Day 374

No one is above discrimination – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 35 PM on day 374 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a boiled egg and a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, practice writing with my hand, watch The Rugby World Cup match: South Africa vs. Namibia – we won 🙂 –  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck –prepare my Disability of the Day feature, compile a post for Youth Voices–a section of NorthFork Collective Voices headed by my friend, Mark McKinney –prepare my Kid of the Week feature for Sunday, feed myself spaghetti bolognaise for lunch,  continue reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, watch TV, feed myself oranges for dinner, brush my teeth once more and publish my Disability of the Day feature.

Yesterday while my father was talking to one of his old school friends online he said my eldest daughter is twenty and has a small problem… a small disability and I was mortified because I would never say to a friend of mine who I haven’t spoken to in years my father is forty something and has this, that and the other because I know that the medical conditions he has doesn’t make him who he is I just wish he had extended me the same courtesy but whatever. Would you discriminate against your children if they were different in some way?

Day 373

Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. – Martin Luther King, Jr.

It’s 7: 06 PM on day 373 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, practice writing by hand, practice typing with two hands, feed myself oats for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – Chrissy (@chrissy_bertolo) made a donation to my campaign via PayPal and as I told her I will make the donation on her behalf ASAP – thanks again Chrissy 🙂 – watch TV, tweet about my campaign some more–no further luck– feed myself spaghetti bolognaise for lunch, prepare my Disability of the Day feature – read the next paragraph for more information about this feature to be published as soon as this post is published –  continue reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, watch some more TV, feed myself yoghurt for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I was doing something – I forgot what it was – when the words Disability of the Day – the name of a forthcoming page ont his blog – popped into my head the idea behind Disability of the Day is to educate people about the different disabilities that people around the world are affected by every day why am I doing this you may ask well because upwards of FIVE-HUNDRED people read this blog EVERY MONTH and I feel it my responsibility to make the world a little less ignorant for the next generation of children whose differences will be more pronounced than those of the rest. Are you living dangerously?

Days 372

The way others feel about you is none of your business – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 07 PM on day 372 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, practice writing by hand, answer some question for my forthcoming profile on The Blogunteer–I used both hands to type the answers I am SO proud of myself 🙂 – feed myself a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck truth-be-told I am not trying that hard my first priority is becoming more independent which does not mean I no longer care about my campaign it just means I won’t chase after people for donations  – feed myself spaghetti bolognaise  for lunch – I used a fork and even less of a mess than yesterday I am SO proud of myself 🙂 – watch TV, continue reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, feed myself grilled chicken and tomatoes for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I overheard my parents taking about the NBT’s – national benchmark test, a test that all the universities in South Africa look at before they decide to accept you into the university or not – and what my sister was going to study after school it was only in that moment that I truly understood how much pressure was on my sister and the guilt of it overwhelmed me because I knew that my parents had basically written me off as someone with no future which meant that my sister and brother – both younger than me – had to work extra hard just so that my parents could have at least two kids to brag to their friends about but now I realize that I can’t control the level of expectations my parents have for their children and that although it hurts that they don’t expect me to be anything it doesn’t mean I won’t be. Is the way you feel about yourself dependent on how others feel about you?

Day 371

The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

It’s 7: 38 PM on day 371 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself oats for breakfast, practice picking up a glass and putting it back on the table for a few hours – I can now do that to my satisfaction 🙂 – practice writing by hand, watch TV, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself yoghurt for lunch, watch some TV, continue reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, continue watching TV, feed myself spaghetti bolognaise  for dinner – I used a fork and for the first time ever I didn’t make a huge mess I am SO happy and proud of myself 🙂 –  and brush my teeth once more.

Today as I was practicing picking up a glass and putting it down on the time I realized that I am joyful all the time because although I can only do little in the physical sense I celebrate every little thing I can do and even when there’s something I can’t do I practice it over and over and over again until I can and that is something I think is  missing in today’s world when people don’t achieve their dreams the first, second or even third time around they forget about what they’ve already achieved and just throw in the towel saying it wasn’t meant to be whereas I say I’ll try again tomorrow because I truly believe that you don’t work towards your dream for one year or even ten you work towards your dream until it becomes reality. Do you have the invariable mark of wisdom?

Day 370

I am the link between the people who don’t have water and the people who have resources to give it to them which means I have put myself in situations that I find extremely uncomfortable –that’s what I learned today.

It’s 8:  15 PM on day 370 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck –  feed myself salad for brunch, practice writing my hand,  go visit my grandma at my uncle’s house–I miss the person my grandma used to be she doesn’t even talk to anybody anymore 🙁 – brush my teeth once more and  feed myself McDonald’s chicken nuggets  for dinner.

Yesterday at Onam – our community’s annual event – I got a mention in the achievements section of the event – every year our community mentions the accolades of the youth in our community – in the category of social outreach and suddenly all eyes were on me I really HATED it because I didn’t start this campaign and tell my community about it to make myself look good I told them because I thought that if they knew what I was doing they would make donations I was wrong DEAD WRONG lots of people came up to me and said I am proud of you but NONE of the almost two-hundred people who were there opened their wallets and put their money where their months were which simultaneously pissed me off and made me more appreciative of people like Wayne, Stan, Laura, Bonnie, Galen, Rachel and Betsy who together have donated hundreds of dollars to my campaign in spite of the fact that they have never laid eyes on me. Would you be willing to put yourself in situations that you found extremely uncomfortable if it meant helping others?

