Day 1916: Men and Women

It’s true what they say men are from Mars and women are from Venus – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 4 :  18 PM on day 1826 of my journey towards independence and day 12 of our India trip 2015 went shopping at Parthas, had lunch at the Indian Coffee House and went to visit my godparents

Today my sister and I went to Parthas – a clothing store – with my dad, brother and cousin the guys bought their stuff and couldn’t wait to get out while us girls took our sweet time picking the clothes we wanted to buy it was interest to note the contrast.

Day 1913: Back from Cochin

Travel opens minds and changes perceptions– that’s what I’ve realized.

It’s 2 :  15 PM on day 1823 of my journey towards independence and day 9 of our India trip 2015 traveled 6 hours by bus from Cochin back to my uncle’s apartment, had lunch and hung out with family.

Today we traveled from Cochin back to my uncle’s apartment I really enjoyed our trip to Cochin but I’m really glad to be at my uncle’s till Sunday.

Day 1912: Arrived in Cochin

Every city has its own character – that’s what I’ve realized.

It’s 9 :  32 PM on day 1822 of my journey towards independence and day 8 of our India trip 2015  we hang out with family, went to Lulu Mall – shopped at Lulu Fashions, had a SubWay sandwich for lunch (I’m totally in love with SubWay whenever I find a store I eat from there their menus suite my health-nut ways), watched Spectra at PVR Cinemas – best movie theatre ever they had reclining seats), had Masala Dosa for Dosa Xpress for dinner.

Yesterday my family and I arrived in Cochin – one of the big cities in Kerala – the best way to describe the city is to say it’s the Johannesburg of Kerala it’s young, it’s alive….it’s where I would live if I ever moved to India people are so nice to differently-abled people here they literally made way when they saw me. Thank you Cochin for being so nice to me I love you.

Day 1910: With my godmother

We never grow up in the eyes of the people we love – that’s what my godmother reminded me.

It’s 12 : 38 PM on day 1820 of my journey towards independence and day 6 of our India trip 2015 had breakfast and spent time chatting with my aunt/godmother – very wise woman she is.

Yesterday we came to stay with my godparents for two days and just as my siblings and I were about to sleep my godmother comes in and says I’ll leave the light on good night children I love you I felt like I was six years old again it was the sweetest thing.

Day 1909: Changing perceptions about disabled people

To change the way people are treated we need to change the way we see them – that’s what I’ve realized.

It’s 10 : 26 AM on day 1819 of my journey towards independence and day 5 of our India trip 2015 spent time with family and had breakfast.

Yesterday we were out and about in Trivandrum and we noticed there was no wheelchair parking anywhere I asked dad why that was and he was frank about it he said because disabled people here stay inside which made me sad I think to change the way differently-abled people are treated we need to change perceptions.

Day 1908: Generalizations and Kerala

It’s not a good idea to generalize – that’s what being in India has taught me.

It’s 5: 06  PM on day 1818 of my journey towards independence and day 4 of our India trip 2015 spent time with family, had breakfast went clothes  shopping at Pothys –  and had lunch at Zam Zam –  one chicken biryani was more than enough for me and my sister (if you want to eat well on a budget India is the place for you).

Today we went to Pothys  and I was pleasantly surprised to see that unlike in my mom’s hometown (which we stayed in four years ago) people here (in the capital city of Kerala) hardly stared at me I was wrong in thinking that the majority of the people I would meet would be unkind to me.

Day 1907: Be grateful everywhere

Be grateful to be wherever you are – that’s my message to the world.

It’s 11: 49  AM on day 1817 of my journey towards independence and day 3 of our India trip 2015 spent time with family and had breakfast.

Today is day 3 of our trip to India at the beginning of the year I wanted different experiences and I got what I wished for I’m so grateful to be here to spend time with family.

Day 1906: Arrived in India

The journey is more important than the destination but it feels good to get to the destination– that’s what I’ve realized.

It’s 3 : 45  PM on day 1816 of my journey towards independence and day 2 of our India trip 2015 we arrived at our destination and spent time with family,

Today at 8: 45 AM (Indian time) three plane rides and a day later we arrived in Kerala. Thanks so much to South African Airways and Emirates Airlines who took great care of me and my family (I felt like a celeb me and my family hardly ever had to wait in line at any time during our journey [because I’m a “special passenger”] it was awesome).

Day 1859: “Meet South Africa”

“South Africa never leaves one indifferent. Its history, its population, its landscapes and cultures – all speak to the visitor, to the student, to the friend of Africa.” -Tariq Ramadan

It’s  12 :  45  PM on day 1859 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  read Acts 4, publish my Disability of the Day feature, learn one new thing –Mature jacaranda trees can reach heights of between 25 and 40 feet- have breakfast and just chill out – today is the first day in forever that I’m just going to relax I would love to go hang out with kids at an orphanage or something but alas I can’t drive and I don’t want to inconvenience my parents they only get a break on weekends I don’t want to cut into their free time.

A few days ago I watched South African Tourism’s new advert titled “Meet South Africa” and I loved it the ad truly conveys the fact that visiting South Africa is an unforgettable experience (which it is I should know I have the honour and privilege of living here).  Well done South African Tourism! Watch “Meet South Africa” below:

Day 1326: Traveling with Cerebral Palsy

Make the best of everything – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s  7  : 33 AM on day 1326 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, get changed – we  are going to Table Mountain and other places today we’ll blog about it with pictures in the next few days – and pray.

Yesterday we arrived at Cape Town only to realize that our oh so beautiful apartment which we knew was wheelchair inaccessible was even more wheelchair inaccessible than we originally thought (the living room, a kitchen and a bathroom is downstairs while everything else is upstairs) oh the joys of travelling with Cerebral Palsy I will make the best of it.Do you try to make the best of everything?
