Day 528

You don’t know what you have until it’s gone I think that saying also applies to people you don’t appreciate those you love until they are gone – that’s what I learned today 🙁

It’s 7: 17 PM on day 528 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, work, feed myself crackers for breakfast,   drink tea by myself,    work some more, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, continue working and watch TV.

As you probably know by now Whitney Houston died on 11 February 2012 which was (and is) sad for everybody who knew and loved her but what I found ironic was that more people where paying more attention to her now that she was dead than they were during the last few years of her life I guess sadly lack of appreciation is an affliction we all suffer from. Do you show your appreciation for the people that you love while you still have the chance?

Day 527

There comes a time in every life where you have to forget about what everybody else may think and do the right thing – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8 : 39 PM on day 527 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, work,    drink tea by myself,   feed myself a banana for breakfast, work some more, feed myself a carrot for lunch, continue working, feed myself rice and curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today I was debating with myself as to whether I should give up meat and meat products for lent raising money for the World Food Programme in the process I was on the fence about it because I didn’t want people to think I was sucking them dry considering my Clean Water For All Campaign wasn’t even over yet but now I realize that I wouldn’t be sucking anybody dry because nobody would be obligated to do anything they didn’t want to do (Note: If you want to donate click Donate, on the donation form you will be asked if you want to make the donation in honour/memoriam of someone click in honour of someone special and fill in my name and email address nishavarghese_1991@hotmail.com – where required so I can keep track of all the money raised). Do you not do the right thing because you’re afraid of what people may think?

Day 526

We are so much more than what we can do– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7 : 46 PM on day 526 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, work,    drink tea by myself,   feed myself a boiled egg for breakfast, work some more, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, continue working, feed myself Chapati and mutton curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today I needed help doing something – I forgot what it was – and quite unusually I wasn’t beating myself up saying what kind of twenty-year-old needs help doing this because I realized that I was allowed to ask for a little more help considering the challenges I faced which is not to say I have given up on being independent I have not I just know that if I don’t accept myself where I am I will never get to where I’m going. Do you define yourself by what you can do?

Day 525

The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. ~ Jane Goodall

It’s 7 : 32 PM on day 525 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, work, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature,   drink tea by myself,   feed myself a boiled egg for breakfast, work some more, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, continue working, feed myself Batura and mutton curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today – in between working – I was tweeting Indian celebs hoping that they would help me raise disability awareness in India by sharing my tweets with their audiences of course none of the celebs I tweeted responded to or even acknowledged my tweet but I will sleep well at night knowing that I at least tried to create change. Do you speak for people who can’t speak for themselves even when it seems like nobody’s listening?

Day 523

People can’t give you what they do not have– that’s what I learned today 🙁

It’s 5 : 08  PM on day 523 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, make entries in my Gratitude Journal and Diary respectively – I was too tired to do it yesterday – pray, read Genesis 34 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,   prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature,  drink tea by myself, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck  – raise disability awareness in India using Twitter – I went to India with my family last year and felt really stigmatized and I swore that I would do my best to educate people there- play with dough – it’s good exercise for my right hand which doesn’t work as well as my left – and continue raising disability awareness.

This morning my mom asked my dad and siblings if I could go with them to the gym the next time they went (my mom is of the opinion that I should get out more) everybody said no which I didn’t mind I mean really what was I going to do in a gym but my mom was pissed off in retrospect I realize that she had such a strong reaction because she expected my father to love me unconditionally regardless of my disability whereas I had no such expectation because I understood early on that asking my father to love me unconditionally was just like asking a bankrupt man to give me money and made my peace with it. Do you need from people what they cannot give you?

Day 522

Ignorance is bliss because people who don’t know what’s going on in the world have nothing to worry about – that’s what I learned today 🙁

It’s 6 : 57  PM on day 522 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink tea by myself feed myself oats for breakfast, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, pray, read Genesis 33 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,   work and watch TV.

Today I was thinking about rhino poaching and the other horrible things going on in this world and I felt so powerless but now I realize that all I can do is change what I can and hope that everybody else does the same. Are you living in bliss because you don’t know what the hell is going on in the world?

Day 521

A little reflection goes a long way – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7 : 48  PM on day 521 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, pray, read Genesis 32 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,  work – in between work I wrote an article about myself which might be published in one of South Africa’s magazines I will share with you guys what I wrote if it gets published – drink tea by myself, feed myself a boiled egg for brunch, work some more,   feed myself grilled mutton, potato salad and baked beans for dinner  and watch TV.

Yesterday I was laying in bed thinking about turning 21 and what it means for most people it’s a symbol of freedom and a time in one’s life where people almost expect you to do crazy things but I want turning 21 to be about me becoming more generous, kind and compassionate. Do you reflect on the important milestones of your life?

Today was an awful day all-round technical glitches, misunderstandings, you name it everything that could go wrong did go wrong suffice to say I was majorly stressed out but in those moments of ciaos I also had a moment of clarity in which I realized although I couldn’t control how people treated me I could control dealing with it in a mature manner. Do you do everything keeping in mind that every moment of your life is character defining?
