We are here to serve others not ourselves – that’s what I keep learning 🙂
It’s 4 : 07 PM on day 813 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to publish my Disability of the Day feature, stretch my hamstrings, brush my teeth, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast practice typing with both hands, watch TV, feed myself a baked bean sandwich for lunch, watch some more TV and continue reading It Must Be Love by Rachel Gibson.
A few days ago I was watching an episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in which they were building a house for a family who in spite of living in a broken down house and having a special needs child had a list of things they wanted to do for others seeing their story inspired me to come up with a list of things I want to do for others and the world. Take a look:
List of things I want to do for others and the world
- Plant a tree
- Spend time with kids at a local orphanage
- Continue to make sandwiches for our housekeeper’s neighbourhood as part of Virginia’s Sandwich Run
- Raise money to stop child slavery
- Donate to and raise money for AIDS research (I have seen first-hand the effect that AIDS has on the human body people who are not on medication become excruciatingly thin, their immune systems are compromised… it’s not pretty)
- Raise more money for the World Food Programme
- Put a child through school
- Make people feel like they matter
- Make people believe that they too can make a difference and give them the feeling I get after I give (When people hear my story I want them to think to themselves if she can do all this sitting on a wheelchair imagine what I can do)
I LOVE hearing from you feel free to leave a comment below.
