Day 1271: Learning lessons through experience

Some lessons can’t be taught you have to learn them for yourself– that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s 12  : 15 PM on day 1271 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,  pray, read Job 5, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself peanut butter and banana sandwiches for breakfast, promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign –12 days still no donation but I know God is working behind the scenes I just have to keep telling people about this campaign and be patient – make sandwiches for our sisi’s (that’s what we call our housekeeper because sisi  in Xhosa means sister) neighborhood with sisi’s help,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

Yesterday something happened that made me realize some lessons can’t be taught you have to learn them for yourself. Are there some lessons that you just had to learn for yourself?

Day 1270: Are you extraordinary?

Some people are extraordinary while others have the potential to be extraordinary but aren’t – that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1270 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,  pray, read Job 4, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself egg with bread  for breakfast, promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – 11 days  no donations and it’s not for lack of trying either I’ve asked my friends, family acquaintances and even strangers to take a look at my campaign and donate if they could and out of the hundreds of emails, tweets and Facebook messages I sent out fifteen people donated (two of whom happen to be related to me) I don’t know what else I can do I suppose I could organize a bake sale or something but for that I would need help and I don’t want to inconvenience my parents they’ve got so much on their plate already  – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and spend time outside.

Yesterday I read an article about a teenage boy who did something too disgusting to write about reading that article made me realize some people are extraordinary while others have the potential to be extraordinary but aren’t. Are you extraordinary or do you just have the potential to be extraordinary?

Day 1269: What I learned from Oscar Pistorius

Be your own hero that way you won’t feel let down if your heroes fall from grace – that’s what Oscar Pistorius has taught me.

It’s 1  : 00 PM on day 1269 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth,  pray, read Job 3, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself All Bran Flakes  for breakfast, promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – 10 days  no donations I vowed not to curse during Lent so I won’t (God help me keep my vow this is going to be harder than I thought it would be) – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

As you may or may not know the Oscar Pistorius murder trial began two days ago I don’t know if he intended to kill Reeva Steenkamp or not but what Oscar Pistorius has taught me is that you have to be your own hero that way you won’t feel let down if your heroes fall from grace.    Have you stopped putting people on a pedestal and started doing things worth emulating?

Day 1268: “Perfect” Official Music Video by Pink

Pretty, pretty please
Don’t you ever, ever feel
Like you’re less than
Less than perfect
– “Perfect”, Pink

It’s 12  : 45 PM on day 1268 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  pray, brush my teeth, read Job 2, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself All Bran Flakes  for breakfast, promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – 9 days and still no donations thank you God for teaching me patience -practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and promote my campaign some more – still no luck.

A couple of weeks ago I saw Pink’s “Perfect” music video I’ve heard the song many times but it wasn’t until I watched the video that I realized that the song was about self-love not love for another person. Watch Pink’s very relatable and moving “Perfect” music video below:

Day 1267: What I’m giving up for Lent 2014

Lent

noun ˈlent

: a period of 40 days before Easter during which many Christians do not eat certain foods or do certain pleasurable activities as a way of remembering the suffering of Jesus Christ

It’s 12  : 25 PM on day 1267 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, read Job 1, pray, publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself egg with bread  for breakfast, promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – 8 days and no donations at this point I’m not desperate for donations they will come when they come I’m desperate for people to start caring that people are dying of AIDS because they don’t have money to buy medications I wish I could shake the world out of it’s apathy right now it’s kinda like people are dying of AIDS it’s so sad but there’s nothing I can do about it so I’m going to spend my time talking about Miley Cyrus twerking at the VMA’s God help the world if that’s how the majority of the world’s population is thinking – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

Last year my doctor said I should not fast so this year I am going to stop swearing for Lent I don’t know how I’m going to cope with my frustration and anger without swearing but I’ll find a way.

Day 1266: Stay Focused

If you want to reach your goals you have to stay focused– that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s 12  : 05 PM on day 1266 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, pray,   read Esther 10, publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my Kid of the Week feature,   feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – nobody donated so far today either but if I stop caring there will be one less person who does so I’m going to continue trying to make a difference.

