Day 980: The death of Vuyo Mbuli a reminder that we should all live out stories we would be proud to look back on

All of us should live out stories we would be proud to look back on – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

Yesterday I heard that Vuyo Mbuli, a co-host on South Africa’s longest running breakfast show Morning Live, died on Saturday night while at a rugby match with his son needless to say I was shocked you don’t expect a healthy-looking 46-year-old man to die suddenly Vuyo’s death has reminded me that all of us should live out stories we would be proud to look back on  everybody from the South African President to the ordinary man on the street have sent their condolences to Vuyo’s family and friends. Are you living out a story you would be proud to look back on?

RIP Vuyo sharp sharp as you would say.

A couple of months ago I came across Matthew Jeffers’s inspirational story take a look it’s guaranteed to inspire you:

Day 978: Accept that which you cannot change

Accept that which you cannot change– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

Last night wasn’t one of my most restful nights my poor parents must have  woken up ten times between them to give me water and turn me from side to side happily now that my killer headache has disappeared I feel much better although my nose is still running oh well it is what it is I will feel better when I feel better it’s not like I can change the fact that I have a cold.    Do you accept that which you cannot change because you know that you cannot change it?

Day 977: Taking steps towards your goals every day

Take steps towards at least one of your goals every day– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s  2 : 13 PM on day 977 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Numbers 30, publish my Disability of the Day feature, stretch my hamstrings,  take off my dirty t-shirt and put on a clean one, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  practice typing with both hands  and   tweet and Facebook about my campaign –  still need to raise $888 to reach my goal but I’m not giving up NEVER NEVER NEVER give up on something you believe in.

Today I realized it doesn’t matter if I reach my goal today, tomorrow or the next day as long as I take steps towards it every day. Do you take steps towards at least one of your goals every day?

Day 976: If it doesn’t feel right don’t do it

This morning I was going to do something that didn’t feel right in the name of a good cause but then fate stepped in and saved me from myself next time I won’t wait for fate to save me from myself if something doesn’t feel right I just won’t do it. Have you done something that didn’t feel right and regretted it afterwards?

This morning as I was combing through my bank statement I yearned for a simpler time in my life a time when I didn’t have a bank account or any of the adult worries that I have now it’s funny all kids want to do is grow up and all adults want to do is stay young we just never seem to be happy in the present I for one am going to stop yearning for my childhood and start enjoying being twenty-two. Do you sometimes wish you could be a kid again?

Day 974: Disabled in South Africa

South Africa is not a bad place to live if you have a disability – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s  3  : 49 PM on day 974 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray, read Numbers 27, publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet and Facebook about my campaign – a staff member of Not For Sale got in touch with me to tell me that she changed the settings on my page so that international  donors wouldn’t receive an AVS error message when they made donations I’m going to test it as soon as my mom comes home from work if it works I will be the happiest person on the planet 🙂 –    stretch my hamstrings,  take off my jacket and old t-shirt and put on a new one – it always takes me a lot longer longer to take off layers of clothing and truth be told I didn’t think I could do it but I kept trying and chanting in my head in God all things are possible  and two hours later after much sweating I was in a clean t-shirt 🙂 –  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast and practice typing with both hands.

Two days ago I read Medical Monday: Disabled in Vietnam on Whispers of a Barefoot Medical Student which made me realize  South Africa is not a bad place to live if you have a disability sure I wish that public transport was wheelchair accessible and sure I wish there were more special schools in this country but at least here most kids who need it have access to physiotherapy and occupational therapy and you rarely hear of a child dying from a treatable condition like Hydrocephalus.    Do you appreciate the advantages that come with living in the country that you live in?

Day 973: Supporting South African music and everything else

Patriotism is voluntary. It is a feeling of loyalty and allegiance that is the result of knowledge and belief. A patriot shows their their patriotism through their actions, by their choice. – Jesse Ventura

The South African Music Awards took place this past weekend and continuing with the music theme I’m going to share with you some of my favourite songs by South African musicians if I as a South African don’t support everything South African how can I expect people in other countries to do so. Listen to the best of South African music below:

Day 972: Happy Mother’s Day

Mothers are the people who love us for no good reason. And those of us who are mothers know it’s the most exquisite love of all. – Maggie Gallagher

Today is Mother’s Day and in honour of that I would like to say to my mom thank you for giving me life and for everything else you do for me I appreciate it Happy Mother’s Day.

Day 971: Be grateful even for the things you wish you didn’t have to have

Be grateful even for the things you wish you didn’t have to have because some people don’t have those things –that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s  2  : 51 PM on day 971 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself bread and a boiled egg for breakfast,  pray, read Numbers 24, publish my Disability of the Day feature,   practice typing with both hands and  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles.

Yesterday while my mom and I were at physiotherapy my dad went to order me a new wheelchair apparently a run-of-the-mill wheelchair costs anywhere between R4 000 and R8 000 when I heard that I couldn’t help but think of all the people who don’t have extra money laying around to buy wheelchairs for their kids sure it sucks that I have to use a wheelchair to get around but at least I have a wheelchair I should ask the people we’re buying a new wheelchair from whether they can fix this wheelchair and give it to someone in need.   Are you grateful even for the things you wish you didn’t have to have because you know that some people don’t have those things?

I LOVE hearing from you feel free to leave a comment below.
