Day 907

For every person who doesn’t believe in you, you have to believe in yourself– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6 : 42 PM on day 907 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Exodus 27,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands,   feed myself a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,    stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, watch X Factor auditions on YouTube, watch TV, make sandwiches as part of Virginia’s Sandwich Run with our housekeeper’s help,  go to physiotherapy – my legs were a bit stiff today how stiff my legs are depends on what time of the month it is so I’m not too bummed – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

Today I was making sandwiches as part of Virginia Sandwich Run and my mom said to our housekeeper when you’re done cleaning the table please help Nisha to which I said it’s fine I can do it all my life I’ve had to prove to my family, friends and even strangers that I was a capable human being I wish people would just take my word for it when I say I can do something it’s fine though because for every person who doesn’t believe in me I believe in myself. Do you believe in yourself for every person who doesn’t believe in you?

Day 906

Dream big no matter what – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 3 : 53 PM on day 906 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  stretch my hamstrings,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, brush my teeth,  pray,   read Exodus 26,    publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands, feed myself half a peanut butter sandwich and spring rolls for breakfast, drink ginger tea by myself and watch TV.

A couple of days ago I came across Tim’s Place: Where breakfast, lunch and HUGS are served! – a video about Tim Harris. a successful restaurateur who just happens to have Down Syndrome. Watch this inspirational story below:

Day 905

Don’t compare – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 2 : 17 PM on day 905 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Exodus 25,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands,  work, feed myself bread and baked beans for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on and  stretch my hamstrings.

Today I realized that I have this nasty habit of comparing my life with everybody else’s and thinking that their lives are better and more exciting than mine which is totally unfair on me because none of the people I compare myself with have had to overcome the challenges I’ve had to overcome so from today onwards I vow not to compare my life with anybody else’s.  Do you always compare yourself with other people and feel like you’re falling short?

Day 904

You have two choices in life…Choice one is to be the same and be like everyone else…Choice two is to be yourself and be a difference-maker. ― Jazlyn Roehl

It’s 3 : 48 PM on day 904 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  stretch my hamstrings,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, brush my teeth,  pray, feed myself a salad roll for breakfast,  read Exodus 24,    publish my Disability of the Day feature and practice typing with both hands.

Yesterday I watched My Autism and Me – a documentary in which 13-year-old Rosie invites us into her world and shows us how she and other people with Autism relate to neuro-typical people– what I love about this documentary is Rosie she’s whimsical and fun and she shows the world that different is cool just by being herself. Watch My Autism and Me below:

Day 903

Every “disabled” person wants you to look behind their “disability” and see the human being  – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 4 : 53 PM on day 903 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, brush my teeth,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast,  read Exodus 23,    publish my Disability of the Day feature and practice typing with both hands.

Today I was watching videos about people who have different genetic disorders as part of research for my Disability of the Day feature and I realized every “disabled” person wants you to look behind their “disability” and see the human being I could relate I love to read, write, help people, listen to music and hang out outside but some people don’t see that all some people see is my wheelchair which makes me sad more for them than for me because they’re missing out.  When you meet a “disabled” person do you look behind their “disability” and see the human being?

Day 902

My life story is going to be about how I overcame the challenges of Cerebral Palsy not about the fact that I had Cerebral Palsy  – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6  : 18 PM on day 902 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  stretch my hamstrings, brush my teeth, put a  new shirt on,  feed myself  bread and baked beans for breakfast, pray,  read Exodus 22, publish my Disability of the Day feature, prepare and publish my Kid of the Week feature,  feed myself rice and curry for lunch,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, try to clean myself in the bathroom, watch TV and practice typing with both hands.

Today while cleaning myself in the bathroom I decided that my life story is going to be about how I overcame the challenges of Cerebral Palsy not about the fact that I had Cerebral Palsy all of us have the power to decide what our life story is going to be about and I choose not to let my whole life story be about my challenges.  Will your life story be about your challenges or how you overcame them?

Day 901

Enjoy ordinary days– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6 : 01 PM on day 901 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  take off my dirty t-shirt, brush my teeth,   put a clean t-shirt on,  feed myself sweet potatoes for breakfast, pray, read Exodus 21,    publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands,  go visiting,  feed myself stir fry for lunch, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

Today has been positively blissful and laying on my bed looking out at the sky through the window I realize it’s okay to just chill and stare at the sky sometimes. Do you enjoy ordinary days or are you too busy to step back and smell the roses?

Day 900

Helping people without expecting anything in return is the most rewarding thing in life – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6 : 12 PM on day 900 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, brush my teeth,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  pray, read Exodus 20,    publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands,  feed myself baked beans and bread for breakfast,  make sandwiches as part of Virginia’s Sandwich Run with our housekeeper’s help,  watch TV and feed myself stir fry for lunch.

This afternoon we, our housekeeper and I,  spent some time making sandwiches for the kids in her neighbourhood according to her the parents of these kids drink away their paycheques as soon as they get it which means the kids who usually get food from school would go hungry on the weekends but for the sandwiches we make so I feel like what we’re doing is making a small difference I’m not telling you guys all this to be boastful I just want you guys to read everything I’m doing and say to yourselves if she can do all this sitting on a wheelchair imagine what I can do. Has giving without expecting anything in return made you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside?

Day 899

Cerebral Palsy makes the simplest things complicated– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 5 : 26 PM on day 899 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to help my brother with his project, stretch my hamstrings, brush my teeth, read Exodus 19,  pray,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  feed myself a salad sandwich for breakfast,  take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, watched TV and feed myself rice and curry for lunch.

Late last night I needed to go to the bathroom and I found myself debating whether to hold it in or ask my mother to take me to the bathroom that’s the thing about having Cerebral Palsy you have to think about things that are non-issues for most people. Do you appreciate the freedoms that come with being able-bodied?

Day 898

Every life is a message and my message is different is cool – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 2 : 30 PM on day 898 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,   pray, read Exodus 18, publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings,   take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on,  feed myself a salad sandwich for breakfast.

Today I realized every life is a message and my message is different is cool people have told me that I need braces and that I speak funny when I get excited but you know what my not-so-straight-teeth and the way I speak are part of what makes me who I am I wouldn’t change it for anything and besides when I look in the mirror I don’t see my teeth or hear the way I speak all I see is a girl who tries.  What is the message of your life?