Last night I found myself regretting the fact that I spent almost the whole day watching the South Africa versus Australia test match when I could have been reading or doing something else more constructive I realized if I wanted to reach my goals I had to stay focused. Do you waste all your time then wonder why you never reach your goals?

Day 1265: Different Expressions of Love

People express their love differently– that’s what I realized this morning.

It’s 12  : 15 PM on day 1265 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,   read Esther 9, publish my Disability of the Day feature,   feed myself egg with bread for breakfast, promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – nobody donated so far today but a lot of people have promised to donate and yesterday when I went to physiotherapy I gave my physiotherapist the URL to my fundraising page hopefully she’ll check it out and be moved to donate as well  – and watch the 3rd South Africa vs. Australia Cricket test match.

This morning I realized people express their love differently the fact that somebody doesn’t express their love for me in the way that I want them to doesn’t mean that they don’t love me. Do you think people don’t love you just because they don’t express their love for you the way you want them to?

Day 1264: Celebrate Your Life

Celebrate your life – that’s my message to myself and the world.

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1264 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth,   read Esther 8, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – nobody donated so far today either– make sandwiches for our housekeeper’s neighborhood with our housekeeper’s help – some days my left hand just spasms up and today was one of those days which made making sandwiches a messing business I spread more margarine on my clothes than I did on the slices of bread in the end I swallowed my pride and asked our housekeeper to come help me finish up (thank you sisi for all your help)- and practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles.

Today I realized I should celebrate my life more sometimes I catch myself thinking you’re twenty-two and still live with your parents but now that I think about it occurs to me that I’ve lived twenty-two years and in those twenty-two years God has done amazing things through me and my friends so what I still live with my parents maybe there are still things God wants me to learn from my parents. Do you celebrate your life?

Day 1263: David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell

“It was not the privileged and the fortunate who took in the Jews in France. It was the marginal and damaged, which should remind us that there are real limits to what evil and misfortune can accomplish. If you take away the gift of reading, you create the gift of listening. If you bomb a city, you leave behind death and destruction. But you create a community of remote misses. If you take away a mother or a father, you cause suffering and despair. But one time in ten, out of that despair rises as indomitable force. You see the giant and the shepherd in the Valley of Elah and your eye is drawn to the man with sword and shield and the glittering armor. But so much of what is beautiful and valuable in the world comes from the shepherd, who has more strength and purpose than we ever imagine.” ― Malcolm Gladwell, David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants

It’s 12  : 13 PM on day 1263 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, go back to sleep – this morning I woke up at 2 AM I tend to wake up early when my stomach doesn’t do what it’s supposed to thankfully I feel much better now and should be able to get a good night’s sleep tonight truth-be-told the digestive issues that come with having Cerebral Palsy bothers me more than not being able to walk does –  brush my teeth,  read Esther 7,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,   stretch my hamstrings, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself egg with bread for breakfast,   and  promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – nobody donated so far today I think I know what I’m doing wrong I keep asking people who I know have money to donate assuming they would gladly help me out because they do have money what I should be doing is asking people who share my beliefs to make donations because even if they don’t have the money they’ll find a way to make money to make our dream of an AIDS free future a reality – and spend time outside – it’s a beautiful blue sky day where I live I wish every day was like this but if it was like this every day I probably wouldn’t appreciate it as much as I do.

Yesterday I finally finished reading David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell in this book Malcolm tells us that the things we sometimes see as disadvantages, like disability, are advantages and the things we sometimes see as advantages, like being born to wealthy parents, are disadvantages and he goes on to explain why people we perceive to have the advantage sometimes fail spectacularly.

Day 1262: 2014 Reading List

“Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home.” ― Anna Quindlen, How Reading Changed My Life

It’s 1  : 41 PM on day 1262 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,  brush my teeth, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,   read Esther 6,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and  promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – nobody donated so far today but Justina made a $10 donation yesterday   (thanks again Justina  :) ) which brings my total raised to $375.81 only need to raise $624.19 more to reach goal.

Today I came up with a list of books I want to read this year in the hopes that listing them and putting it out there will force me to read them all. Take a look at my 2014 Reading List below:
