Day 939

Having a “disability” doesn’t mean you can’t do things it just means you have to work harder to get things done– that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 3 : 23 PM on day 939 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  pray, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  practice typing with both hands, read Leviticus 19 and take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on.

A couple of days ago I read about Eli Reimer, a fifteen-year-old who became the first person with Down Syndrome to reach the base camp of Mount Everest, having a “disability” doesn’t mean you can’t do things it just means you have to work harder to get things done. Do you see a “disabled” person and automatically assume that they can’t do the same things that you can do?

Day 938

I am going to be alright– that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 6 : 25 PM on day 938 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, stretch my hamstrings,  take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, brush my teeth,   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, read Leviticus 18, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  practice typing with both hands, work. feed myself baked beans sandwich for lunch and watch TV.

Today I was thinking about how all the important things in my life just seemed to work out I’m in good health and I have a job that’s perfect for me life is good and I believe I’m going to be alright. Do you believe you’re going to be alright in the end regardless of what is happening right now?

Day 937

Seek to impress man and you shall always be miserable; seek to impress God and you shall always be content – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 5  : 08 PM on day 937 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on,  brush my teeth, pray, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  read Leviticus 17,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my Kid of the Week feature, practice typing with both hands and try to clean myself in the bathroom.

Yesterday something happened which made me realize there’s a small part of all of us that wants to impress others thing is the people who are impressed by us today are the same people who will stone us tomorrow so I aim only to impress God because His opinion of me will never change regardless of how much I have or what I do. Do you seek to impress man or God?

Day 936

Stop counting your days and start living them– that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 2  : 45 PM on day 936 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself  a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  pray, read Leviticus 16, listen to music, publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands, prepare my Kid of the Week feature for tomorrow  and   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles.

Last night after I finished reading The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom I realized that I should stop counting my days and start living them we as human beings often want to pause, rewind or fast-forward time but while we’re busy keeping time we miss the magic of the present moment. Are you counting your days or living them?

Day 935

Never give up on yourself– that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 4  : 06 PM on day 935 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  stretch my hamstrings, brush my teeth,   take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on,  make sandwiches as part of Virginia’s Sandwich Run with our housekeeper’s help-I believe every day is an opportunity to make a difference which is why I aim to use every moment of my life to help others – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  pray, read Leviticus 15, publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands, practice picking up coins and squeezing a ball to improve my right hand’s fine motor skills, watch TV and  feed myself brown rice and curry for lunch.

This afternoon I decided to try to pick up coins to improve my right hand’s fine motor skills it didn’t work so I decided to try squeezing a ball it worked all my fingers went around the ball and I was able to squeeze quite hard some occupational therapists may think I’m beyond help but as long as there’s breath left in my body I will never give up on myself.    Have you given up on yourself or do you believe there’s hope for you yet?

Day 934

Autism has locked me inside a body I cannot control. – Carly Fleischmann

It’s 5  : 48 PM on day 934 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, brush my teeth,  feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, pray, read Leviticus 14, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself brown rice and curry for lunch, practice typing with both hands, watch TV, try to clean myself in the bathroom and stretch my hamstrings.

Today I needed to go the bathroom only everybody was outside so a lot of screaming was required to get someone to help me in moments like that you sort of think if I could walk I could do this myself that’s the worst part of having to use a wheelchair you feel trapped inside your body and you can’t explain that feeling to people who aren’t in your position because they’ve never experienced it. Have you ever felt trapped and powerless?

Day 933

There are certain things you have to accept when you have a “disability” – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 2  : 06 PM on day 933 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on,   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,   brush my teeth,  pray, read Leviticus 13, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  practice typing with both hands,  feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast and listen to music – I love Girl at Home by Taylor Swift girls here’s some unsolicited love advice if he’s got a girl at home run don’t walk you deserve so much better than a guy who would cheat on his girlfriend eventually you’ll find someone who wants to be with you and only you 🙂

This morning struggling to type with my right hand I realized there are certain things you have to accept when you have a “disability” I will always have to work hard to do things and I won’t always be able to do things the way everybody else does that’s just the way it is wishing things were different would be a waste of all the gifts that God has given me. Have you decided to accept the things about your life that you cannot change?

Day 931

No one can leave me. They don’t have that power. – Byron Katie ‏

Today our house is virtually empty my sister’s on her way back to university and my brother’s off on a badminton tour it’s just my parents and I it’s really lonely I just have to keep reminding myself that no one has the power to leave me and throw myself into my work. Do you feel left behind when people leave?

Day 930

The Lent journey is not all that dissimilar from the Christian journey  – that’s what I  learned today 🙂

It’s 7 : 47 PM on day 930 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on,  brush my teeth, pray, feed myself Appam and mutton curry for breakfast, go shopping with my father, brother and sister,  read  Leviticus 10, publish my Disability of the Day feature, prepare and publish my Kid of the Week feature, practice typing with both hands, continue reading The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom,  go with my parents to drop my sister off at the bus stop (she came home from university for Easter break and had to leave today) – every time she leaves I can’t help but feel left behind I hate that feeling but for once in my life I want to be inside the bus with my parents waving goodbye instead of me always people waving goodbye don’t get me wrong I love my parents and I appreciate everything they do for me but I just want my own life separate from them – and brush my teeth once more.

Today I was reflecting on my Lent journey and I realized the Lent journey is not all that dissimilar from the Christian journey there were many times where I ate or drank something I shouldn’t have either unknowingly or because I didn’t want to be rude but I didn’t quit Lent in the same way I can’t quit being Christian all I can do when I screw up is repent and move forward.
