Day 2750: I Had The BEST BIRTHDAY EVER. Thank You All

Love is all that matters – that’s what I’ve realized

It’s 1 :  46 PM on day 2750 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read Daniel 9:9  and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – A HUGE thanks to Juliet Marrell who donated $25 which brings the total raised to  $13 234 only $5 515 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018.

Yesterday was my 27th birthday and by far my favourite one to-date the day was filled with love and cake. Thank you to everyone who came by, called and sent birthday wishes through social media I felt so loved

Day 2747: Move on with life

Life waits for no person– that’s what I keep realizing

It’s 1 : 08 PM on day 2747 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray,  have breakfast, read Joel 2:12-13  and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet –raised  $13 159 only $5 591 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018.

Today will be my first physiotherapy sessions in weeks I know it’s going to be sore because I haven’t exercised in weeks but I’m going to paste a smile on my dial and be a trooper because for me the only alternative to being in pain is being dead and while I know Heaven is awesome God apparently has lots for me still to do here and I’m grateful to still be alive to do it.

Day 2743: Try to Truly SEE

BODY SPIRIT SOUL

It is preferable to have mobility problems than to have eyes that cannot see people’s spirits and souls – that’s what I’ve realized.

It’s 1 : 00 PM on day 2743 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray,  have breakfast, read Psalm 37:8-9 and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet –raised  $12 659 only $6 091 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018.

Today I realized with great sadness that while I have mobility problems most of the world has vision problems, as in they can’t see past labels, it makes me sad and also sort of grateful for my life experience I would rather be in a wheelchair and have the ability to truly see people than have all the abilities in the world and still be blind.

Day 2740: Believe the Best about People but Also Beware the Opportunists

Believe the best about people but also when people show you who they are believe them– that’s my message to the world.

It’s 11 :  46 AM on day 2740 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read Proverbs 11:30-31  and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – A HUGE thanks to Anonymous who donated $100 which brings the total raised to  $12 659 only $6 091 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018

Yesterday someone was telling me that her cousin was misusing the social grant she was receiving for her children so I told her to tell her cousin that what she is doing is wrong and I went on to say I am eligible for a disability grant but I chose not to apply for it because my parents can afford to take care of me and also because there are people who need the grant more than I do to which she said you would be getting more than the child grant, maybe R1000, you could use it to pay the person taking care of you (in other words, her) I was gobsmacked I could not believe she managed to twist a normal conversation into a way for her to get a bigger pay cheque I also couldn’t believe she was willing to use my (I hate this word but I’ll use it because it’s contextually appropriate) disability to make a better life for herself sometimes I worry how people will treat me when my parents are no longer around.

Day 2739: The Only People I Will Ever Take Advice From

Only give advice if you’re committed to being there after people take it – that’s my message to the world.

It’s 12 :  37 PM on day 2739 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read Psalm 1:1  and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised  $12 559 only $6 191 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to help 75 kids with clubfoot (thanks so much to everyone who has helped out so far).

Today I was thinking about all the well-intentioned people who advised me to have the surgery before I had it and I wondered where most of them were now because the only people who remain with me in my recovery are some family and some friends (the first two weeks post-op were positively torturous but what I remember most is my mother who woke up whenever I called to help turn me because I was in so much pain, my sister who called every night (and still calls) to check on my pain levels and tell me to take my pain meds (she’s a 6th year in med school so she knows what she’s talking about), my brother who took it upon himself to cover my eyes while my stitches were being pulled so I wouldn’t freak out, my father who was so careful while carrying me because he didn’t want to cause me further pain, the Kumars who came by to show their moral support a few days before my surgery (thank you Kiran I love you too  I know the impromptu visit was probably your idea) and my Superhero Catherine Constantinides who called before the surgery, checked on me during the surgery and continues to check on me to this day) from now onwards I will only take advice from people who I know will be there for me after I do.

Day 2737: Be Better Than How You’re Treated

Be better than how you’re treated – that’s my message to the world

It’s 11 :  39 AM on day 2737 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read Numbers 6:24-26 and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised  $12 559 only $6 191 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to help 75 kids with clubfoot (thanks so much to everyone who has helped out so far).

