Day 2461: 6 Things You Need To Know Before Entering the World of Difference-Making

Making a difference is simpler than you think but more difficult than you might imagine– that’s what I know

It’s 12 : 35 PM on day 2461 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, have breakfast,  read  John 15: 3 and learn a new word – Definitions for hireling 1.
a person who works only for pay, especially in a menial or boring job, with little or no concern for the value of the work. 2. serving for pay only .3. venal; mercenary.

This morning I was thinking about what I wish I’d known before I fell into philanthropy and I wrote a few things down hoping it would help someone. Take a look:

6 Things You Need To Know Before Entering the World of Difference-Making

  1. Communication is key – people don’t care what you want to do or how you want to do it they care why you want to do it so before you start any project know why you’re doing it so you can communicate that well to others.
  2. You won’t always get to do things the way you envisioned (and that’s okay as long as you get it done) – sometimes you will plan something out in your head and for whatever reason things won’t unfold as you planned and when that happens you have to be flexible, think on your feet and get things done regardless (an imperfect, well-intended action is worth more than a thousand good ideas not executed).
  3. It’s not personal move on – sometimes you’ll pitch your idea to people and they’ll either want nothing to do with it or ignore you completely which will hurt the first few times but you have to keep moving knowing every no is a step closer to a yes .
  4. You will have detractors and naysayers – when you attempt the audacious some will say you can’t and others will say you shouldn’t ignore them and listen to the voice inside you that knows you can and remember why you’re doing it.
  5. You can’t do it by yourself – invite people to help you achieve your goal encourage them, believe in them and make them believe in their own potential to become change-makers….in short, build a team of leaders who are capable of articulating your vision to their circles of influence.
  6. Appreciation is EVERYTHING – nobody in the world is obligated to help you so when they choose to you should fall all over yourself trying to express your gratitude in as many ways as humanly possible.

Day 2457: Chronicles of An Aspiring South African Humanitarian

Do all the good you can as often as you can because it’s the right thing to do not because you think people will thank you – that’s my message to the world.

It’s 12 : 20 PM on day 2457 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, have breakfast,  read John 4: 16 and learn a new word – Definitions for brinkmanship
the technique or practice of maneuvering a dangerous situation to the limits of tolerance or safety in order to secure the greatest advantage, especially by creating diplomatic crises.

This year has been somewhat different from previous years in that I’ve be working much more in my own town suffice to say it has been both challenging and rewarding sometimes at the same time my family is ready to have me committed for dragging them to a place in town that everybody else is scared to enter I know that I’m putting myself and my parents at risk and yes sometimes the community I work in responds in ways even I don’t expect but my job is to help however I can how they receive that help and what they do with it after I leave is something that  I have relinquished control over (if I could walk I seriously probably would have been killed by now I have no fear at all I will go into any township in town and feel totally safe).

Day 2455: What I Value Above All Else

“There is no higher value in our society than integrity.” – Arlen Specter

It’s 10 : 54 AM on day 2455 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, have breakfast,  read 2 Corinthians 4:17 and learn a new word – Precipitous adj. Done rashly: acting too quickly and without sufficient thought. “Excessive spending caused the precipitous demise of the company.”

Yesterday I realized that my integrity is something I value almost above all else it’s really important to me that people know for a fact that I will do the right thing by them even if they will never know if I did or not.

Day 2454: Every Sunrise Is An Invitation

Even the most mundane days become magical when you realize every sunrise is an invitation to brighten someone’s day – that’s what I’ve realized.

It’s 10 : 13 AM on day 2454 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read John 12: 25   have breakfast,  and learn a new word – pestilential \ˌpe-stə-ˈlen(t)-shəl\ adjective: likely to spread and cause an epidemic disease.

This morning I was feeling just blah and directionless but that began to change when I thought to myself every sunrise is an invitation to brighten someone’s day so my mission today is to brighten someone’s day I don’t know how yet but I’m going to focus on what I have and make a plan.

