Day 440

There are some aspects of your personality you need to grow even if you think it will change you for the worse– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 06 PM on day 440 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee by myself,  prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, go to church,  go shopping – well everybody else went shopping I stayed in the car (my family took turns staying with me)  to be fair my dad did ask if I wanted to go but I could tell he wanted  me to say no so I did  it doesn’t matter anyway because I know this home-body stage of my life won’t last forever I will see the world and meet new people don’t ask me how I know I just do –prepare and publish my Kid of the Week  feature,  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – create a user for Holly-Scott Gardner–a high school student from York, UK who just happens to be blind (she and Jenelle Ramsami will be blogging for me on separate pages while I’m in India) –  feed myself rice and curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday my parents invited some people over for dinner and just before one of them–the guest of honor – left she said specifically to me I’ll pray for you in that moment I felt like making a snide comment because she made me feel like I was broken but I kept my mouth shut which I have decided to do never again to jolt people out of ignorance into acceptance and to show them that disabled people can be happy in spite of their disabilities (when people first see me I think they think I am miserable all the time which is so not true it’s not even funny of course it sucks that I can’t take care of myself the way I want to but even that doesn’t dampen my spirits for too long because I’m learning how to do things and know that it’s only a matter of time until I’m completely independent). Are you the kind of person who avoids being rude even when people are stepping all over you?

Stan’s very sweet for saying so, but feel free to write what reflects you best.

Thanks to all my friends out there who are helping me make my dream come true: to make a better world for all of us!

Day 439

Sometimes you’ve done enough just by being there – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 5: 34 PM on day 439 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a chicken nugget sandwich, drink juice by myself,   prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature,  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck –draw –my brother wanted to use the laptop I took that as an opporunity to draw which happens to be one of my favorite hobbies can’t say I’m any good at it though LOL 🙂 –  feed myself rice and curry for lunch, draw some more and tweet about my campaign some more – still no luck.

Today my grandma came to visit – she always comes on Saturday or Sunday – and while my brother and sister said a few words and went their separate ways I chose to stay because I truly believe that even though she can’t remember me she can feel that I love her. Do you make it a point to be there for people even if you can’t take away their suffering?

Day 438

We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not alone. – Orson Welles

It’s 7: 28 PM on day 438 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee  by myself, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck today but Mary made a donation of $25 last night   – thanks Mary :)–  feed myself chicken biryani for lunch, go to physiotherapy and tweet about my campaign some more–still no luck.

This morning laying in bed it occurred to me that I have nobody to talk to about the things I’m going through – my mom says that she understands what I am going through and how hard I have to try to do the simplest things but she doesn’t not really if she did she wouldn’t tell people that I do nothing when we go visiting, my dad he barely talks to me because he doesn’t see me as a human being, my sister and brother have their own lives and think I want them to feel guilty for the fact they can walk whenever I talk to them about the challenges I face and my extended family I don’t talk to them much about my trials and tribulations because they really would not know what to say – but then I realized that I would always have me and that I guess is my message to you guys be your own biggest fan because at the end of the day no matter how much you love your family members and friends and no matter how much your family members and friends love you, you are all you’ve got. Do you invest more in your relationships than you can afford to lose?

Day 437

You have to be the best version of yourself even on your worst day– that’s what I learned today 🙁

It’s 7: 09 PM on day 437 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – exercise, feed myself a chicken nugget sandwich for lunch, watch TV, and brush my teeth once more.

This morning while my mom was (excuse the graphic details in this post) wiping me I said it’s cold – I usually say that – and she just came at me it’s not enough that I’m wiping your blood now you’re complaining when I heard that I burst into tears because I was humiliated already not being able to take care of myself without her throwing all the things she did for me back in my face as if that wasn’t bad enough she told me – because she was angry that I told my father to take her with when he went to drop my sister off at school –that I’m the reason my dad treated (and still treats) her badly to which I kept saying with anger it’s not my fault, it’s not my fault, it’s not my fault but now I realize that what I should have done was say I forgive you sincerely and forget everything she said because that’s what Jesus would have done so when my mom comes back from work that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Are you able to be the best version of yourself even on your worst day?

Day 436

Some people are just mean – that’s what I learned  today 🙁

It’s 7: 05 PM on day 436 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself a chicken nugget sandwich for brunch, watch TV, feed myself Batura and chicken curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today I received a Direct Message from Jenelle Ramsami (@MissJenjo) – a model from Durban, South Africa who just happens to be hearing impaired – saying that someone had tweeted her and a friend telling them that she doesn’t deserve to win FHM 2012 just because she is hearing impaired which really bothered (and still bothers) me suffice to say I gave the sender of that tweet a piece of my mind why is it that when someone who has a disability achieves something great or receives an award people think it’s because of or in spite of his/her disability why can’t it be because they are good at what they do. Do you have to tear people down to lift yourself up?

