Day 630

Every voice matters when fighting against cruelty – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 8 : 06 PM on day 630 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink  Green Tea by myself,  feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,    publish my Disability of the Day feature, work, exercise my right hand – I can now pick up a knife properly with my right hand need more practice though 🙂 – feed myself an avocado sandwich for lunch, watch TV,   feed myself bread, butternut and fish curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I stumbled onto Are You Happy Now – a music video by Megan and Liz telling the story of the “bully” and the person being builied (see the music video at the end of this post) – and ever since then I’ve wanted to say a couple of things to the parties involved in bullying so here goes:

To the “bully”:

  1. You’re NOT a bad kid
  2. Being the victim of bullying isn’t an excuse to go out and bully other kids (people stare at me and say rude things to my face because I’m in a wheelchair  but I don’t retaliate because I know how it feels to be on the receiving end of rudeness)
  3. You  can be a hero just stop bullying and start sticking up for kids  who are being bullied by other kids

To the person being bullied:

  1. Tell an adult that your being bullied (If you feel like you have  nobody to talk to email me at adventuresofme@hotmail.co.za and I will do whatever I can to help you)
  2. The fact that you’re being bullied has NOTHING to do with you the person bullying you is probably bullying you because he/she was bullied
  3. Ask a few of your peers to walk with you because bullies tend to target kids who are by themselves a lot

To the bystander:

  1. If you see one of your peers being bullied don’t walk away, step up and say stop that
  2. Offer to walk with a peer who you know is being bullied so  the “bully” will think twice about approaching him/her
