Day 307

Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesn’t matter what your mama did; it doesn’t matter what your daddy didn’t do. You are responsible for your life. – Oprah Winfrey

It’s 8: 28 PM on day 307 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself Batura and potato for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature – this week’s Kid of the Week is 7 year-old Dominic Geragi (@Domsters101) who is passionate about animal welfare and keeping the environment clean – feed myself oranges for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck I have a good mind to donate my own money in fact I think I will as soon as it appears in my bank account – read Fading Twilight on writteningold – a blog post which reviewed the four books of the Twilight Saga – I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about reading the series – and Mommy Is A Poopiehead: the speech program on Love That Max – a blog post about doing whatever works to make sure your chldren get where they need to be– feed myself whole-graiin bread and beef fry for dinner, pray with my family – the whole time my father was prayng and reading the bible I kept thinking hypocrite (see why below)– and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday while on the way to have dinner at our cousin’s house my mother told us that there were going to be some people we didn’t know there and she went on to say that we should make a point of greeting them only when we got there my father didn’t see t fit that I greet the aunty so I greeted her husband – there was no way my father could hide me from him because he was sitting in the living room when we arrived – and went to hang out with the kids not thinking much of it until I woke up this morning knowing deep down inside that I shouldn’t let anything I’m going through bother me because I would one day meet presidents and make a HUGE difference in the world. Do you blame everybody for the state that your life is in not knowing that you are the master of your own destiny?

Day 299

Whoever said every cloud has a silver lining was telling the God’s honest truth – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 7: 43 PM on day 299 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck –read My Kid Will Never Go To College  on Kveller, That was Then, This is Now on Chaing Rainbows and Special needs things that make you go “ARRRGH!”  on Love That Max – reading all three of these blog posts has made me fall in love with blogging all over again because although all three of these people are parents to kids who have “special needs” they all have different perspectives –   feed myself rice and curry for lunch, prepare my Kid of the Week feature for tomorrow, listen to music, tweet about my campaign some more – still no luck 🙁 – feed myself avocado on whole-grain bread for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts my grandmother has what appears to be Dementia – my family has taken her to a doctor and he says it’s just part of the aging process – and although I am deeply saddened that her mental health has taken a turn for the worse there is a tiny part of me – I can’t believe I’m actually typing this I feel SO guilty – that is happy that I am no longer the “sick one” in this family before I felt SO claustrophobic because my mother was with me 24/7 – apart from when she was sleeping or at work – now she’s too busy tailing my grandma to care what I’m doing. Do you see the silver lining in your dark cloud?

Day 296

You teach people how to treat you. – Dr. Phil C. McGraw

It’s 10: 23 PM on day 296 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  feed myself toast, mutton sausage and fried tomatoes for breakfast, watch TV, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, do some research on Dementia – it breaks my heart to see my granny becoming less and less of herself and unfortunately it seems that all I can do is sit back and watch because the treatment options for Dementia are very limited 🙁 – read two of the most recent post on Love That Max and Top 9 why you should blog on The Nicky Blog  – all the blog posts I read were very good but since I’d never read Nicky’s blog before naturally I was more excited to read that and the fact that I could attest to the 9 reasons why you should blog made it all the better 🙂 – tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – yesterday evening Tana (@woveneye3) made a PayPal donation which I will donate to my campaign on her behalf ASAP and Bonnie (@bonnie67) made two more donations – you guys are AWESOME thank you SO much for your support 🙂 – play host to my extended family who came over for dinner – my aunt almost ended up in tears when my father said grandma didn’t remember the names of her girl children because they didn’t take of her my father didn’t mean anything by it but I saw my aunt’s face when he said that and she was REALLY hurt 🙁 – and brush my teeth once more.

Last night after we came back from dinner at my uncle’s a community member of ours – let’s call him M – called and said he would be coming to our house in ten minutes to borrow our GPS and immediately my dad said with urgency to no one in particular M is coming take Nisha to the other room and in that moment instead of feel less than and going to my room like I usually did I said rather nonchalantly what’s wrong if I’m here to which he responded oh no nothing I just thought you wanted to pee which I did not believe for a second but for the sake of keeping the peace I let it go and asked my mother to help me in the bathroom. Have you taught people to treat you badly?

Day 294

The only way to change perception is through education – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 9: 19 PM on day 294 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, watch TV, feed myself sweet potatoes and salad for breakfast, read Max goes to camp, and misses some major excitement on Love That Max and A Trip We Won’t Soon Forget on Chasing Rainbows  – the first blog post was about learning to let go of your children while the second one was a heart-warming post about a family on vacation – feed myself sweet potatoes and salad for lunch, submit one of my posts to be on Love That Max – I wanted to give the world a few pointers on how to treat disabled people – watch some more TV,  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself rice and curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I came across a tweet by Nicholas Kristof (@NickKristof) which read How should journalists cover Africa? When we cover genocides & poverty, are we part of the problem? http://nyti.ms/m9DKog and I couldn’t help but feel offended because although there is poverty and violence on this continent that is just part of what Africa is about a perfect example of this is what happened in our housekeeper’s neighborhood last week an HIV positive woman had fallen ill and died a day later in hospital which would have left her three-year-old daughter without adult supervision had a kind neighbor not taken her in until her next of kin could be notified. Do you share the world’s perception of Africa because you don’t know any different?

