Day 1196: Hackschooling makes me happy: Logan LaPlante

“Education is important, but why is being happy and healthy not considered education, I just don’t get it. So I’ve been studying the science of being happy and healthy. It really comes down to practicing these eight things. Exercise, diet and nutrition, time in nature, contribution, service to others, relationships, recreation, relaxation and stress management, and religious or spiritual involvement, yes, got that one.

So these eight things come from Dr. Roger Walsh, he calls them Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes or TLCs for short. He is a scientist that studies how to be happy and healthy. In researching this talk, I got a chance to ask him a few questions like; do you think that our schools today are making these eight TLCs a priority? His response was no surprise, it was essentially no. But he did say that many people do try to get this kind of education outside of the traditional arena, through reading and practices such as meditation or yoga.

But what I thought was his best response was that, much of education is oriented for better or worse towards making a living rather than making a life.”

–  Logan LaPlante, Hackschooling makes me happy: Logan LaPlante at TEDxUniversityofNevada

It’s 1  : 55 PM on day 1196 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Chronicles 29,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself boiled egg and bran flakes for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature, go to church and go to the mall.

Yesterday afternoon I watched Hackschooling makes me happy: Logan LaPlante at TEDxUniversityofNevada – a Ted Talk by a 13-year-old that makes a strong case for non-traditional schools – I totally agree with what Logan said in his talk teaching kids to be healthy and happy should be an important part of every curriculum right now most schools are focused on teaching kids how to make a living but what they should be focused on is teaching kids how to make a life. Day 1195: Kids connected to technology and disconnected from people

Kids are losing their ability to interact socially– that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s 12  : 29 PM on day 1195 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, pray, read 1 Chronicles 28, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself  boiled egg and bran flakes for breakfast and listen to music.

Yesterday my brother’s friend came over for a sleep over I thought they would spend every minute together playing so imagine my surprise when I heard that one was watching something on the laptop while the other was playing Xbox 360 it scares me to think that kids today define spending time together as being in the same room at the same time. Are the kids in your life connected to technology and disconnected from people?

Day 1194: Do you sometimes feel like your life is a punishment?

Life is a gift not a punishment – that’s what I try to remind myself.

It’s 1  : 44 PM on day 1194 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Chronicles 27, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself  chickpea curry wraps for breakfast, spend time outside made sandwiches as part of Virginia’s Sandwich Run  and listen to music.

This morning I felt like life with Cerebral Palsy was a punishment but then I thought of people who are going through worse nothing seems so bad when you look through the lens of gratitude.  Do you sometimes feel like your life is a punishment?

Day 1193: Enjoying the in between

Life is not about crossing things off your to-do list it’s about all the moments in between – that’s what I realized today 🙂

It’s 12  : 47 PM on day 1193 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Chronicles 26, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself  boiled egg and bran flakes for breakfast, spend time outside and hang out with my family.

This morning I realized life is not about crossing things off your to-do list it’s about all the moments in between I wake up every day with a list of things to do and I get everything done but as a result of being so goal oriented I’m seldom in the moment I want to change that. Are you too busy crossing things off your to-do list to enjoy your life?

Day 1192: The Science of Happiness – Operation Kindness

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention.” ― Kahlil Gibran, The Essential Kahlil Gibran

It’s 12  : 32 PM on day 1192 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Chronicles 25, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself  tomato, onion, capsicum and feta scrambled egg with bread for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and hang out with my family.

This morning I watched The Science of Happiness – Operation Kindness – an experiment that aims to prove that being kind makes people happier –after watching this I’m even more determined to be kind. Watch The Science of Happiness – Operation Kindness below:

Day 1191: Simon Sinek: How great leaders inspire action

“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” – Simon Sinek, How great leaders inspire action

It’s 1  : 06 PM on day 1191 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Chronicles 24, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself  tomato, onion and feta scrambled egg with bread for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and hang out with my family.

A couple of months ago I watched Simon Sinek: How great leaders inspire action – a Ted Talk that explains why some people are successful and others aren’t – in this talk Simon says people don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it I can tell you from personal experience that what he says is true when I tell people what I’m doing I get a lukewarm reaction but when I tell people why I’m doing it everybody is keen to help. Watch Simon Sinek: How great leaders inspire action below:

Day 1190: Why I hate being referred to as “special needs”

Everybody has “special needs”– that’s my message to the world.

It’s 12  : 04 PM on day 1190 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  feed myself a boiled egg and bran flakes  for breakfast, read 1 Chronicles 23,    publish my Disability of the Day feature, listen to music and hang out with my family.

Last night I was thinking about the term special needs I wish people would understand that there is no such thing as a “special needs” person all of us, differently-abled or not, have special needs.Do you use labels such as special needs to sideline certain groups of people?

Day 1189: Goodbye Nelson Mandela

“Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.” ~ Nelson Mandela

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1189 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Chronicles 22,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  publish my Kid of the Week feature,    feed myself boiled egg and oats for breakfast and  hang out with my family.

As you may or may not know today is Nelson Mandela’s funeral I’ve been sad that he’s no longer with us ever since I heard that he died but now I realize although he has stopped breathing he lives in each of us whose lives he touched. Rest in peace Madiba I will never forget you.

Day 1188: Visibly different people deal with the same challenges as others?

People who are visibly different have to deal with things that others don’t – that’s what I’m trying to deal with.

It’s 4 : 08 PM on day 1188 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray, feed myself  boiled egg for breakfast, read 1 Chronicles 21,  publish my Disability of the Day feature and go to the mall with my family.

Today I was at the mall with my family and this woman sort of stepped in front of me and opened and closed her hand in front of my face and then later a woman from our church kissed my hand and told me she remembered my beautiful smile usually people coming up to talk to me doesn’t bother me but today I just wanted to be a “normal” twenty-two-year-old at the mall with my family I’m trying to deal with the fact that people who are visibly different have to deal with things that others don’t.

Day 1187: Be humble in all your ways

Be humble in all your ways– that’s what my message to the world.

It’s 12  : 35 PM on day 1187 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray,  brush my teeth,  read 1 Chronicles 20,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself chicken wraps for breakfast,   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  hang out with my family and go to physiotherapy.

This morning somebody was complaining that they weren’t mentioned in something they were a part of I wish more people would realize life is not about people knowing how much you have or how much you did it’s about making a positive contribution to the world. Do you feel the need to take the credit for everything or are you happy to do all the work and let others take the credit?
