Day 1435: The Best of the Ice Bucket Challenge

Fun, creative and purpose-driven ideas cannot fail – that’s what I learned this morning.

It’s 12  : 39  PM on day 1435 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, go back to sleep, watch TV, stretch my hamstrings,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, pray, read Psalm 123,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself a peanut butter sandwich and a banana  for breakfast and read some business news – i’ve recently become interested in business being self-employed is perfect for me I can work from home and and I don’t have to answer to anyone.

This morning I heard about the Ice Bucket Challenge – a challenge in which people are challenged by their friends to dump a bucket of ice water over their heads and donate $10 within 24 hours, or donate $100 to the fight against ALS – what I love about this challenge is that it’s fun, creative and purpose-driven. Day 1434: The Ordinary Extraordinary Things That Make Life Worth Living

Ordinary things can be made extraordinary if done with the right people – that’s what I realized today.

It’s 2  : 06  PM on day 1434 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray, read Psalm 122, feed myself Puttu – a breakfast dish of steamed cylinders of ground rice layered with coconut – and a banana for breakfast, brush my teeth, hang out with family and continue reading The First Phone Call From Heaven by Mitch Albom.

This morning seeing my family laughing and reminiscing I felt so light and happy the little things that we miss are the big things in disguise.

Day 1432: What’s with the selfies?

Taking pictures of myself, self, self
Taking pictures of myself, self self
Guess I’m reaching out to be assured
All I wanted was to be adored
– Nina Nesbitt, “Selfies”

It’s 1  : 17  PM on day 1432 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Psalm 120, feed myself a peanut butter sandwich and a banana for breakfast and help my brother with his speech – he has to speak about Gandhi soon I didn’t write his speech just thought I’d help him compile information.

Recently I’ve been seeing selfies floating around in cyberspace (I didn’t even know what selfies were until my sister explained it to me) maybe it’s just me but it seems a little self-absorbed to sit around taking pictures of yourself for no apparent reason when there is so much need in the world.

Day 1430: Are you ashamed to ask for help?

There’s no shame in asking for help– that’s my message to the world.

It’s 1  : 19  PM on day 1430 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Psalm 118, feed myself bran flakes with banana for breakfast and go to the doctor – there’s nothing seriously wrong with me (thank you God) I just have an infection.

This morning I finally bit the bullet and asked my mom and another family member to take me to the doctor which is something I’d been putting off for almost a week because I didn’t want to inconvenience anyone while my dad was out of the country attending my grandma’s funeral but now that I’ve asked for help without causing myself too much embarrassment I realize there’s no shame in asking for help. Are you ashamed to ask for help?

Day 1429: Rest in peace Robin Williams

Don’t judge someone else’s life because you don’t know what they’re going through behind closed doors – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 12  : 35  PM on day 1429 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Psalm 117,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   feed myself bran flakes with banana for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and prepare for my  upcoming campaign – my laptop’s charger stopped working which wouldn’t be so bad if I saved everything I needed onto my cloud drive but since I didn’t I had to rewrite my campaign video’s script lucky for me I have a good memory.

This morning I was saddened to read that Robin Williams died of suspected suicide even though I didn’t know him personally he was a part of my life I loved watching Flubber, Patch Adams and many of his other movies. Rest in peace Robin Williams thank you for the laughter and joy you brought into my life.

Day 1428: NatGeo “My Brilliant Brain” featuring Susan Polgar

Sitting on your shoulders is the most complicated object in the known universe. – Michio Kaku

It’s 12  : 39  PM on day 1428 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, stretch my hamstrings,  feed myself a peanut butter sandwich and an orange for breakfast,  pray, read Psalm 116,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, and do research for my upcoming campaign   .

Recently I watched NatGeo “My Brilliant Brain” featuring Susan Polgar– a documentary about how Susan was trained to be a chess grandmaster from a very young age – I found it fascinating that the human brain could create new connections with rigorous training.  Watch NatGeo “My Brilliant Brain” featuring Susan Polgar below:

Day 1427: The moment I truly appreciated being South African

The things we take for granted are the things that other people pray for – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 1  : 29  PM on day 1427 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, go back to bed, pray, read Psalm 115, feed myself egg with bread for breakfast, read the newspaper,  publish my Disability of the Day feature and  publish my Kid of the Week feature.

This morning I read that religious minorities in Iraq are facing possible genocide it was in that moment that I truly appreciated being South African this country has its share of problems but everybody who lives here has freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of association.

Day 1425: 5 Life Lessons for My Brother On His 14th Birthday

“Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.” – Larry Lorenzoni

It’s 1  : 55  PM on day 1425 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray, read Psalm 113, feed myself a peanut butter sandwich and bananas for breakfast,  publish my Disability of the Day feature and help my friend Ramon Thomas promote his event – on August 21 Ramon will be interviewing entrepreneurs if you like to attend this online event RSVP here https://plus.google.com/events/c6crpfi3qqk2i7o1unfht5abke8 .

Today is my brother’s 14th birthday (happy birthday Kevin) and in honour of that I wrote down 5 life lessons that I’ve learned that I’d like to pass on to him. Take a look:

5 Life Lessons for My Brother On His 14th Birthday

  1. Always say please and thank you because nobody on this planet is here to serve you if they do it’s because they want to not because they have to.
  2. Always be grateful for everything you have because there are people out there who have less than you who still manage to smile.
  3. Listen to your elders because although they don’t know everything they do know more than you because they’ve been alive longer than you.
  4. Never give up because the difference between winners and losers is that losers quit when winners carry on.
  5. Do everything you can and more to help people because when all is said and done people won’t remember how much money you had or how many cars you had but they will remember all the things you did to help others.

Day 1424: Simon Sinek: Why good leaders make you feel safe

“Truly human leadership protects an organization from the internal rivalries that can shatter a culture. When we have to protect ourselves from each other, the whole organization suffers. But when trust and cooperation thrive internally, we pull together and the organization grows stronger as a result.” ― Simon SinekLeaders Eat Last

It’s 12 : 24  PM on day 1424 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Psalm 112,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself bran flakes with banana for breakfast,     practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings .

Yesterday evening I watched “Simon Sinek: Why good leaders make you feel safe”  – a Ted Talk by Simon Sinek about why it’s essential to great leadership to make people feel safe – I found what Simon said in his talk to be so true when people who work with you don’t feel expendable they will work their butts off to make your vision a reality. Day 1423: 2 Reasons Not to Give and 1 Reason to Give

“Only when you give from the heart does it make the giving whole.” ― Stephen Richards

It’s 1 : 14  PM on day 1423 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself bran flakes with banana for breakfast,  pray, read Psalm 111,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and work on my upcoming campaign’s video – I’m not the most natural in front of the camera but after a few takes it started to get easier.

This morning I was thinking about why I give and I came up with 2 reasons why I think we shouldn’t give and 1 reason why I think we should give. Take a look:

2 Reasons Not to Give and 1 Reason to Give

  • Don’t give to get noticed – when we give so that people will notice the whole act of giving becomes about making ourselves look good not about helping other people

  • Don’t give to get anything in return – when we give expecting something in return it’s a business transaction not an act of charity and it ruins the whole experience of giving

  • Give because you feel blessed and want to bless others with your blessings
