Day 1288: Have you realized that you can’t help everyone?

As much as you want to you can’t help everyone–that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12  : 30  PM on day 1288 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,   brush my teeth, read Job 22,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,   promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – no donations so far today but Anonymous  donated £20 yesterday (THANK YOU God and THANK YOU Anonymous) which brings my total raised to $474.47 only $525.53 more to raise in 112 days  – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

Yesterday I got an email from an environmental organisation asking me to help them with their latest project I felt so bad that I had to send them a good-luck-but-I-can’t-help-you email because I knew what it was like to be on the other side of the situation but now I realize as much as I want to I can’t help everyone I am going to pick a few organisations to support and I’m going to support them wholeheartedly hopefully that will make me feel less bad about not being able to help everyone. Have you realized that you can’t help everyone?

Day 1199: Favorite giving stories in honour of Christmas

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” – Norman Vincent Peale

It’s 1  : 30 PM on day 1199 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,  read The Birth of Jesus,    feed myself boiled egg and bran flakes for breakfast and have a Christmas braai (barbecue) with my family – it was great fun.

Today being Christmas I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite giving stories of the year. Take a look:

Merry Christmas everyone!

Day 1197: Call me Santa thanks to a few friends

With God and a few friends anything is possible – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12  : 12 PM on day 1197 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,  read 2 Chronicles 1, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself eggs with bread for breakfast and hang out with my family.

A few days ago I got it into my head that  I wanted to give Christmas presents to the kids in our housekeeper’s neighbourhood so I emailed my friends, Wayne and Sandra, and with their generous donations I was able to buy presents for the kids just goes to show with God and a few friends anything is possible. Thank you Wayne and Sandra because of your generosity approximately sixteen kids have received the gifts you see below:

Day 1152: Give Back Films

Giving is to the soul what food is to the stomach – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12 : 03 PM on day 1152 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  watch the news, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings, feed myself Bran Flakes for breakfast,  read 2 Kings 10,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, spend time outside,   change my top and hang out with my sister.

Yesterday I came across Give Back Films – a YouTube channel that consists of videos of Kyle Oreffice doing good deeds – I just love knowing that there are people out there doing good just because they can. Watch Giving $100 to Homeless People, one of my favourite videos by Give Back Films, below:

Day 1076: Take care of yourself

You have to take care of yourself first before you can take care of anybody else – that’s what I keep learning

It’s 2  : 42 PM on day 1076 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  feed myself boiled egg and Bran Flakes  for breakfast,    publish my Disability of the Day feature, go visit my granny in hospital – she’s doing so much better eating well and siting by herself I’m so happy 🙂 – and tweet and Facebook about my campaign –  no one donated today but Anonymous  donated $50 yesterday (thanks again Anonymous) now I only need to raise $110  in the next 52 days to reach goal :)

Last night I realized if I wanted to make a difference for the rest of my life I had to take care of myself so I shut down the laptop and got a good night’s sleep usually I stay up late promoting my campaign and doing other stuff from today onwards I’m going sleep well, eat well and exercise when I can because if I’m not the best of myself I can’t give the best of myself to the world. Do you put everybody else first and yourself last?

Day 1064: Why some give and others don’t?

Those who believe they have much are more likely to give than those who believe they have little – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1064 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, read Ruth 2,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself boiled egg and Bran Flakes  for breakfast and   tweet and Facebook about my campaign – no luck so far but I’ll keep trying I only need to raise $230 more to reach my goal 🙂

This morning thinking about the difference between those who give and those who don’t I realized those who believe they have much are more likely to give than those who believe they have little it even makes common sense if you believe you have little you will hold onto everything you have for dear life on the other hand if you believe you have much you will think to yourself I have so much why shouldn’t someone else have as much or more than me. Do you believe you have much or do you believe you have little?

Day 913

It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding.
― Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

It’s 3 : 19 PM on day 913 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, stretch my hamstrings, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, brush my teeth, pray, read Exodus 33, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  practice typing with both hands,,  feed myself an avocado sandwich for breakfast, listen to music, spend some time outside – the weather outside is gorgeous I thought it would be a shame to waste it sitting inside – and watch TV.