Day 290

You should mourn the life you will never have – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 9: 08 PM on day 290 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast tweet about my Clean Water For All CampaignBonnie (@Bonnie67) made another donation – thanks Bonnie 🙂 – tweet about my campaign some more – no further luck 🙁 – watch TV, feed myself custard for lunch, read 10 Reasons My Son’s Cerebral Palsy Is Awesome – a guest post on Love That Max written by Shasta over at Outrageous Fortune – it was a refreshing blog post in that she took everything bad about her son’s Cerebral Palsy and made it good 🙂 – feed myself rice and curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

This morning my mother asked my father if my sister didn’t need to apply for her license and that just drove me to tears not because I was jealous of my sister getting her license but because I was sad that I would never get mine and since I didn’t want my sister to feel guilty for being able-bodied when she woke up and asked me why I was crying I blamed it on PMS and held back the rest of my tears until I was alone in the bathroom. Is the life you could have had an elephant in the room or simply a dream that you’ve let go of?

Day 288

You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. – Dr. Phil C. McGraw

It’s 8: 35 PM on day 288 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck 🙁 – read Love That Max and Ryn’s Tale Book of Days: Livin to the point of tears – my goodness there are some FANTASTIC parents out there 🙂 –  watch TV while feeding myself an egg sandwich for brunch, watch some TV while exercising, publish My Book Self – a new page on this blog which will feature all the books that I can remember reading over the course of my twenty year life – feed myself rice and curry for dinnerand brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday evening while I was editing and adding new books to My Book Shelf I couldn’t help but notice that all but four of the books that I had ever read were romance novels and in that moment I had an epiphany I was looking for love in guys – both fictional and real – because I did not feel loved by father and to remedy that I told myself what I wished my father had told me you’re beautiful I am so proud of you. Are you in denial about what you need?

Day 283

Being a parent is about allowing your children to be who they truly are– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8: 58 PM on day 283 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, read Love That Max, Chasing Rainbow and Outrageous Fortune – the first two blogs I read I’ve read a few times while I had never even heard of the third although I have to admit it was really heart-warming to read about this woman’s appreciation of her husband before I read that post I really thought that marriage was just another form of imprisonment but after reading that I’m beginning to change my mind 🙂 – watch TV, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck but I am hopeful because someone promised to make a donation later today 🙂 – feed myself grilled fish, potatoes and salad for dinner, and brush my teeth once more.

Today after my brother left for school in tears my mother came into my room and said I should stop asking him what J’s – his friend’s – marks are maybe that’s why he’s sad and in that moment I was SO angry that I said you love your children for what they can do and not who they are to which she responded if that was true I wouldn’t love you which suffice to say hurt my feelings. Do you love your children for who they truly are or for what they can do to bolster your image in society’s eyes?

Day 272

Books were my pass to personal freedom. I learned to read at age three, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi. – Oprah Winfrey

It’s 8: 07 PM on day 272 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, publish my Kid of the Week feature, feed myself scrambled eggs and ketchup for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck 🙁 – go to my ten-year-old niece’s birthday party – it was as fun as I expected it to be but you know what being part of a family means you show up for each other 🙂 – watch TV, feed myself a chicken nugget sandwich for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

As you know I have recently become obsessed with reading other people’s blogs and since I believe that things are better when you share them I would like to take things opportunity to share with you my favorite blogs. Take a look:

Day 269

We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
— Oscar Wilde (Lady Windermere’s Fan)

It’s 7:47  PM on day 269 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a polony sandwich for breakfast watch TV, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck but I will NEVER EVER give up because I know that the world can be better than it is :)– watch some more TV, feed myself a bread and jam sandwich for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Last night before I went to bed I visited Love that Max and read Please, stop staring—my son is not a freak. He is just a kid, even if he has some challenges your child doesn’t. He may not notice you are staring, but I do, and it makes me uncomfortable and, at times, sad. Someday, my son may very well notice the stares, and the last thing I want is for him to feel like an outsider in this world. He already has enough adversity to overcome. Treat him as you would any kid: say hello, joke with him, ask what his favorite color or food is. Do anything but stare. Please, don’t stare. – an excerpt from a blog post called What moms of kids with special needs want other moms to know – and since I was too sleepy to leave a comment after reading it I would like to take this opportunity to say to Ellen – Max’s mom – and all the other moms out there who have kids with special needs having special needs myself I have experienced the nasty stares and the whisperings behind my back and I won’t lie it used to bother me in the past but now every time I catch people staring at me I think to myself they should stare I am so pretty. Have you taught your children that they can look up at the stars even when in the gutter?

Day 256

Life looks a lot different from someone else’s point of view – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 46 PM on day 256 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck – feed myself a polony sandwich for breakfast, exercise for a few hours, rest for a few hours – the power was out – watch TV, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, rest some more – I had a headache 🙁 – and brush my teeth once more.

As you know my mother and I have our ups and downs but today as I read Those Special Needs Mothers proud moments by Ellen (see excerpt below) – an American mother who has a son with Cerebral Palsy – I saw life through her eyes and I began to cry because although I often told my mother she was being too overbearing I never once told her that she had done enough so from this moment on I will hear my mother’s words with love and react accordingly. Are you in constant conflict with those you love because you can’t put yourself their shoes for a little while?

For most of life, I’m too busy doing things—or too immersed in worries—to give myself props for mommy-ing Max. Actually, the same is true for mommy-ing Sabrina, who comes with her her own challenges (most of which involve a stubborn streak the size of Texas). But Max gives me a certain kind of parenting insecurity. Plenty of times, I’m just not convinced I’m doing the right thing or helping him as much as I can (and I suspect I am not alone here in feeling this way about my child). I swear, I’d like my tombstone to read “She did enough.”