Yesterday I was reminded that it’s always important to be better than how you’re treated I’m sometimes in a position to help people who once ignored me and I grab most opportunities to do so not because they necessarily deserve it but because that’s who I am (if I ignore people because they once ignored me what makes me any different from them?)

Day 2736: Some Get Wedding Pictures I Get Hospital Pictures

Sometimes the things we say lightly are the truest things – that’s what I’ve realized.

It’s 12 :  24 PM on day 2736 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read 2 Samuel 22:4 and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised  $12 559 only $6 191 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to help 75 kids with clubfoot (thanks so much to everyone who has helped out so far).

This morning I was thinking about something I said to my mother while I was in hospital I said some people my age get wedding pictures I get hospital pictures I meant to lighten the mood with something that in reality breaks my heart my mother was visibly heartbroken I saw it on her face and heard it in the cracks in her voice I now regret the joke that wasn’t actually a joke because now my mom really realizes that I understand and ache for the things I may never have I thought she would forget my words but a few days later when she thought I was sleeping she told my dad what I said (I suppose married people have to tell each other things but I feel embarrassed that my dad  knows that I know and think about marriage, sex and the happily-ever-after-life I think before my joke my parents just assumed that because I am different issues of marriage and children were not in my train of thought but actually sometimes  I think about Saturday mornings where little feet would tip-toe into the bedroom I share with my significant other to have with pillow fights with us and then I snap out of it every time a little heartbroken after which I get back to trying to make the world a better place for all the world’s children… so beautiful yet so heart-breaking),

Day 2735: Fear Has Nothing On Me

“Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. – Helen Keller

It’s 8 :  59 AM on day 2735 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read   Malachi 4:2 and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised  $12 559 only $6 191 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to help 75 kids with clubfoot (thanks so much to everyone who has helped out so far).

This morning I will make my first non-medical outing since my surgery on February 22nd I live in hope that I don’t accidentally further injury myself but whatever happens I know I can’t live in a bubble my whole life treating my body like breakable glass.

Day 2733: Get Up and Show Up NO MATTER WHAT

No matter how tired you feel show up for life – that’s my message to the world.

It’s 1 :  06 PM on day 2733 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read   John 1:16 and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised  $9 156 only $3 344 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to help 50 kids with clubfoot (thanks so much to everyone who has helped out so far).

Last night I didn’t sleep well at all (some nights are better than others -even though I sleep with a pillow between my feet to prevent pressing on my toe sometimes said pillow squashes my toe which is acutely uncomfortable since I have a screw in my toe ) in this this moment I’m so tired I and yet I still think to myself how wonderful  it is to be to be alive and to have another opportunity to make a difference.

Day 2732: 4 Things Every Future Woman Should Know #InternationalWomensDay

“Any time women come together with a collective intention, it’s a powerful thing. Whether it’s sitting down making a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a meal, in a club reading the same book, or around the table playing cards, or planning a birthday party, when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens. “ – Phylicia Rashad

It’s 1 : 56  PM on day 2732 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray,  read  Daniel 10:12 and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – A HUGE thanks to  Anonymous who donated $250  which brings the total raised to  $9 156 only $3 344 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to help 50 kids with clubfoot.

Today is International Women’s Day and in honour of that I would like to in part my little wisdom to all the little girls in the world who will grow up to be women in the future, especially my 10-month old niece Maya.

4 Things Every Future Woman Should Know

  1. You are enough – you don’t have to be anything other than who are. All that you are and will become is enough for those you love and it’s also enough for the world.
  2. There are enough opportunities in the world for every person who is willing to work to succeed – you don’t have to grind another woman down to elevate yourself. More can be achieved through collaboration than through competition
  3. You are more than your body – in today’s world there will be some backward people who will tell you that you are here to be seen and not heard speak your mind loud and proud anyway and invest in knowledge so that when you open your mouth people will know that with that pretty face and beautiful heart also comes a brilliant mind
  4. Find your tribe – It’s very important to surround yourself with people who match your values. Everybody needs someone to look up to my someone is Superhero Catherine Constantinides because she is kind, honest, courageous, hard-working, humble and generous (the way she treats people is something to behold she makes everybody feel like the most important people on the planet – whenever I’m with her I find myself just watching her interact with people hoping she doesn’t notice that I can’t stop staring)
