Day 1204: Taking the good with the bad

You can’t have the good without the bad – that’s what I realized today.

It’s  1 : 15 PM on day 1204 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself egg curry with bread for breakfast,   read 2 Chronicles 7, pray, publish my Disability of the Day feature  and hang out with my family.

This morning I woke up feeling the distinct lack of independence that comes with having Cerebral Palsy in that moment I realized I couldn’t have all the good things that come with having Cerebral Palsy without having to deal with the bad. Do you want the good without the bad?

Day 1203:Do you want to be right at all costs?

It’s more important to keep the peace than it is to be right – that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s  2 : 34 PM on day 1203 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself egg curry with bread for breakfast,   pray,  read 2 Chronicles 6, publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my Kid of the Week feature    and hang out with my family.

Yesterday something happened which made me realize it’s more important to keep the peace than it is to be right. Do you want to be right at all costs?

Day 1202: Give people a break

Give people a break – that’s what I keep telling myself.

It’s  12 : 20 PM on day 1202 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray,  read 2 Chronicles 5, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself egg curry with bread for breakfast and hang out with my family.

Yesterday we – my sister, my cousin, my niece and I – went to the hair salon and while we were waiting for them to finish straightening my niece’s hair the woman who cut my hair started telling us about an intellectually disabled man that she knows and how I was nothing like him I will never understand why when people see me they feel the need to tell me about the differently-abled people that they know I suppose when you don’t know what to say you refer back to your experiences. Are you too harsh on people?

Day 1201:What Would You Do With $25 000? Casey Neistat’s answer

There are more good people out there than bad – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s  3 : 00 PM on day 1201 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray,  read 2 Chronicles 4, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself puri and chickpea curry for breakfast and hang out with my family.

Yesterday I watched What Would You Do With $25 000 – a video about what director Casey Neistat did with the movie trailer budget 20th Century Fox gave him – I was really touched that Casey Neistat used $25 000 to go to the Philippines and help people instead of making a movie trailer just goes to show there are more good people out there than bad. Watch What Would You Do With $25 000 below:

Day 1200: Not caring if people notice you

When you know that you’re doing your best to be a good human being you don’t really care who notices – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 2  : 17 PM on day 1200 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray,  read 2 Chronicles 3, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself bread and chicken curry for breakfast and hang out with my family.

Three days ago somebody pointed out that someone else wasn’t paying attention to me to which I said I do everything I can to be a good human being if people don’t notice it’s not my problem when you know that you’re doing your best to be a good human being you don’t really care who notices. Do you do everything you do to look good in the eyes of other people?

Day 1199: Favorite giving stories in honour of Christmas

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” – Norman Vincent Peale

It’s 1  : 30 PM on day 1199 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,  read The Birth of Jesus,    feed myself boiled egg and bran flakes for breakfast and have a Christmas braai (barbecue) with my family – it was great fun.

Today being Christmas I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite giving stories of the year. Take a look:

Merry Christmas everyone!

Day 1198: Lessons from the Mental Hospital: Glennon Doyle Melton

“The world doesn’t need more “strong” superheroes hiding the truth of who they really are beneath capes of perfection, shame, cruelty, snark, addiction, or apathy. We need more plain old “weak” people who are brave enough to come out of hiding. We need more messy, honest, fully human beings who will volunteer to tell the truth about who they are – who will live shamelessly out in the scary, messy world.

It’s braver to be Clark Kent than it is to be Superman.”

– Glennon Doyle Melton, Lessons from the Mental Hospital: Glennon Doyle Melton at TEDxTraverseCity

It’s 3  : 00 PM on day 1198 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,  read 2 Chronicles 2, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself egg wraps for breakfast and hang out with my family.

Yesterday watching Lessons from the Mental Hospital: Glennon Doyle Melton at TEDxTraverseCity – a Ted Talk about being honest with yourself and other people – I realized that I, like many people, am fake I often tell people I’m fine when I’m not because I don’t want to burden them with my problems I want to stop doing that and be real because me being real will give others permission to do the same. Watch Lessons from the Mental Hospital: Glennon Doyle Melton at TEDxTraverseCity below:

Day 1197: Call me Santa thanks to a few friends

With God and a few friends anything is possible – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12  : 12 PM on day 1197 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,  read 2 Chronicles 1, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    feed myself eggs with bread for breakfast and hang out with my family.

A few days ago I got it into my head that  I wanted to give Christmas presents to the kids in our housekeeper’s neighbourhood so I emailed my friends, Wayne and Sandra, and with their generous donations I was able to buy presents for the kids just goes to show with God and a few friends anything is possible. Thank you Wayne and Sandra because of your generosity approximately sixteen kids have received the gifts you see below:
