Day 1165: Extraordinary People – The Little Mermaid

“It’s just that some people have two legs and I don’t.” – Shiloh Pepin

It’s 12  : 12 PM on day 1165 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, feed myself  All Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast,  read  2 Kings 23,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, change my t-shirt, stretch my hamstrings and hang out with my sister.

Today I watched Extraordinary People – The Little Mermaid – a documentary about the late Shiloh Pepin, a little girl who died of Pneumonia at the age of ten after living her whole life with Sirenomelia, a condition that causes two legs to fuse together – this documentary proves to everybody that no matter how different we may appear to be all of us are more alike than we are different Shiloh’s legs may have been fused together but if people looked passed that they would see a fun little girl. Watch Extraordinary People – The Little Mermaid below:

Day 1163: JR: My wish: Use art to turn the world inside out

We are all created different so that we can change the world in different ways– that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12  : 10 PM on day 1163 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  read  2 Kings 21,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty jacket and t-shirt and put on a clean t-shirt,  hang out with my sister and read Proud Mean Girl Moms Make Fun of Our Kids.

This morning I stumbled across JR: My wish: Use art to turn the world inside out – a Ted Talk by an artist  named JR that reminded me that we are all created different so that we can change the world in different ways. Watch how JR used (and continues to use art) to change the world below:

Day 1162: Money + Fame = Greatness?

Money and fame does not equate to greatness – that’s what I wish the world would understand.

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1162 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray,  read  2 Kings 19 and 2 Kings 20,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  stretch my hamstrings,    practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  feed myself  boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast and hang out with my sister

Today I was thinking about this celebrity obsessed culture we live in there are people out there  who are famous just for being famous while people doing extraordinary things with their lives hardly get any attention at all I have nothing against celebrities but if you’re famous at least be famous for doing something.  Do you equate money and fame to greatness?

Day 1161: When life gives you lemons choose to make lemonade

You can’t choose what happens but you can choose how you react to it – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 4  : 12 PM on day 1161 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray, start reading Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking  by Malcolm Gladwell,  feed myself  boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast, read some more, feed myself stir fry for lunch, continue reading, publish my Disability of the Day feature and publish my Kid of the Week feature.

This morning shortly after we woke up there was a city-wide power outage which we later found out would last for ten hours it sucked but I chose to look at it as an opportunity to catch up on my reading you can’t choose what happens but you can choose how you react to it. Do you choose to make the best of every situation?

Day 1160: Keep quiet

When you encounter a person who you know is always looking for a fight it’s best to keep quiet– that’s what I learned today.

It’s 12  : 09 PM on day 1160 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray, read 2 Kings 18,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, edit My Book Shelf and add new books and  feed myself  boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast.

This morning I learned that when you encounter a person who you know is always looking for a fight it’s best to keep quiet I often tell people what I think and offer suggestions with the best of intentions unfortunately there are some people in the world who will pick a fight with you no matter what you say so from today onwards when I’m around such people I’ll keep quiet.  Do you find yourself engaging with people who are always looking for a fight?

Day 1159: Relax things will happen when they are supposed to happen

Relax things will happen when they are supposed to happen– that’s what I learned today.

It’s 12  : 10 PM on day 1159 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,  stretch my hamstrings,  read  2 Kings 17, publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast, listen to music – I saw Angel Tairua Australia’s Got Talent audition a few days ago her version of Diamonds is FANTASTIC I keep listening to it- and hang out with my sister.

Today something happened or rather didn’t happen that made me realize I should relax things will happen when they are supposed to happen I have a routine and when something happens and things don’t go according to plan I get anxious but from today onwards I’m going relax and let things happen when they happen life’s too short to sweat the small stuff.  Do you totally freak out when things don’t go according to plan?

Day 1158: If you died today would you be proud of the life you’ve lived?

If you can honestly say if I died today I would be proud of the life I’ve lived then you’re not doing too badly – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 9  : 10 AM on day 1158 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray, feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, read  2 Kings 16,  publish my Disability of the Day feature and stretch my hamstrings.

This morning I realized if God forbid I died today I would be proud of the life I’ve lived which makes me really happy because I know that not many people in the world can say that. If you died today would you be proud of the life you’ve lived?

Day 1157: Differently-abled people easily exploited?

Differently-abled people are not as easily exploited as people think – that’s my message to the world.

It’s 3  : 02 PM on day 1157 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  read  2 Kings 15,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  stretch my hamstrings,       practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself boiled egg and  All Bran Flakes for breakfast, hang out with my sister and have lunch.

Yesterday I read Does this child seem exploited to you? – a blog post about a mom who is being accused of exploitation because she let her child who happens to have Cerebral Palsy appear in a print ad – it infuriates me that every time a differently-abled person is put front and centre it’s called exploitation I’ve had similar experiences people give me unsolicited advice about all sorts of things so that I won’t get exploited sometimes I feel like saying I am a normal twenty-two year-old the fact that I can’t walk has no bearing on my intelligence.

Day 1156: 17 Foods I Want toTry Before I Die

“I am not a glutton – I am an explorer of food” ― Erma Bombeck

Day 1155: Rights, Responsibilities and Democracy

With rights come responsibilities – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12 : 03 PM on day 1155 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  read 2 Kings 13,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,  stretch my hamstrings, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles  feed myself Bran Flakes and boiled eggs for breakfast and hang out with my sister.

This morning I was having a democracy versus single-party state debate with someone I know that my vote alone can’t remove a party from power and that political parties are notorious for making promises they can’t keep but I have been given the right to vote and it is my responsibility to do so my physiotherapist said it best when she said you don’t vote for one party over another you vote to break the power of the party that’s already in power.