A few days ago I read Kevin and Christine Williams Give Away £22,500 Raised For Sick Daughter To Little Boy With Cerebral Palsy – an article about Kevin and Christine Williams who gave away the money they raised for their daughter’s treatment to a boy with Cerebral Palsy after they found out further treatment wasn’t an option for their daughter – the fact that Kevin and Christine Williams could say in the midst of everything they were going through maybe we can’t help our daughter but we can help someone else’s son learn how to walk blows me away and inspires me to stretch myself when I give I will never forget the generosity of Kevin and Christine Williams. If you had something that someone else needed would you give it without them having to ask?

Day 832

It’s the thought that counts– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s  7 : 24 PM on day 832 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to stretch my hamstrings, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, brush my teeth, feed myself an egg  sandwich for breakfast, go shopping and watch The Life of Pi – the movie starts of with a boy named Pi being shipwrecked with his father’s tiger as the story unfolds Pi grows in his faith and learns about friendship I loved the story although the fact that it as in 3D was a bit annoying –      publish my Disability of the Day feature and  publish my Kid of the Week feature.

Today I woke up thinking I want to do something nice (for others) so I asked my dad to take me to the mall where I used my own money to buy gifts for the kids in our housekeeper’s neighbourhood I had my heart set on getting all nineteen kids one teddy bear each but when I got to the store I realized one teddy bear costs R30 and although I could afford to buy nineteen teddy bears I knew that I would never hear the end of it from my dad if I spent close to six-hundred bucks on toys  (my dad doesn’t really get me and my charitable ways he believes that if you have a hundred bucks you should only give ten I can’t do that if I have ninety bucks and you need ninety bucks I will give it to you I don’t care if it’s more than 10% of what I earn)  so I decided against the teddy bears and bought balls (rugby balls, tennis balls and a soccer ball)  and a deck of cards instead I felt awful I wanted every child to have one toy of their own but now I realize that it is the thought that counts and besides everyone can play with a ball not just one person as opposed to a teddy bear which you can’t really share. Do you look at the price of a gift or the thought behind it?

I LOVE hearing from you feel free to leave a comment below.

Day 557

Extraordinary things can happen when ‘ordinary people’ came together with a common purpose – that’s what I was reminded of today 🙂

It’s 5 : 57  PM on day 557 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature,  work,  tweet about my 21 For 21 Campaign,  drink tea by myself,  feed myself a vegetable burger for breakfast, tweet some more about my campaign –  Chrissy (@ChrissyPappas) made a donation yesterday (thanks again Chrissy I really appreciate it)  (21 x 7 = 147 x 4 = 588 cups of food for the hungry = a very happy almost twenty-one-year-old) –  feed myself rice and curry  for lunch and brush my teeth once more.

A couple of days ago my brother came from school raving about this video he watched in school called Kony 2012 and upon his recommendation I watched the whole documentary today what surprised me the most was that Jason Russell – the co-founder of Invisible Children Inc and creator of the Kony 2012 video –and I actually had a lot in common we both believe that ‘ordinary people’ who come together with a common purpose can achieve extraordinary things only he is working to save children in Uganda from Joseph Kony – one of the world’s worst war criminals – and I’m working – through various campaigns – to make sure that children all over the world have food, water and everything else they need. Take a look at the video below and you’ll see what I mean about Jason and I having the same message for the world:

Day 555

Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ~ George Santayana

It’s 5 : 24  PM on day 555 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  drink tea by myself,  feed myself a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast,   tweet about my 21 For 21 Campaign – no luck –  continue reading Catching Fire – the second book in The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins –    and tweet about my campaign – still no luck does nobody care that someone dies of hunger every 3.6 seconds I guess not 🙁

Today is Human Rights Day in South Africa – a commemoration of the 21 March 1960 Sharpeville massacre, when the police mowed down 69 unarmed people and injured 180 others who refused to carry the hated dompas identity document that was meant only for indigenous Africans – which I believe is the perfect opportunity for us to ask ourselves what we can do to make South Africa a better country as I know that even today not all South Africans have the same opportunities. Are you making mistakes in the present because you failed to learn from the mistakes of the past?