Day 2450: My New Favourite Definition of Love

“Love is consistently showing up.” – Unknown

It’s 10 : 30 AM on day 2450 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray,   have breakfast, read 103: 17 and learn a new word – Definitions for keysmash
a random string of letters and symbols typed out on a keyboard or touchscreen, used to signal intense emotion in written communication: The photo of the actor was accompanied by a heartfelt keysmash.

Recently I read somewhere love is consistently showing up it’s my new favourite definition of love because it’s so true you don’t quit on people because you’re tired or because they’ve hurt your feelings you keep showing up for them either until they become the version of themselves that you know they are capable of being or until they violate one of your core values (the ONLY time it’s okay to quit on people and wish them the best is when they show no regard for the values you hold dear).

Day 2449: Jack Carroll at the Apollo

“You can’t study comedy; it’s within you. It’s a personality. My humour is an attitude.” – Don Rickles

It’s 10 : 14 AM on day 2449 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray,   have breakfast, read Colossians 3:20 and learn a new word – Definitions for winsome
sweetly or innocently charming; winning; engaging: a winsome smile.

Recently I watched “Jack Carroll Live at the Apollo” I found it absolutely hilarious and because I think everybody needs a laugh on Mondays I’m sharing it. Watch “Jack Carroll Live at the Apollo” below:

Day 2448: Before All Else Start With Jesus

We cannot be functional if we don’t first start at the feet of Jesus– that’s what I know.

It’s 11 : 39 AM on day 2448 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read Proverbs 22: 6, go to church, have breakfast and learn a new word – Extemporaneous adj. 1. Unrehearsed. Done or said without advance preparation or thought; impromptu. 2. Prepared in advance but delivered without notes or text: “An extemporaneous speech.”

Today we want to church and listened to a sermon entitled “Only One Thing Is Needed” it was about how in order to make a meaningful contribution to the world we must first start at the feet of Jesus I could relate because every morning before I start my day  I pray and then list out loud all the things I’m grateful for which takes  me about eight minutes to do but it’s totally worth it after that I feel centred and prepared for anything that the day has in store for me.

Day 2442: My Secret Heartbreak

The feelings you’re brave enough to feel will never devour you– that’s what I have realized.

It’s 11: 36 AM on day 2442 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read Romans 5: 5,   have breakfast and learn a new word – Definitions for ultracrepidarian 1.
noting or pertaining to a person who criticizes, judges, or gives advice outside the area of his or her expertise: The play provides a classic, simplistic portrayal of an ultracrepidarian mother-in-law. 2. an ultracrepidarian person.

Recently I found myself having to admit to myself that I feel the need to do all these crazy things (ziplining, paragliding, etc) because I probably will never do the one thing I would love to do which is become a mother someday I have always pictured a happy life with an imperfect life partner and a bunch of little ones which is medically possible for me (I think) but even if I was able to find a special person who could see past my body and into my soul I want the best for any kids I may have I want to run after them and tumble in the grass, I want to throw them up in the air and know that my reflexes will be quick enough to catch them…I want for any kids I may have a better mother than I know I can ever be so although it breaks my heart even if things worked out in such a way that I could have kids I’m 75% sure I would choose not to.

Day 2438: Right Where I’m Supposed To Be

I am right where I’m supposed to be at this stage in my life (even though sometimes it doesn’t feel like it) – that’s what I know.

It’s 12 : 09  PM on day 2438 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray,   have breakfast, read Acts 1: 8  and learn a new word – Definitions for slacktivism
actions taken to bring about political or social change but requiring only minimal commitment, effort, or risk: students engaging in slacktivism by signing an online petition.

This morning I realized that I am right where I’m supposed to be at this stage in my life because every experience is preparing me for the greater plan that God has had for my life even before I was conceived.

Day 2437: Intentionally and With Love

“It’s never crowded along the extra mile.” – Wayne Dyer

It’s 11 : 51  AM on day 2437 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray,   have breakfast, read Luke 24:49  and learn a new word – Definitions for zugzwang
Chess. a situation in which a player is limited to moves that cost pieces or have a damaging positional effect.

Today I realized that there’s nothing better than doing things intentionally and with love it really touches the heart because very few people in the world go the extra mile these days.
