Day 671

You can use humor to change someone’s perspective if only for a little while – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 8 : 46 PM on day 671 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself   Chapati and chicken curry  for breakfast,   drink  grape juice by myself,  continue reading Mr. Bishop and the Actress by Janet Mullany,    publish my Disability of the Day feature,  publish my Kid of the Week feature,  work,  feed myself rice and curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

This morning my mother got deservedly irritated with me after hours of hearing me talk she said something along the lines of keep quiet to which I said cheerfully you should be grateful there are some parents who pray for their child to just say one word imagine if I couldn’t walk and talk with that both of us burst out laughing. Do you poke fun at yourself to make someone see something differently?

I LOVE hearing from you feel free to leave a comment below.

Day 666

Your problems are not as big as you think they are– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 7: 45 PM on day 666 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to   work, brush my teeth, feed myself  Puri and chicken curry   for brunch, work some more,  prepare and  publish my Disability of the Day feature,   watch TV, go visit family,  feed myself  butternut and chicken curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

A couple of days ago I came across a video of an X Factor audition which totally put my life into perspective. Watch this inspirational video below:

Day 639

We don’t need as much as we think we do– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 4 : 20 PM on day 639 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast, publish my Disability of the Day feature work, rest while my brother was using the laptop – he was home sick from school  – work some more and watch TV.

Last night laying in bed thinking about the majority of entries I make in my Gratitude Journal it occurred to me that I only value three things in life my health, my family and the opportunity I have every day to make a difference most people think they need TVs, laptops, Ipads and and and truth is, we don’t need any of these things if the laptop  that I use stopped working tomorrow I would be angry that I was so careless with it but I wouldn’t be distraught because I know that the things that I use are not an extension  of  me some people  don’t know where their cell phones are for a nanosecond and they totally freak out when I see that I just want to say calm down it’s just a cell phone you can get  another one.  Do you realize that we have more than we need?

Day 637

If you love what you do you will never run out of energy– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 4 : 08 PM on day 637 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, work, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, drink tea by myself,  work some more and feed myself butternut and chicken curry for lunch.

Today was my first day tweeting for @sabsa1South African Business Schools Association – and I have to say I had a lot of fun you may be thinking how can you have  fun staring at a computer screen all day well if I thought of it like that I would think my job was boring too but I don’t think of it that way I think of it as wow somebody out there is probably reading the tweets I’m posting and  maybe just maybe he/she is becoming a better human being because of it when you understand that people will be experiencing your work in some way it won’t matter if you’re a janitor or the CEO of Microsoft you will have fun doing what you do.  Do you love what you do?

I LOVE hearing from you feel free to leave a comment below.

Day 616

All anyone wants is to be understood – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 2 : 51 PM on day 616 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,  drink Green Tea  by myself,  feed myself All Bran Flakes  for breakfast,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  exercise my right hand –  I  cut  pieces of banana bread and a peanut butter sandwich using a knife with my right hand just a  few more practice sessions and I’ll be able to eat with a fork and knife I am SO PROUD of me :)

A couple of days ago I needed help to go to the bathroom so I asked our housekeeper and she helped without complaint as she was putting me back in my wheelchair she said stating a fact  you’re heavy (I am the normal weight for my age and approximate height but to people carrying me I must still feel heavy) to which I said guiltily sorry what she said next is something that I wish the world understood about “disabled” people she said don’t be I know you didn’t choose to be this way.   Do you make an effort to walk a mile in another person’s shoes?

Day 609

Being ignored is worse than being hated– that’s what I learned today:)

It’s 3 : 45 PM on day 609 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,   feed myself All Bran Flakes  for breakfast, drink Green Tea  by myself, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  exercise my right hand – still  need more practice picking up a knife with my right hand  – and feed myself an avocado sandwich for lunch.

Today I awoke to read a comment in response to Day 568  Nisha, I am both physically and mentally disabled but I do NOT want to be lumped into the “I am disabled” category that you are trying to create.  Trying to make everyone see themselves as “disabled” in some way or another is a pathetic attempt at you trying to make the world conform to you, rather than making the effort to blend seamlessly with it.   Instead of trying to drag everyone else down to your level, you need to step up your game and strive to live a full life as possible.  Part of the beauty of today’s world is that everyone can be different and still be accepted, but do not use your disability to guilt people into lowering their own standards to make you feel better. I read quite  few of your entries and the predominant posts are “I fed myself. I watched tv.”  Step up your game girl!  Instead of watching tv, attempt to learn to knit or crochet.  It is wonderful therapy for hand dexterity.  Take up flower gardening. Take up walking the neighbors dog for a bit of spending cash.  Do SOMETHING besides watching tv and trying to make everyone see themselves as disabled so that you feel better. What Wayne is telling you above is that your posts are depressing.   Nobody in their right mind wants to promote depressing, monotonous drivel like “I fed myself and watched tv because I’m disabled and you are too” suffice to say I was slightly shell-shocked but replied Hi, I think you misunderstand the intention of this blog post I am trying to get rid of some of the stigma around being “disabled”. I am sorry that you feel what I write is monotonous drivel I write about all the little things I do because a couple of years ago I couldn’t do them every day I try to learn how to do something new by myself. I want people to read my blog and know that it’s not too late for them to change and become the people they want to be :)Yours truly, Nisha PS. I beg you to read about who I am http://nishav360.com/2010/08/who-i-am/ before you judge me although I suppose it’s too late for that now. the way I look at it this person could’ve read the post and forgotten about it but they didn’t they took the time to tell me how pathetic my  efforts were as a writer there is no greater compliment I could receive.   Would you prefer to be hated or ignored?

