Day 1144: CinemAbility Official Trailer

Contrary to my belief there are a lot of people trying to change the way differently-abled people are perceived – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12 : 12 PM on day 1144 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,  feed myself boiled egg and  Bran Flakes for breakfast, edit my brother’s Life Orientation project on drug and alcohol abuse – no wonder kids today are so stressed there’s so much work to do in a short space of time –     read 2 Kings 2,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and  stretch my hamstrings.

A couple of days ago I wrote Day 1137: My call for positive movies about “disability” and in response to that Juliet over at From A Parrot’s Nest sent me a link to CinemAbility, a star studded documentary exploring the evolution of disability portrayals in film and television, I am SO excited that a documentary like this even exists. Watch CinemAbility’s official trailer below:

Day 1143: Being unaffected by the words of others

When you know the truth about you what other people say about you won’t affect you– that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12 : 31 PM on day 1143 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,  read 2 Kings 1,  feed myself  Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, read Should kids with special needs get special sports treatment?,   stretch my hamstrings, change my t-shirt and spend time outside.

Recently somebody referred to me as sick and my brother looked at me and asked are you going to take that to which I said I know the truth about me I don’t care what people say when you know the truth about you what other people say about you won’t affect you people can call me sick, crippled or disabled it comes in one ear and goes out the other because I know that I am none of those things. Are you unaffected by what other people say about you because you know the truth about you?

Day 1141: Apologetic no more

Don’t feel so apologetic you can’t help that you need help – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 12 : 38 PM on day 1141 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, read 1 Kings 21,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  Bran Flakes and boiled egg for breakfast, click to donate a cup of staple food to people in India via bhookh.com – people think you need a lot of money and time to give but there are sites you can go to like bhookh.com where all you have to do is click and the advertisers on the website donate on your behalf – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and spend time outside.

Today after waking my dad up at 4 AM to take me to the bathroom I realized I shouldn’t feel so apologetic for needing help after all I didn’t ask to have Cerebral Palsy and I’m doing as much as I can by myself.   Do you feel like you need to apologize every time you ask for help?

Day 1140: Always obey your parents?

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”– Ephesians 6:1-3

It’s 2 : 12 PM on day 1140 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,   read 1 Kings 20,    publish my Disability of the Day feature,  publish my Kid of the Week feature, go to church,   go visit my granny,  feed myself  Idli and Sambar  for breakfast and continue reading House Rules by Jodi Picoult.

Today talking about what parents can reasonably expect from their teenagers the person preaching at our church said it’s okay for kids not to obey their parents if what their parents are telling them is different from what Jesus is telling them which really helped me because I’ve often been conflicted about whether or not I should stand up to my elders when they say or do something that I know is wrong.

Day 1139: My message to medical professionals

You have no idea what a child is capable of so don’t predict what his or her life is going to be like–that’s my message to medical professionals.

It’s 12 : 20 PM on day 1139 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, read 1 Kings 19,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, brush my teeth and feed myself boiled egg and Bran Flakes for breakfast.

A couple of days ago I heard a story of a father who was told to institutionalize his differently-abed son because he would have nothing to contribute to the world fortunately he didn’t listen to the doctors and as a result  his son went on to graduate from university I wish doctors would inform parents of the facts and statistics and leave the predicting of the future to the psychics.

Day 1138: Good, bad or both?

Nothing is as black and white as we make it out to be–that’s what I realized today.

It’s 12 : 35 PM on day 1138 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, read 1 Kings 18,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,      feed myself boiled egg and Bran Flakes for breakfast, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  stretch my hamstrings and take off my dirty t-shirt and put on a clean to and hoodie.

Today I realized nothing is as black and white as we make it out to be none of us are all good or all bad it’s just that the so-called good people express their goodness more than the so-called  bad people do I hope I always express my good rather than my evil. Are you too quick to label situations and people as good or bad?

Day 1137: My call for positive movies about “disability”

For the world to see differently-abled people differently the media needs to start portraying differently-abled people differently–that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12 : 25 PM on day 1137 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, read 1 Kings 17,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,   feed myself  Bran Flakes for breakfast,  stretch my hamstrings, spend time outside and listen to music.

This morning I was thinking about movies and how differently-abled people are portrayed in movies all the movies I watched about “disability” have left me feeling sad and hopeless which is really unfortunate because there are a great many differently-abled people who have made their mark on the world whose stories deserve to be told.

Day 1136: Do you feel guilty for what other people do or don’t do?

I do not control the actions of others therefore I should not feel guilty for what they do or don’t do–that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12 : 52 PM on day 1136 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  feed myself  Bran Flakes  and boiled egg for breakfast,  read 1 Kings 15,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and spend time outside.

Yesterday something happened yet again which made me realize I do not control the actions of others therefore I should not feel guilty for what they do or don’t do I tend to feel guilty when my mom doesn’t get to go to some places because someone has to stay with me I tell her to go but she says it’s fine sometimes I feel like I’m sucking all the attention away from all my family members it’s really tough because I can’t blame God, my parents can’t blame me, my siblings can’t blame my parents…all of us are blameless in this situation. Do you feel guilty for what other people do or don’t do?

Day 1135: A Lesson in Courage Taught To Me by Shea Shawhan

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear –that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12 : 20 PM on day 1135 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read 1 Kings 14,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself  Bran Flakes  and boiled egg for breakfast,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

Today I read ‘Shea should just have one of her seizures and die’: Special needs girl tormented with dozens of vile texts from bullies – and the abuse is so bad her mother has to sit with her at lunch for protection I was both heartbroken and inspired by this story heartbroken because anyone would bully someone just because they had special needs (not that there’s ever any good reason to bully someone) and inspired because Shea chooses to go to school every day knowing there are people waiting to torment her can you imagine how much courage that takes the next time I feel afraid I’ll think of Shea. Do you have courage?

Day 1134: Don’t Stop Praying

Continue praying even when you feel like nobody’s listening –that’s my message to the world.

It’s 12 : 37 PM on day 1134 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  feed myself  Bran Flakes  and boiled egg for breakfast,  read 1 Kings 13,   publish my Disability of the Day feature and   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles.

Yesterday in a sermon entitled “Don’t Stop Praying” our reverend basically said we should continue to pray even when we feel like nobody’s listening I can attest to the fact that most of the time if we pray for something for long enough we will eventually get what we asked for during my anti-slavery campaign I prayed every day open people’s eyes to scourge of slavery and move them to do something and eventually things happened.  Do you continue praying even when you feel like nobody’s listening?
