Day 1857: “A shift in thinking will change the world” by Emily Penn

“We’re living on borrowed sunlight.” – Emily Penn

It’s  12 :  22  PM on day 1857 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  read Acts 2, publish my Disability of the Day feature, learn one new thing –Rubies are found in shades of red, from rich darkish red to pigeon blood red and pinkish red. The red hue comes from traces of the mineral chromium.-  have breakfast and listened to music.

Yesterday I watched “A shift in thinking will change the world” by Emily Penn (thank you  Gill Tiney for recommending it to me) it’s an interesting Ted Talk about Emily Penn’s travels across the globe and how a shift in values and mindsets can preserve our planet. Watch “A shift in thinking will change the world” by Emily Penn below:

Day 326

Every experience that comes to you is an opportunity to birth your divinity. – Richard H. Levy

It’s 7: 49 PM on day 326 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, read Sorta Crunchy on Bringing the Sunshine– a fun blog post about how far is too far when it comes to going green –    feed myself an avocado sandwich  for breaKfast, listen to music, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself  naarjies – [plural of naarjie] a n orange like fruit that is unique  to South Africa– for lunch, watch TV, feed myself steamed vegetables for dinner, brush my teeth once more and watch some more TV.

Yesterday – I can’t believe I actually going to write this but if it helps someone it will be worth it – I asked my father to take the heater in our room – the room that my sister and I share – and put in my our brother’s room and he in turn asked my sister to do it and her being the smartass that she is brought the wrong heater and made some comment which rubbed my father up the wrong way and ended up in her getting a beating which left her hyperventilating with a red mark on her arm and although I wouldn’t wish that on anyone when she came back to our room in tears I realized that regardless of how you are abused the end result is that you feel like you are not worthy I knew that because every time my father said I should sit in the car while the rest of them went shopping or visiting I felt like he was engraving on my heart you are not good enough. Has a horrible experience taught you something that you would otherwise never know?

Are we connecting on Twitter? If not, say hi at http://twitter.com/Nisha360

If you’ve given to my cause or you can’t give now, please help me by sharing my cause with others. You can tweet about it like my friend Stan Faryna. This is the tweet he uses: @Nisha360 is a brave, smart young woman trying to make a better world for us all. Please help her do an amazing thing. http://bit.ly/hC7vOu

Stan’s very sweet for saying so, but feel free to write what reflects you best.

Thanks to all my friends out there who are helping me make my dream come true: to make a better world for all of us!

Day 194

You become your choices. – Unknown

It’s 3: 58  PM on day 194 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, make sandwiches for the people in our housekeeper’s neighbourhood (if you have no idea what I am talking about refer to ‘Day 184’) – I buttered the bread while my mom put the jam on – it was SO much fun the only thing I would do differently was tell my mother to buy foil instead of using the sandwich wrap but still all in all it was great day 🙂 – tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – I woke up to find that four more people had made donations to my campaign after I’d went to bed yesterday which brings my grand total raised on my birthday to $161.68 –a special  thanks to Anonymous, Melanie, @dianarusso (Diana), @laurajteacheroz (Laura) and Anonymous for their generous donations 🙂 –      feed myself rice and curry for lunch, go visit my cousin who came back from university for a week and feed myself pizza and garlic bread for dinner.

Today I signed up to be a part of Earth Hour 2011 hoping that all of the members of my immediate family would participate unfortunately for me I didn’t take into account that Kevin – my 10-year-old brother –  couldn’t survive an hour without watching TV so we reached a compromise I told him he could use everything in the living room provided that everything else in the house was switched off and although I tried my best to my okay with it I remember feeling so annoyed that he refused to cooperate  but then I realized that sometimes you should stand for something even if it means standing alone.  Do you only make the right choice when you’re in the majority?

Day 154

Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them. – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

It’s 11: 07 PM on day 154 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself  Chapati – an unleavened flatbread –   for breakfast – originally my mother had put chicken in it but I remembered just in time that it was Meat-free Mondays and took the chicken out –   tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign for a few hours – no luck today 🙁   – feed myself   Batura – deep fried bread – for lunch,  exercise for 20 minutes – I was in SO much pain the whole time I kept thinking I’m not going to complain, I’m not going to complain, I’m not going to complain – edit the questionnaire I’m going to use for my book and send it to my friend in Malaysia for her to fill out (if you have no idea what talking about refer to Day 153) – and    feed myself rice and curry  for dinner – my mom had put beef in there but I noticed it straight away so I was able to go two Mondays in a row without eating meat – I am SO proud of me 🙂

Today as I was making my rounds on Twitter telling people my story I met @noxhanti (Noxi) from Burnley in the UK and she told me that her mother had gone into exile with a group of people including Former President Thabo Mbeki during the apartheid era and that was when I truly understood the enormity of the sacrifices that ordinary people made to ensure that South Africa became a democratic country and I felt so guilty because I knew that I  seldom thought about or appreciated those who fought for a free South Africa so to Noxi’s mom – I apologize for not knowing your name –   and hundreds of others just like her I say thank you for bringing racial equality to my country.  Are you the brave man or woman who’s going to bring peace to today’s society? 🙂

Day 133

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.  ~Native American Proverb

It’s 10: 44 PM on day 133 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself  Batura – deep fried bread –for breakfast,   tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign for a few hours – no donations were made to my campaign today but on the plus side I just found out three hours ago that  my campaign has been extended from March5th 2011 to March 5th 2012– I feel like jump for joy too bad I can’t LOL 🙂 –    feed myself rice and curry for lunch, exercise for 20 minutes and  feed myself bun and chicken nuggets for dinner – I forgot it was meat-free for a second and accidently ate chicken LOL although I suppose 2/3 is not too bad for my first attempt 🙂

A few weeks ago I read a blog post called 10 Ways To Go Green And Save Green by @JustDiii (Dian) and subsequently made a commitment to eating three meatless meals every Monday, but one thing led to another and soon I had forgotten all about it until I read How do human CO2 emissions compare to natural CO2 emissions by Gpwayne this morning   and realized that the future of the planet depended on what we did in the present. Have you ever wondered what would become of our children’s children if we depleted all of Earth’s natural resources? 🙁