Day 590

Let go of the things people didn’t do and focus on what they did do– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 3: 15 PM on day 590 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,    publish my Disability of the Day feature and exercise my right hand – I can now pick up and put down a coffee mug with my right hand (double yay!) I need more practice  though  should have it down by tomorrow :)

Today something happened which made me realize that the attitude of ingratitude is a part of the human condition think about it somebody will do a hundred nice things for us do we stop to say thank you I don’t think so instead we will be mad about the one thing that person didn’t do it’s really sad and I, for one, am going to express my gratitude more often I make entries in my Gratitude Journal of 2012 every day but seldom thank anyone to their face –  I thank my mother for dinner and thank the housekeeper for taking me to the bathroom that’s about it.  Do you choose to focus on what wasn’t done for you instead of what was?

Day 391

Always keep your eyes on the bigger picture– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 35 PM on day 391 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed  to watch The Rugby World Cup match: South Africa vs. Australia – we lost and are out of the world cup but congratulations to both teams who give it a 100% sometimes all the matters is that you try your best which the Spingboks did I am SO PROUD of the team 🙂 – brush my teeth, feed myself  pancakes with coconut and sugar for breakfast,  publish my Kid of the Week  feature, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – listen to music– I LOVE Undo It and Sometimes You Leave  by Carrie Underwood (see both  lyric videos below)–  feed myself chicken biryani for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more–still no luck– watch TV and feed myself a McDonald’s junior chicken burger  for dinner.

This morning my brother and I were watching South Africa vs. Australia – the Rugby World Cup quarter-final match – and at the end of it all my brother said outraged how could they lose by two points and although I too was bitterly disappointed I always saw the game for what it was a game and that I guess is my message to you guys don’t blow things out of proportion because no matter what you’re through at least you have three meals a day – I’m assuming – and everything you need unlike the people of Somalia who have to walk for kilometers risking life and limb just so that they can have something to eat. Do the littlest of things have the power to bring you down?

Day 337

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. – Albert Einstein

It’s 7: 45 PM on day 337 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an avocado sandwich for breakfast,  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – prepare my gratitude journal page  – (see why below) estimated time of publication right after I’m done with this – read How To Put “First Things First” – And Reclaim The Life You Love on My Lifestyle Max and A special kind of sibling torture on Love That Max – both very good blogs – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch TV,  feed myself oranges for dinner, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

As you know this month has been a wrenched one for my family – my brother was in hospital and is still recovering and my grandma is still in hospital – but what astounds me is that no matter what happens on a given day every night or the next day I make an entry in my gratitude journal – sometimes all I write is I am grateful that I am grateful – which is something I think everybody should start doing so in the hopes that you will follow in my footsteps and see your life in a different way I am going to create a page on this blog called Gratitude Journal of 2011, copy and paste all the entries I’ve made so far this year and continue to make new entries until the 31st of December. How do you choose to live your life?

Day 325

Those who make the world’s craziness work for them will end up on top – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 47 PM on day 325 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself fruits for breakfast, exercise for fifteen minutes, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself steamed potatoes for lunch, tweet some more about my campaign – still no luck 🙁 – watch TV, brush my teeth once more and feed myself steamed mixed vegetables for dinner.

As you know I do not understand celebrity obsession nor frankly do I care for it but after this tweet sent to me by Justina (@jval2009) RT @juliebenz: Wow!! Inspiring!! @AllCharisma: u both should check out @nisha360 she’s trying to do the same thing she is amazing I decided to embrace this celebrity obsessed culture that we live in and thought about how I could use it to make this world a better place which is when I came up with the idea of asking you guys to tweet your favourite celebrities about my campaign – use this tweet: @Nisha360 is a brave, smart young woman trying to make a better world for us all. Please help her do an amazing thing. http://bit.ly/hC7vOu or write whatever reflects you best – because let’s face it although all of us have the power to make a difference some of us can do it more easily than others. Have you ever used something you hated to your advantage?
