“Aphasia etiquette: Ask, wait, listen.” – Laura Cobb
It’s 12 : 15 PM on day 1170 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth read 1 Chronicles 3, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself All Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings, change my t-shirt and hang out with my sister.
This morning I saw Young Stroke Survivors with Aphasia – Laura – a video in which Laura, a stroke survivor with Aphasia, gives people tips on how to talk to her – most of the tips Laura gives in her video are applicable regardless of what “disability” the person you’re talking to has I may be in a wheelchair but just like you my greatest need is acceptance and my greatest fear is rejection.