Day 435

And it’s great to tell people about mercy and faith, but first you must also tell them about the law and judgment (Matthew 23:23).

It’s 7: 04 PM on day 435 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee by myself,  prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself Batura and chicken curry for brunch, watch TV, feed myself a chicken nugget sandwich for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday evening we were praying together as a family which was a fairly new thing in our house and while my father was reading the Bible I couldn’t help thinking hypocrite he reads the Bible but is ashamed of his own child – my mom has to fight tooth and nail to get him take me to parties and stuff and even when we do go he stands on the other end of the room and pretends we aren’t there – just because she is different when we were done praying I said to my father you don’t have to read the Bible for thirty minutes just learn to treat people properly looking back now I regret the judgment with which I said those words but in that moment I felt like he was mocking God. Do you call people out when they are doing something wrong or leave them alone because you’re afraid of sounding judgmental?

Day 433

They are no accidents in life everybody is born the way they are so that they change the world in their own way– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6: 04 PM on day 433 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee by myself, publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my Kid of the Week  feature,  go to church–the reverend talked about how the sheep and the goats would be separated on Judgment Day and how we would be asked what did you do with what God gave you I believe him – feed myself  Idli –   a south Indian savory cake popular throughout India – and Sambar – a dish common in South India and Sri Lankan Tamil cuisines, made of toor dal – for breakfast, watch TV, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch some more TV and tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck.

A couple of days ago I stumbled onto  the promo for Rollin’ with Zach – a travel show hosted by Zach Anner (a twenty-seven-year-old who has Cerebral Palsy) – and I wanted to know more about him so I searched him up on Youtube which is when I saw his interview with Oprah – he had to interview people as part of Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star. Take a look his confidence will amaze you and inspire all the kids out there who have special needs:

Day 432

Every choice you make is a vote for something – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7: 49 PM on day 432 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – watch Breaking Dawn Part 1 at the Hemingways Mall–I LOVED it, it won’t win an Oscar or anything but you could feel the passion with which it was made as you watched it and at the end of the day that’s what I want when I go to watch a movie great job Kristen, Robert, Taylor and company 🙂 –visit some relatives and feed myself a burger and French fries for dinner.

Today the first thing I saw when I logged on to the web was Demi Moore to divorce Ashton Kutcher and I’m ashamed to say I clicked on the link and read the article but while I was reading I thought to myself what’s wrong with me I being entertained by someone else’s heartache so from today onwards I am no longer going to read articles about celebrities unless it’s about them doing something good and I ask that you do the same because magazines and newspapers only print what we read and if we stop reading they’ll stop printing and publishing these types of articles think about it you guys celebrities have kids and their kids will grow up knowing things about their parents’ personal lives that they shouldn’t know because we are putting our money into the tabloid industry. Do the things you vote for represent you?

Day 431

We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures. – Unknown

It’s 6: 45 PM on day 431 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  feed myself All-Bran Flakes with banana for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself rice and curry for lunch and tweet about my campaign some more– still no luck.

Today I was doing something – I forgot what – and it suddenly occurred to me how many people help me every week so from this week onwards every Friday – except for when I’m in India (8 December-2 January) during which time I will not be active on this blog (Jenelle Ramsami – a model who just happens to be hearing impaired – will be sharing her experiences on a ‘Guest Posts’ page that I will create) – I am going to list everyone who’s helped me – both in my real and online life – from one Friday to the next (if you’ve helped me in any way on any given week and I don’t to mention you please know that it is not intentional) . Take a look:

Day 430

You can’t blame someone for what they learned growing up – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 5: 43 PM on day 430 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee by myself, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself rice and curry for lunch and tweet some more about my campaign – still no luck.

Two days ago I read Arun Shourie on his tale of cerebral palsy and enduring love written by Amrit Dhillon – an article about a father’s unconditional love for his son and the struggles he and his family faced raising a child who has Cerebral Palsy in India (a special thanks to Andi over at Bringing the Sunshine for including a link to this article in Sun-Beams: November 13, 2011 where I found it) – and in the article Arun Shourie – the dad – talked about how parents of special needs children in India basically hid their children from the outside world and refused to talk about them when I read that I realized that my father being ashamed of me had nothing to do with me and everything to do with the country he grew up in suffice to say I feel a whole lot better about myself now than I did two days ago – all this time I thought my dad treated me horribly because of something I did when in reality he was just treating me the way people treated disabled people in India when he was growing up. Do you still believe what you learned growing up even though you know in your head that it’s complete nonsense?
