“One last thought regarding presuming competence… to presume incompetence is to actively do damage. Let’s all agree not to do harm to our fellow human beings.” – Ariane Zurcher
It’s 2 : 54 PM on day 918 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, try to clean myself in the bathroom – I want to be able to do this properly by my birthday next year I can’t do it to my satisfaction just yet but I’m getting there 🙂 – pray, feed myself All Bran Flakes with Soy Milk for breakfast, read Exodus 38, publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands, promote my 10 For 22 Campaign – as of last night three people have donated 10 fruit trees each to reach my goal I need 19 more U.S citizens to do the same before or on March 25th (my birthday) – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, stretch my hamstrings and work.
Yesterday I read “Presume Competence” – What Does That Mean Exactly? – a blog post on Emma’s Hope Book about what it really means to presume that someone who has a disability is competent – which got me thinking what if people presumed I was competent instead of presuming I was incompetent the way things are right now I feel like people have this view that I’m incompetent until proven otherwise I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to say something along the lines of no, I don’t play computer games all day I work, try to help people and read. Do you presume “disabled” people are incompetent until they prove otherwise?
I LOVE hearing from you feel free to leave a comment below.