Day 369

There’s opportunity in every struggle – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 11: 41 PM on day 369 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, publish my Kid of the Week feature – I forgot that today was Saturday and not Sunday LOL 🙂 – watch the Rugby World Cup match: South Africa vs. Fiji – we won 🙂 – feed myself toast and scrambled eggs for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck other than the two donations Bonnie (@bonnie67) made – thanks Bonnie 🙂 – go to Onam– (a celebration which originated in India which our community tries to replicate wherever they are in the world) it was a mixture of song, dance and food my family members have got some moves (I am not biased I swear)(see pictures of me at the event below) – and brush my teeth once more.

We are attending an annual event in our community calendar this afternoon and although I am usually a wallflower at these type of things today I have made a conscious decision that I will interact with people because I believe I have Cerebral Palsy so that I can show the general public that “disabled” people are just like everybody else. Are you able to spot opportunity in times of adversity?

Day 368

From a spiritual viewpoint you are always a creator. The tiniest situation in your life is not made “out there” but “in here,”, from the source of reality, which is awareness. – Deepak Chopra

It’s 7: 09 PM on day 368 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, practice writing by hand, practice typing with two hands, make sandwiches on behalf of Virginia’s Sandwich Run– I’m such an idiot I bought three loaves instead of four two weeks in a row – feed myself spaghetti bolognaise for lunch, watch TV and tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – Ramon Thomas, a motivational speaker from South Africa, made a donation  – thanks Ramon 🙂

As you know the realization that I can alter my reality simply by shifting my perception has been LIFE CHANGING for me you will always find me using my “negative” experiences to help others with that said today while I was having breakfast I thought about the fight I had with my father – my brother needed R30 for school and when I saw how reluctant my father was to give it to him I said in an irritated tone he’s your son to which he responded yelling you act like you’re the one who pays all his expenses – and how unlike in the past it didn’t affect me in the least which is when it occurred to me that there are thousands of kids out there right now who need to hear what I needed to hear growing up when my parents were fighting – sometimes using me as a weapon literally – and calling each other names so to those kids I say you are light, love and everything thing the world needs, you have the potential to change the world and regardless of what you think you did wrong it is NOT YOUR FAULT you don’t deserve what is happening to you whoever is hurting you had something wrong with them before you were born. Are you the creator of your life experience?

Day 367

The little things do matter – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 18 PM on day 367 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink Milo – chocolate milk – in a glass, practice writing by hand, feed myself a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast – it’s silly but I again used a fork and knife to eat the sandwich because I needed practice – practice writing by hand, practice typing with two hands, feed myself spaghetti bolognaise for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – I set up some automated tweets about water last night and just popped in to chat with people once in a while so that I could do what I needed to do and do good at the same time – watch TV and feed myself garlic bread for dinner.

Today our housekeeper and I – we hired someone new because the other one failed to pitch up for work for weeks – were talking about how everybody has something they cannot do and how being “disabled” doesn’t make you any less of a person and she said I sometimes watch you using the laptop and I wish I could learn and without even thinking about it I said I’ll teach you after you’re done with work because I figured what’s the use of having skills if you’re not willing to pass them on to others. Do you pay attention to the little things you can do to serve?

Day 366

Anger and hate against one we love steels our hearts, but contempt or pity leaves us silent and ashamed. – Edgar Rice Burroghs

It’s 7: 26 PM on day 366 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink Milo – chocolate milk – in a glass,  practice writing by hand, feed myself a peanut butter sandwich  for breakfast – it was funny I actually used a fork and knife to eat the sandwich because I was determined to learn how to use a fork and knife –  feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck –  watch TV, feed myself spaghetti bolognaise for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

This morning I asked my mother to get me Milo – chocolate milk – in a glass and she did as such but while I was drinking it she said it would have been easier for you to drink it from a mug and I responded so as to reassure her with something along the lines of I practiced doing this yesterday and she said with pity in her voice something I only usually hear from strangers pavaam – in translation from our native tongue of Malayalam it means poor thing – I don’t know what I expected but I know it wasn’t pavaam because pity is wasted on me why am I telling you this to remind you not to pity people because whatever our abilities we are all equal in our humanity. Are you silent and ashamed?

Day 365

How you overcome your challenges and not your challenges itself will define you– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 49 PM on day 365 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, learn how to drink from a glass– I usually drank from a mug because it had a handle I’m so proud of myself – practice some more writing by hand, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck other than the donation Chrissy (@chrissy_bertolo) from Canada   – can you believe it my campaign has truly gone my campaign has truly gone worldwide – thanks again Chrissy 🙂 – watch TV,  tweet about  some more–still no luck–   feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch some more  TV, feed myself oranges for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today as I was learning to do more new things by myself I came to the comforting realization that everybody has challenges only each of us have challenges that are unique to us – for me it’s not being as physically independent as I want to be – and that I guess is my message to you guys stop whining about hard your life is because there is no one on planet Earth who has an easy life. What defines you your challenges or how you overcome them?
