Beyond One Day

Tomorrow is Mandela Day, and I won’t be at Breath of Life.

Not because service doesn’t matter to me, but because I believe Mandela’s legacy was never meant to be reduced to one day on a calendar. His life was built on decades of commitment, sacrifice and service—not for recognition, but because it was the right thing to do.

The truth is, Breath of Life is often full on Mandela Day. Many people arrive wanting to give their time, and that kindness is appreciated. But I have always felt drawn to the ordinary days—the days when there are fewer people around, when hands are needed and showing up is less visible.

For me, the greatest tribute to Mandela’s legacy isn’t one day of service. It is choosing compassion, dignity and commitment throughout the year, especially when there is no special occasion reminding us to do so.

Mandela’s legacy is not something we complete for a day. It is something we live.
