Day 1175: I don’t have any control over my life?

You and only you control how your life is going to turn out – that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1175 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, read 1 Chronicles 8,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my Kid of the Week feature,   feed myself  boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast, pray and work on my book called Life: My thoughts on everything from faith to beauty – the book consists of some of the blog posts I wrote before I started writing about my journey towards independent I’m compiling this book to pass on some of the lessons I’ve learned in life hopefully people who read it will learn things that will spare them the pain and confusion I felt a few years ago.

Yesterday I realized you and only you control how your life is going to turn out and in that moment I decided that I was going to succeed in life –be independent in every way – because honest to God you get treated like crap when you’re constantly dependent on other people. Do you find yourself blaming others for the way your life is turning out?

Day 1174: Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading. –William Styron

It’s 12  : 23 PM on day 1174 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, finish reading  Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking  by Malcolm Gladwell,   read 1 Chronicles 7, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast and hang out with my sister.

This morning I finished reading  Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell at the beginning of the book Malcolm Gladwell says that contrary to popular belief you don’t need a lot of time or information to judge a person or a situation correctly and by the end of the book you can’t help but believe him I love this book it’s fascinating to know that even when you think you’re not thinking you are actually thinking.

Day 1173: 1 Good Deed

“Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.”― Mahatma Gandhi

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1173 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, pray,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  read 1 Chronicles 6, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  All Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast, stretch my hamstrings, change my clothes and hang out with my sister.

Yesterday I started 1 Good Deed, I asked my Facebook and Twitter friends to do one good deed anytime between 28 November 2013 and 25 December 2013 and now I’m asking the same of you. All you have to do is  do one good deed for a stranger, animals or the environment anytime between now and Christmas day and tell me or show me what you did (you can take pictures or videos of whatever you did and tweet (@nisha360) or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/adventuresofme / https://www.facebook.com/nisha.varghese) them to me if you don’t have a camera or video camera you can simply tweet or Facebook me telling me what you did) (Note: Please use #1gooddeed when you tweet or Facebook about 1 Good Deed).

Day 1172: Listen

Sometimes people don’t need you to fix things for them they just need you to listen – that’s my message to the world.

It’s 12  : 07 PM on day 1172 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth,   read 1 Chronicles 5, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  All Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  stretch my hamstrings and hang out with my sister.

Today was one of those days I wished I could make people see life through my eyes sometimes I tell people I’m in pain or that I’m uncomfortable and some of them respond by saying what can I do about it I wish they understood that I don’t need them to do anything except listen. Do you listen to other people talking about their problems even if you can’t fix things for them?

Day 1171: The Most Important Question You Can Ask Yourself Today by Mark Manson

“Everybody wants to have an amazing job and financial independence — but not everyone is willing to suffer through 60-hour work weeks, long commutes, obnoxious paperwork, to navigate arbitrary corporate hierarchies and the blasé confines of an infinite cubicle hell. People want to be rich without the risk, with the delayed gratification necessary to accumulate wealth.” – Mark Manson

It’s 12  : 45 PM on day 1171 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  read 1 Chronicles 4, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  All Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast, stretch my hamstrings and hang out with my sister.

Today I read The Most Important Question You Can Ask Yourself Today by Mark Manson – an article that asks what pain are you willing to suffer to get what you want in life – I agree with what Mark said in the article everything you want in life has a price I wanted to make a difference in the world so I had to spend days, weeks and months in front of my laptop promoting various campaigns if all you do is sit around saying I want this or that your dreams will always remain dreams to make your dreams come true you have to put in the hard yards.  Are you willing to work hard to get what you want?

Day 1170:Young Stroke Survivors with Aphasia – Laura

“Aphasia etiquette: Ask, wait, listen.” – Laura Cobb

It’s 12  : 15 PM on day 1170 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth  read 1 Chronicles 3, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  All Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings, change my t-shirt  and hang out with my sister.

This morning I saw Young Stroke Survivors with Aphasia – Laura – a video in which Laura, a stroke survivor with Aphasia, gives people tips on how to talk to her – most of the tips Laura gives in her video are applicable regardless of what “disability” the person you’re talking to has I may be in a wheelchair but just like you my greatest need is acceptance and my greatest fear is rejection. Watch Young Stroke Survivors with Aphasia – Laura below:

Day 1169: Poverty exists because there isn’t enough money?

If all of us who have much used our considerable resources to empower those who have little poverty would be a thing of the past – that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s 1  : 00 PM on day 1169 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth  read 1 Chronicles 2,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself  All Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast,  listen to music, continue reading Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking  by Malcolm Gladwell and hang out with my sister.

Yesterday I was watching one of those stupid wedding dress shows to keep my sister company and I was shocked to find out some people spend upwards of $10 000 (R100 000+) on a wedding dress if all of us who have much used our considerable resources to empower those who have little poverty would be a thing of the past it makes me sad that some people spend $10 000 on a wedding dress while others go to bed hungry.

Day 1168: Forgive quickly

Life’s too short to hold grudges forgive quickly – that’s my message to the world.

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1168 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,   feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast, read 1 Chronicles 1,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my Kid of the Week feature, go to church and continue reading Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking  by Malcolm Gladwell.

This morning I was thinking about people who hold grudges whenever I see someone holding a grudge I can’t help thinking what are you so angry about you have your health, you have opportunities and you have a family they’re not perfect but they love you life’s too short to hold grudges I try to forgive quickly. Do you forgive quickly or wait for people to come grovelling?

Day 1167: Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution

If you believe you can then you will if you believe you can’t then you won’t  – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12  : 42 PM on day 1167 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  read  2 Kings 25,  publish my Disability of the Day feature and continue reading Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking  by Malcolm Gladwell.

Two days ago I started watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution – a show documenting Jamie Oliver’s mission to get Americans eating healthier –  I was so moved by how much Jamie cared about people he didn’t even know and how much he believed in his vision despite facing opposition from all quarters.  Watch Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution episode 1 below:

Day 1166: Help people with grace

Help people with grace – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 12  : 22 PM on day 1166 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to   brush my teeth, pray, feed myself  All Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast, go to the Orthotist to  have my new wheelchair’s belt adjusted – people see a wheelchair that a person is sitting on and assume that that particular wheelchair was made to fit that particular person in reality you order a wheelchair, it arrives and then it’s tailored to suit your needs and preferences being wheelchair-bound is a such hassle sometimes, like today,  I would give anything to have problems that other twenty-two-year-olds have –       read  2 Kings 24,  publish my Disability of the Day feature and practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles.

This morning something happened that made me realize when helping people it’s important to do so with grace just because  somebody needs your help it doesn’t give you license to treat them like dirt. When you help people do you do you do so with grace?
