Day 1217: The Blessing of Ritual

There is a comfort in rituals, and rituals provide a framework for stability when you are trying to find answers. – Deborah Norville

It’s 12  : 45 PM on day 1217 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,  pray, read 2 Chronicles 20,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  publish my Kid of the Week feature,    feed myself egg with bread for breakfast, go to church and listen to music – currently listening to Hunter Hayes I just love his music it’s so heartfelt and beautiful.

This morning in a sermon entitled “The Blessing of Ritual” our reverend said religious rituals root us, connect us and sustains us in our spiritual lives I can attest to that every morning I pray, read the Bible and make an entry in my gratitude journal doing these things centres me and gives me peace in a way that I can’t fully explain.  Do religious rituals make you feel connected to a higher power?

Day 1216: Competing against thyself

Life is not a competition between yourself and others life is a competition between yourself and older versions of yourself   – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s  1: 13 PM on day 1216 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, hang with family, pray, feed myself a chicken wrap for breakfast, go drop my sister at the airport – she’s gone back to university after summer break it’s going to take a while to get used to not having her around again but it is what it is I have to find ways to go out and do stuff without her maybe this year I’ll ask our housekeeper to come with me when I need to go somewhere (I can’t go anywhere without someone being there with me)-     read 2 Chronicles 19 and publish my Disability of the Day feature.

This morning I realized life is not a competition between yourself and others life is a competition between yourself and older versions of yourself other people might be doctors, lawyers, rich or famous but as long as you’re the best version of yourself you’ve got nothing to worry about.  Are you the only one that you’re competing against?

Day 1215: Mountain or molehill?

The mind makes mountains out of molehills – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s  2: 15 PM on day 1215 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  read 2 Chronicles 18, publish my Disability of the Day feature, go for a scan and go visit people.

Today I went for a scan and it showed the same thing that my blood test did that there is nothing wrong with me except for the fact that I’m underweight suffice to say I am a little embarrassed but grateful that there’s nothing wrong with me.

Day 1214: Stop looking every which way and start looking up

When you feel like everything going to hell in a handbasket stop looking every which way and start looking up – that’s what I realized today.

It’s  12: 09 PM on day 1214 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  read 2 Chronicles 17, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself eggs with bread for breakfast and hang out with my family.

This morning I felt like everything was going wrong in that moment I realized I should stop looking every which way and start looking up.  In times of trouble do you look every which way but up?

Day 1213: Do you worry about things you can’t control?

There’s no use worrying about things you can’t control – that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s  2: 05 PM on day 1213 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,    read 2 Chronicles 16, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast and hang out with my family.

Yesterday thinking about the blood tests I took earlier in the day I realized there’s no use worrying about things you can’t control whatever will be will be and because God is with me I know I can handle it .Do you worry about things you can’t control?

Day 1212: Choosing not to break

Nothing can break you unless you let it – that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s  12: 22 PM on day 1212 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,    read 2 Chronicles 15, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself boiled egg with bread for breakfast go to the doctor and go to the pathology lab to get some tests done – if you believe in a higher power please pray that my hormone levels and everything else comes back okay otherwise I will be on medication for life (please God don’t let that be) whatever happens I will be okay because I know everything works together for the glory of God.

Yesterday something happened that made me realize nothing can break you unless you let it you can life in chaos and dysfunction and choose not to be affected by it. Have you gone through things that have made you realize you’re stronger than you thought?

Day 1211: 365 Grateful

“The secret to happiness…be satisfied and be grateful.” ― Mitch Albom, Have a Little Faith: a True Story

It’s  3: 00 PM on day 1211 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,    read 2 Chronicles 14, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself boiled egg wraps for breakfast, do crosswords, do research about HIV/AIDS and hang out with my family.

Yesterday I came across 365 Grateful –  a gratitude journal in the form of pictures created by Hailey Bartholomew that has inspired thousands of people to be more grateful in their own lives – I could totally relate to what Hailey said about gratitude changing her life being grateful doesn’t solve all your problems what it does is shift your focus from all the things you don’t have to all the things you do have. Hear the story of how 365 Grateful began below:

Day 1210: How being differently-abled is like being a celebrity

You’re never as alone as you think you are there are thousands maybe millions of people going through the same things you’re going through – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12  : 39 PM on day 1210 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,  pray, read 2 Chronicles 13,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  publish my Kid of the Week feature,    feed myself boiled boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast, email the Elton John AIDS Foundation – before I decide if I want to raise money for a particular organization I email them a bunch of questions if they answer those questions to my satisfaction then I move forward with my plans (people trust me with their money so I have to make sure that the money I raise gets to the people who really need it) – and hang out my family.

A few days ago I read “Why having a disability is like being an unintentional celebrity” I could so relate to this blog post there’s a certain responsibility that comes with all the attention you get when you’re differently-abled I can’t tell the people who come up to me at the mall to buzz off because I represent myself, my family and the differently-abled population.   Have you read or watched things that have made you realize you’re not alone in what you’re going through?

Day 1209: Maysoon Zayid: I got 99 problems… palsy is just one

“I got 99 problems… palsy is just one.” –  Maysoon Zayid, Maysoon Zayid: I got 99 problems… palsy is just one

It’s  1 : 45 PM on day 1209 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  feed myself boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast  read 2 Chronicles 12, publish my Disability of the Day feature, do research about HIV/AIDS, listen to music and hang out with my family.

Last night my friend, Ramon Thomas, emailed me a link to Maysoon Zayid: I got 99 problems… palsy is just one – a Ted Talk  by Maysoon Zayid about life with Cerebral Palsy and all her other problems – I love the talk it’s hilarious, heartfelt and it shows the world that the lives of the “disabled” don’t revolve around their “disabilities”. Watch Maysoon Zayid: I got 99 problems… palsy is just one below:

Day 1207: 2 Things All Human Beings Need to Survive

All we need to survive is good health and family most of the material things we could do without – that’s what I realized this summer.

It’s  1 : 56 PM on day 1207 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  read 2 Chronicles 10, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast and hang out with my family.

This summer I spent a lot of time with family which has made me realize all we need to survive is good health and family most of the material things we could do without. Do you value money and things more than health and people?
