Day 518

You have to meet people where they are – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7 : 08  PM on day 518 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, pray, read Genesis 29 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,   feed myself a boiled egg for breakfast, drink tea by myself, work,      feed myself rice and curry for lunch, work some more and watch TV.

This morning my mom said to me as she has numerous times in the past imagine what you could do if you could walk but when she said it today I didn’t wish she was in a different place in her life I just accepted the fact that she was still mourning the loss of who I could have been and hoped she would get over it before I turned twenty-five. Do you always push people to where you want them to be?

Stan’s very sweet for saying so, but feel free to write what reflects you best.

Thanks to all my friends out there who are helping me make my dream come true: to make a better world for all of us!

Day 517

People are afraid of what they don’t understand and it is our job to make them more comfortable – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7 : 14 PM on day 517 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, go to church, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, prepare and publish my Kid of the Week feature,   pray, read Genesis 28 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,      feed myself cabbage and fish for breakfast,  drink tea by myself, work, feed myself rice and curry for lunch and watch TV.

You may recall a few Sundays ago I wrote about a woman at our church who asked my mother has she always been like this referring to me being disabled well today the very same woman introduced herself as Agnes and asked me what my name was before i knew it we became the best of friends because she saw my sense of humour and everything else about me as opposed to just my disability i guess starting the conversation is the hardest part when it comes to forming new relationships. Do you make a habit of reaching out to people who wouldn’t feel comfortable reaching out to you?

Day 516

A life without balance is no life at all – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 3 : 04  PM on day 516 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, pray, read Genesis 27 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible, work, drink tea by myself,  feed myself an egg  sandwich for breakfast,   work some more, feed myself rice and curry for lunch and watch TV.

Today my brother was using the laptop which meant I couldn’t do anything I usually did so I just did nothing – stared mindlessly into the TV – and to my surprise I was absolutely fine maybe life is not about working or make a difference all the time maybe it’s okay if I step back and stare at the ceiling from time to time. Do you live a balanced life?

Day 515

Be Content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you. ~ Lao Tzu

It’s 6 : 31  PM on day 515 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, pray, read Genesis 26 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible, work, drink tea by myself,  feed myself a mango pickle sandwich for breakfast,   work some more and go physiotherapy.

Yesterday I was watching an episode of Dr. Phil in which a ten-year-old girl said she wanted to have plastic surgery to look like Miley Cyrus and I was shocked because she was absolutely fine just the way she was I mean there’s nothing wrong with admiring celebrities but I think it is our responsibility to teach the children in our lives that being the best version of yourself is way better than being the copy of someone else. Do you wish you had someone else’s life because you see yourself as lacking in some way?

Day 514

Two heads are truly better than one so ask for input from others when you’re stumped – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8 : 02  PM on day 514 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, pray, read Genesis 25 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible, work,  feed myself a pepper-steak pie for breakfast,   work some more,     feed myself rice and curry for lunch,   finish working, watch TV, feed myself yoghurt and help my brother with his homework.

As you may or may not know my 21st birthday is coming up next month and although I am usually satisfied with the cutting of the cake and listening to my family sing Happy Birthday today I started thinking about ways that I could have fun on my birthday and do good at the same time only I could think of nothing so I’m asking you guys please make suggestions before 25 March 2012 in the comment section below if I pick your suggestion I will announce it on all my social media accounts and write a post about your favorite charity (Note: For your competition entry to be valid you have to leave a link to your favorite charity along with your suggestion). Are you secure enough within yourself to ask for and receive input from others?

Day 513

Know your dreams, fight for them, don’t expect everybody to support you and you will definitely achieve what you intend – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7 : 14  PM on day 513 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray, read Genesis 24 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,  drink tea by myself, feed myself oats for breakfast,   prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature,   work,   feed myself rice and curry for lunch,   work some more, feed myself yoghurt and brush my teeth once more.

This morning my mom was pushing me to eat and drink something and I said life is not about eating or drinking something life is about changing the lives of others to which my dad said sarcastically of course it is I was so irritated but a few minutes later as if God/the universe was telling me I had the right idea I logged onto my Hotmail account to find an email written to me by Mallory – an eleven-year-old who I chose to be last week’s Kid of the Week for her work with her organization, Project Yesu – which read:

I read your blog and I think you are really cool. And you are right everyone can make a difference, thats where my motto of “Be The Change” came from. I’m just one kid, 11 years old (almost 12) and I am making a difference in the lives of children in Uganda. I love how you encourage people to step up, if you can do it and I can do it then anyone can do it. 🙂

Tell me more about you. I am in the 6th grade and am in Middle School. I attend Grace Community Church and really I’m a regular kid who loves a country I have never been to YET! Tell me about South Africa. My 5th grade teacher, last year taught in South Africa and when she would tell the class about it, I LOVED her stories, She is part of the reason I fell in love with Africa.

My family wants to adopt, and we are in the process of adopting 2 boys from Uganda, and you know what? they are special needs 🙂 Zeke had cerebral malaria and Josh is developmentally delayed.

I am so glad that you contacted me on Twitter!

Day 512

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.[a]
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;
may the name of the LORD be praised.”

– Job 1: 20-21

It’s 7 : 30 PM on day 512 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,   pray, read Genesis 23 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible – I read Genesis 22 last night – prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature,  drink tea by myself, feed myself a mango pickle sandwich for breakfast, drink water – from a glass – by myself,   work, exercise,   feed myself rice and curry for dinner and work some more.

This morning I heard that South African athlete Oscar Pistorius received the Laureus World Sportsperson with a Disability Award (congratulations Oscar) at a gala function in London yesterday evening and I couldn’t help thinking how different the world would have been had he been able-bodied – he’s a double amputee sprint runner – the name Oscar Pistorius is synonymous with pushing the limit and being the best you can be just proves what I’ve believed for a long time God creates each one of us exactly as we are meant to be so that we can be the people we are destined to be. What has God taken away from you that has been a blessing?

Day 510

Every great thing that has ever been done has been done by groups of people and not individuals– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 5 : 49 PM on day 510 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,   pray, read Genesis 21 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible, go to church,  prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, prepare and publish my Kid of the Week feature,   feed myself Batura and chicken curry for brunch,  drink tea by myself and work.

A month from today my campaign will close and in honour of that I would like to thank EVERYBODY who donated to and/or promoted my campaign without you guys I wouldn’t have been able to raise $7 306 with one month to spare your generosity has forever changed me. Are you part of a group of people that is doing great things?

Day 509

Most of us have more than we need– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8 : 23 PM on day 509 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, work, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, work some more, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, drink tea by myself, continue working, feed myself nectarines for dinner – our neighbour came to visit and brought fruits she’s the most talkative person I’ve ever met but that’s okay I found it quite endearing 🙂 –  brush my teeth once more and  pray and read Genesis 20 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible.

Today I was helping my brother with his EMS – Economic Management Science – project – he had to create a collage separating needs from wants – and for the life of me I could only thing of seven things that we actually needed to survive oxygen, food, water, shelter, clothing, healthcare and education which leads me to the conclusion that most of us are living a life of excess I mean really who needs two of everything why can’t we give whatever we have leftover or don’t use to people who need it more than we do. Do you take what you need and give the rest away or hoard all your resources?

Day 508

Life always comes full circle – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6 : 52 PM on day 508 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,   pray, read Genesis 19 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature,   feed myself Oats for breakfast,    work,   feed myself yoghurt for dinner,  brush my teeth once more  – I had to do everything early because we have to go to a prayer at my uncle’s house – and work some more.

Yesterday I was in the bathroom and it suddenly occurred to me that we come into this world with nothing and we go out with nothing I found something about that very comforting. Have you ever had a fun circle moment in your life?
