We can take the power out of words– that’s what I learned today 🙂
It’s 6: 25 PM on day 434 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee by myself, feed myself a boiled egg for breakfast, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, create a username for Jenelle Ramsami who will be writing on this blog while I’m India, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch TV and tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck.
Today as I was preparing my Disability of the Day feature I wondered if disabled people would mind that I used the word disability in the title I honestly don’t mind that people label me as disabled and stare at me because I know that there is so much more to me than the shell that is my body most people look at disabled people and think that we are stupid and devoid of personality when nothing could be further from the truth I speak three languages and I am the first to poke fun at my disability especially when I’m around people who’ve never met me before I find that it’s a great way to break the ice. Do the labels people put on you define you?
Are we connecting on Twitter? If not, say hi at http://twitter.com/Nisha360
If you’ve given to my cause or you can’t give now, please help me by sharing my cause with others. You can tweet about it like my friend Stan Faryna. This is the tweet he uses: @Nisha360 is a brave, smart young woman trying to make a better world for us all. Please help her do an amazing thing. http://bit.ly/hC7vOu
Stan’s very sweet for saying so, but feel free to write what reflects you best.
Thanks to all my friends out there who are helping me make my dream come true: to make a better world for all of us!
