Day 1135: A Lesson in Courage Taught To Me by Shea Shawhan

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear –that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12 : 20 PM on day 1135 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read 1 Kings 14,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  Bran Flakes  and boiled egg for breakfast,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

Today I read ‘Shea should just have one of her seizures and die’: Special needs girl tormented with dozens of vile texts from bullies – and the abuse is so bad her mother has to sit with her at lunch for protection I was both heartbroken and inspired by this story heartbroken because anyone would bully someone just because they had special needs (not that there’s ever any good reason to bully someone) and inspired because Shea chooses to go to school every day knowing there are people waiting to torment her can you imagine how much courage that takes the next time I feel afraid I’ll think of Shea. Do you have courage?
