossible until it is done. – Nelson Mandela

It’s 6: 51 PM on day 280 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an French fries and a polony sandwich for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – watch TV, tweet and Facebook about my campaign – no luck but at least I know that I know that I did EVERYTHING I could to make a difference 🙂 – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, continue to tweet about my campaign – still no luck but hey tomorrow is another day 🙂 – feed myself boiled tapioca and beef curry for dinner, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

As I’ve mentioned in one of my previous posts being an Indian girl/woman means your whole life is planned out for you, you grow up, go to school, go to university, get a job, get married, have 2-3 kids and live out the rest of your life there are no shortcuts or detours which is why I nearly fell off my chair when I found out yesterday that my cousin was going to Europe on vacation although now that I think about it this is what I would have said if I were talking to her on the phone thank you for leading the way maybe now someday when I have enough money and want to go on vacation mommy and daddy won’t have a problem with it. Do you have it in you to be like my cousin and do something that has never been done before?

Day 278

You should celebrate the lives of legends while they’re still alive – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 45 PM on day 278 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, drink coffee, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck– feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more – still no luck 🙁 –prepare my Kid of the Week feature for tomorrow, go visit my cousin who had just come back home from university – he wasn’t there he went to the movies with our niece and nephew so we entertained ourselves by watching TV while the adults talked in the living room – feed myself McDonald chicken nuggets and French fries for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

As you know I hold Nelson Mandela in VERY high esteem which is why with only a month to go till his 93rd birthday I have created Happy 93rd Birthday Mr. Nelson Mandela – a Facebook page where people can post messages, pictures etc and share their love for Mr. Mandela with the world – and am asking you to participate. Do the legends of your life before need to die before you recognize them as such?

Day 267

If you can get paid for doing what you love, every paycheck is a bonus. – Oprah Winfrey

It’s 7: 00 PM on day 267 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a polony sandwich for breakfast watch TV, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck I have to try something different prayer, sponsorship etc because it’s obvious that social media won’t carry me to the finish line :(– feed myself pasta and sauce for dinner, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday Bonnie (@Bonnie67) sent me a Facebook message which said in part I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but when I read your blogs they make me smile and laugh. Reason being is because of my right arm being fracture twice and the bone thinning plus arthritis in it and it shakes all the time. I have trouble opening things and our kids want to do it open whatever I’m trying to open. I look at them and say I’m not helpless. Just knowing I’m not the only one going through things like this makes it so much easier to cope. Because others don’t understand what you’re going through. and when I read that I couldn’t help feeling as though I had succeeded in my life because although I REALLY appreciate the money I make from this blog the reason I started blogging in the first place was to share my life and make people feel less alone. Is your paycheck a bonus or the only reason you show up for work in the morning?

Day 257

People’s perceptions of me aren’t personal – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8: 01 PM on day 257 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a chicken hotdog for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck –send Oprah a thank-you email for everything she’s taught me – I know what you’re thinking I didn’t ask for a donation I didn’t want to be another one of those people who just wanted something from her I’ll find another way to raise the rest of the money 🙂 – send messages to my Facebook friends asking them to spread the word about my campaign, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch a few YouTube videos about water, watch TV while feeding myself Custard, tweet about my campaign some more – still no luck 🙁 – and brush my teeth once more.

Today a well respected couple in the community came to visit us and the aunty waltzed into my room and said – in the presence of mother – you will walk, you will work and you will be healed I will pray for you promise me you will trust and in that moment I realized that she didn’t think I could live a full and happy life in a wheelchair which forced me to suppress my laughter and say I promise. Do you take everything people say to you to heart or choose to filter out ignorance?

Day 251

I am not as perfect as I thought I was – that’s what I learned today 🙁

It’s 7: 25 PM on day 251 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to finish reading A Purloined Life – the first of two books in Stella Cameron‘s Charmed – it was a typical romance novel … so predictable 🙁 – brush my teeth, feed myself two-minute noodles for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature featuring 12-year-old Elliot Mast (@elliotmast) – Elliot’s such a sweet boy he sent a short and sweet thank-you note a few hours later – Elliot as I said in my reply I am SO proud of you 🙂 – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch TV, tweet and Facebook about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck – feed myself Chapati for dinner and continue to tweet and Facebook about campaign – still no luck 🙁

As you know I pride myself on honest but today when my father looked at my bank balance and said you only have a $100 in here I felt like a loser so I responded by saying I’ll get more money next week advertisers are paying me – I lied – but now I realize that I had no reason to lie and that it’s okay to make mistakes once in a while. Have you ever said or done something that has shattered your self-image?

Day 250

Love doesn’t hurt. – Oprah Winfrey

It’s 6: 57 PM on day 250 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a bread and chicken curry for breakfast, watch TV – a huge shoutout to Bridgit Mendler & Co of Lemonade Mouth – a movie about owning who you are standing up for what you believe in–you guys did a great job 🙂 – tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck – feed myself rice and carry for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more – no luck – feed myself Chapati and chicken curry for dinner and continue to tweet and Facebook about campaign – still no luck 🙁

Today my mom and dad were arguing and when he had left she said something along the lines of why does he care so much about other people he’s got a sick child – me – and another one about to go off to university soon and by that time I had already had it up to here with my mom because I realized that no matter what I did with my life I would always be the “sick” child in her eyes and you know what all I have to say to that there’s more to being a mother than taking me to the bathroom and serving me three meals a day sometimes I just need to know that you love me for who I am and not who I could have been. Is your version of love wounding your children?

Day 248

Appreciation consists of words and action – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 40 PM on day 248 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck but @laurajteacheroz (Laura) promised to donate $50 if 50 people donated $10 each – thanks Laura 🙂 – feed myself a polony sandwich for breakfast, tweet about my campaign some more –still no luck :(– feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch TV, continue reading A Purloined Life – the first of two books in Stella Cameron‘s Charmed, feed myself Batura for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today I was sitting at my laptop doing something when the memory of a comment left on my Facebook wall post which read you’re a star came flooding back to me and in that moment I felt so angry because the woman who left that comment after reading an article about me was the very same woman who wouldn’t return any of my messages when I sent her a donation request so naturally I wasn’t exactly feeling the love although I did thank her in the interest of being polite. Do you talk the talk but fail to walk the walk?

Day 245

You should stop trying to get new people to see the real you and start appreciating those who already do – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8: 46 PM on day 245 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a chicken hotdog for breakfast, tweet and Facebook about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more – wow the power of prayer never ceases to amaze me @bonuschief (Frank) made a donation – thanks God and Frank 🙂 – feed myself an orange for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today I was reading In the inner circle, there’s no “weird” by Ellen (see excerpt below) – an American mother who has a son with Cerebral Palsy – and I realized that whenever I met new people I was trying to get them to see the real me but no more if you can accept me in the rapper that I’m in then I’ll welcome you with open arms if not, don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Do you try to get new people to like you or choose to hang out with people who already do?

I have been thinking a lot lately about how people see Max. This is not simply because I want him to fit in, so to speak. I ache for people to look beyond his disabilities and see the charming, funny, smart, complex kid I know. I want them to see Max, all of Max. Not just a child with cerebral palsy.

Then I got a grip: In the special needs community, there is no such thing as weird. For the people at the programs we go to, the teachers at Max’s school, the therapists in his life: quirky is the norm. I may have a ways to go to get the world at large to see the wonderfulness of Max. But in the inner circle of special needs that we inhabit, he is who he is—and people usually adore him for it.
