Day 1320: Do you know what you want?

To get what you want you must first know what you want – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12  : 45 PM on day 1320 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Psalm 11,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, make sandwiches for our sisi’s (housekeeper’s) neighborhood with sisi’s help as part of  Virginia’s Sandwich Run (thank you sisi for all your help), practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – still on $602.85 hopefully I will get a little closer to goal by the end of today.

Two days ago I was thinking about my life goals and I realized all I want out of life is to be independent and to go to bed every night knowing that I tried my best to make a difference in the world. Do you know what you want?

Day 1266: Stay Focused

If you want to reach your goals you have to stay focused– that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s 12  : 05 PM on day 1266 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, pray,   read Esther 10, publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my Kid of the Week feature,   feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – nobody donated so far today either but if I stop caring there will be one less person who does so I’m going to continue trying to make a difference.

Last night I found myself regretting the fact that I spent almost the whole day watching the South Africa versus Australia test match when I could have been reading or doing something else more constructive I realized if I wanted to reach my goals I had to stay focused. Do you waste all your time then wonder why you never reach your goals?

Day 997: Breaking up big goals into smaller goals

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s  4  : 09 PM on day 997 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  read Deuteronomy 14,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,  tweet, Facebook and email about my campaign – my dad made a $30 donation today (thank you daddy)    – take off my dirty jacket and t-shirt and put on a clean t-shirt, stretch my hamstrings,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  feed myself All Bran Flakes and a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast,  pitch my story to the Huffington Post – any sort of media attention makes me acutely uncomfortable but when you’re doing something of a philanthropic nature it is essential to get as many eyes on your project as possible so i’m asking bloggers to write blog posts about my campaign and making myself available for print interviews (if you’re a blogger and would like to write a blog post about my campaign email me) – spend time outside   and  practice typing with both hands.

Today I realized yet again that everything in life is a process someone doesn’t just decide ok I’m going to run a ninety-six kilometre marathon tomorrow they first run five kilometres, then ten kilometres and eventually they are able to run the ninety-six kilometre marathon in the same way I think all of us should break our big goals up into smaller goals.  Do you set huge goals and expect to achieve them within days?

Day 321

The only way to know if you’re on the right track is to check your inventory once in a while – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 54 PM on day 321 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to feed myself an oranges for breakfast, prepare and publish my Kid of the Week feature, brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself avocado and oranges for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

This morning I was in the bathroom doing what people usually do in the bathroom and suddenly it occurred to me that I wasn’t making progress with regards to becoming more independent so I decided to grade my own report card. Take a look:

Reflections of the past 321 days: Self-assessment

  • To push myself around on my wheelchair – needs more practise most of the time I’m too lazy so I ask my family to wheel me around
  • To get in and out of bed by myself – not yet attempted because my parents are always around and even if they weren’t I would be too afraid to try because I fall and break my bones
  • To go to the bathroom by myself– again not yet attempted because my parents are always around and even if they weren’t I would be too afraid to try because I fall and break my bones
  • To bathe myself – attempted/needs more practice – I tried two days ago when my mother was in the hospital with my brother but since I can’t bend my back because there’s a metal rod in it – I had Scoliosis – that proved to be difficult
  • To undress and redress myself – attempted/needs more practice – sometimes I can only get one hand out a sleeve other times it’s both and on a really good I can take my whole shirt off
  • To brush my teeth – partially achieved – I can brush my teeth just fine but I need someone to help me lean over the sick so that the toothpaste ends up in the sink and not all over my shirt
  • To sign my name on a document (I never write anything out I always use a computer/laptop) – achieved sort of/needs more practice – I signed for my debit card and it was accepted bt when I signed to renew my passport it was denied
  • To type with both hands – needs more practice – I have been typing with only my left hand so long that it’s hard to break
  • To eat and drink by myself – partially achieved/needs more practice – I can feed myself with a spoon and drink from a mug but feeding myself with a fork and knife and drinking from a glass (because it has no handle) is still difficult
