Day 1092: Lessons from The Five People You Meet in Heaven

Reading the words of others is learning from them – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 12  : 50 PM on day 1092 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  feed myself boiled egg and  Bran Flakes for breakfast,  read 1 Samuel 26,  pray,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, read Stop saying that – a blog post about what not to say when someone is going through difficult situations this blog post really put things into perspective for me here I was my biggest problem was that nobody was donating to my campaign while somewhere there was a mother facing the possibility of losing her son – watch Slavery: A 21st Century Evil : Charcoal slaves – a documentary about charcoal slaves in Brazil watching the documentary I realized we inadvertently enable slavery by not asking questions about the products we buy did you know you can scan the barcode of a product into the Free2Work app and find out everything you need to know about the product –  tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today either but I’m not giving up because I know God is working on it – spend time outside – I don’t want to look back on my life and remember spending all my time in front of a laptop I want to enjoy life and help people one of my dreams is to spend time at an orphanage I know that the kids there are very loved by the people who work there but I would love to go there and give them a little extra love 🙂   – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

Last night I finally finished reading The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom – it’s about this guy Eddie who dies and the five people he meets in heaven who explain to him why things happened in his life the way it did –  I learned a few things from the book  1) all life is connected nothing happens at random 2) sacrifice is something to aspire to when you give something precious away you’re not losing it you’re merely passing it on 3) when you withhold forgiveness you’re hurting yourself more than you’re hurting the other person 4) life has to end love doesn’t 5) every life has a purpose.  What have you learned from your favourite writers?

Day 1091: Using the Bible as a guide

“I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from The Savior of the world is communicated to us through this Book.” ― Abraham Lincoln

It’s 12  : 37 PM on day 1091 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray, brush my teeth,  read 1 Samuel 25, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    publish my Kid of the Week feature,  feed myself  boiled egg and Bran Flakes for breakfast, go drop my sister at the airport – every time my sister goes back to university I’m reminded of where I should be in life it’s sad my parents say it doesn’t matter but I know it does they talk about my sister with such pride while they refer to me as their daughter who is “not well” or “slightly sick” – and  tweet and Facebook about my campaign – still no luck.

As you may know I read the Bible every day and although I don’t agree with everything in it there are a lot of things that I read in the Bible that I apply to my daily life yesterday in 1 Samuel 24 I read may the Lord be the judge between you and me may he avenge all the wrongs you have done to me next time somebody wrongs me I won’t even think about retaliating I will just say that. Is the Bible your guide through this journey called life?

Day 1090: Tell the truth

Tell the truth – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 1  : 09 PM on day 1090 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, pray, read 1 Samuel 24, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself Bran Flakes for breakfast,   tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today either – and go visit family.

Yesterday somebody assumed I was doing something that I wasn’t doing and I just went along with it because it would have taken too long to tell the truth I felt (and still feel) SO bad about lying I pride myself on being a kind, honest and generous person from now onwards I will tell the truth no matter how long it takes to tell. Do you tell the truth even when it’s inconvenient?

Day 1089: Empathy and Cerebral Palsy

Empathy– that’s what Cerebral Palsy has taught me  🙂

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1089 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Samuel 23, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  boiled egg and Bran Flakes for breakfast, take off my dirty jacket and t-shirt  and put on a clean t-shirt,  stretch my hamstrings, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and  tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today.

This morning I realized Cerebral Palsy has taught me empathy when people are annoyed or short with me I think they must be really stressed out I try to put myself in other people’s shoes because they often don’t put themselves in my shoes. Do you have a lot more empathy for others because of the stuff you go through?

Day 1088: Helping the ones you can

I can’t help everyone all I can do is help the ones I can – that’s what I keep learning  🙂

It’s 12  : 10 PM on day 1088 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Samuel 22, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  boiled egg and Bran Flakes for breakfast,   tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today but  Kate over at Groovy News Network donated $10 yesterday (thanks again Kate) now I only need to raise $70  in the next 40 days to reach goal :)  –  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and  stretch my hamstrings.

Today I realized I can’t help everyone all I can do is help the ones I can I try my best every day to help people but I always feel like it’s never enough when I’m doing something pointless like watching TV I feel so guilty because I know that we are only given a finite amount of time on this planet to do what we need to do I guess I still need to find the balance between trying to make my mark on the world and just being a twenty-two-year-old woman. Do you try to help everyone and feel like you let people down when you can’t?

Day 1087: How the media portrays differently-abled people and why it matters?

“Whoever controls the media, controls the mind” ― Jim Morrison

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1087 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth, read 1 Samuel 21,  feed myself  boiled egg and Bran Flakes for breakfast,    publish my Disability of the Day feature,  tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today –  and practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles.

This morning I was thinking about how the media portrays differently-abled people I know differently-abled people who are lawyers, authors and comedians and yet the media only chooses to show the world differently-abled people who are completely dependent on others and as a result people see us as incompetent I wish the media would be a little more balanced in the way they portray differently- abled people yes I do need a lot of help but I’m also capable of helping. Do you see only what the media shows you?

Day 1086: Seeking to impress God

The only person you should look to impress is God – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 12  : 11 PM on day 1086 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,  feed myself  boiled egg and Bran Flakes for breakfast,   read 1 Samuel 20,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, pray, tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and promote my campaign some more – still no luck but I’m not worried I know that God is helping me reach my goal even though I can’t see it 🙂

Last night my siblings and I were talking about what people have said about our bodies over the years there was a time in my life when people were saying I was chubby now they’re saying I’m too thin you just can’t win with people that’s why I only try to impress God He will love me no matter how much I weigh or how badly I screw up. Are you trying to impress everybody but the one that matters most?

Day 1085: National Book Week 2013

“Reading brings us unknown friends.” — Honoré de Balzac

It’s 12  : 05 PM on day 1085 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, read 1 Samuel 19,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today –  stretch my hamstrings, brush my teeth,  feed myself boiled egg and Bran Flakes   for breakfast and  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles.

Today marks the start of National Book Week here in South Africa National Book Week is important to me because I love reading it makes me sad that kids my brother’s age would rather play Xbox 360 than read a book reading opens your mind to all the possibilities of your life. Read a book, open your mind.

Day 1084: Actions have consequences

Actions have consequences– that’s what Cerebral Palsy keeps teaching me.

It’s 12  : 10 PM on day 1084 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, read 1 Samuel 18,  pray,     publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself  boiled egg and Bran Flakes   for breakfast,    publish my Kid of the Week feature,   tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today only $80 to go

Today I realized once again that Cerebral Palsy is a blessing in disguise  if I don’t  exercise my legs become stiff if I don’t eat right I feel bloated and sluggish in a roundabout way Cerebral Palsy has taught me actions have consequences.    Do you go through life acting as though your actions don’t have consequences?

Day 1083: A Letter From Fred

When you love someone forever with them isn’t enough– that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 11  : 37 AM on day 1083 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  feed myself  boiled egg and Bran Flakes   for breakfast,   read 1 Samuel 17,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, go fetch my sister at the airport and tweet and Facebook about my campaign -nobody donated so far today on the plus side I only have $80 more to raise to reach goal 🙂

Two days ago I came across A Letter From Fred – *OFFICIAL DOCUMENTARY* “Oh Sweet Lorraine” An Amazing Song Written by Fred! – it’s a really sweet  documentary about 96-year-old Fred who wrote a song for his late wife and had it professionally recorded – to spend 75 years with someone and still wish you had more time you must really  love that person.
