Day 1020: The bravest song I’ve ever heard

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 1  : 15  PM on day 1020 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to publish my Disability of the Day feature,  sleep -I lost track of time watching The Mentalist only went to bed after midnight -stretch my hamstrings,  brush my teeth, feed myself a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast, pray, read Joshua 3,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, tweet and Facebook about my campaign – still  no luck what hurts the most is not that people aren’t donating the money will come when it comes there’s still plenty of time what hurts the most is that people don’t seem to care that slavery still exist if we do care for the people who have nobody who will 🙁  –         and practice typing with both hands.

A couple of days ago I heard Warrior by Demi Lovato it is by far the bravest song I’ve ever heard. Listen to it below you’ll get what I mean:

Day 1019: Taking responsibility for your life

Growing up means taking responsibility for your past, present and future – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 1  : 38  PM on day 1019 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, feed myself a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast, pray, try to clean myself in the bathroom – I tried my best but ended up having to ask for help I can’t explain to people who haven’t experienced it what it’s like to need someone to help you wipe yourself it’s SO humiliating I die a little each time –             read Joshua 2,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,   take off my dirty turtleneck and t-shirt and put on a clean t-shirt, make sandwiches as part of Virginia’s Sandwich Run with our housekeeper’s help – today I made sandwiches thinking of Nelson Mandela his whole life has been dedicated to serving others I think he would be happy that the next generation is keeping his legacy of service alive 🙂 –    and practice typing with both hands.

Today I realized blaming other people for the things they didn’t teach me and the things I didn’t learn wasn’t going to do me any good because at the end of the day I and only I am responsible for where I end up in life.  Have you taken responsibility for your past, present and future?

Day 1018: Family, Fun and the Forgotten To-Do List

What’s important is how much fun you have not what you accomplish – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 3  : 53    PM on day 1018 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, pray,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,         read Joshua 1,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,   spend time outside – it’s such a beautiful day out I so appreciate that I’m alive to  see it 🙂 –   and practice typing with both hands.

Today I spent some time outside playing catch with my brother (he was throwing and I was catching) I missed more than I caught but that’s okay both of us had fun and most importantly I showed him he was worth my time that’s all I think anybody wants from us to know that they are worth our time. Do you do everything you do with the intention of achieving your goals or do you sometimes do things just for fun?

Day 1017: The profound words of Kate Leong

Sometimes other people can express your thoughts better than you can– that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 3  :  14  PM on day 1017 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, remove my t-shirt and jacket and put a new t-shirt on, stretch my hamstrings – today I actually cried it hurt so bad having my hamstring stretched I can’t imagine what it must be like for my mother to have to stretch my hamstrings knowing it’s causing me so much pain she must feel so powerless –  put on a turtleneck, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,         read Deuteronomy 34,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,   tweet and Facebook about my campaign –  no luck   –   and practice typing with both hands.

Yesterday I read We Can’t Stop Living… – a blog post by Kate Leong  about carrying on with life in the face of tragedy – the last couple of paragraphs  of the post express so beautifully everything I’ve ever wanted to say about making the best of every situation that I feel compelled to share it:

“Repurpose your pain, your suffering, your hurt into something that will work for you.  If you take control and decide to learn and grow and help others BECAUSE of your pain…you’ll find that you start feeling less and less pain yourself.

Yes, things happen TO you in life.

And it sucks.

But things happen FOR you as well.

And sometimes, even though it’s hard to see, those things are one in the same.”

Day 1016: Giving yourself the gift of acceptance

Acceptance is one of the best gifts you can give yourself  – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 1  :  06  PM on day 1016 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,     read Deuteronomy 33, pray, publish my Disability of the Day feature,   tweet and Facebook about my campaign –  no luck but the day is not over yet 🙂  – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  feed myself a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast, practice typing with both hands and listen to music – Everything Has Changed by Taylor Swift ft.Ed Sheeran is stuck in my head sing with me people I just want to know you better know you better know you better now.

Today reading Community and Identity – a further perspective – a blog post containing a letter from Anonymous about how his/her son is less open about his Autism than he used to be because he now realizes that there’s a stigma attached to it – I realized how lucky I was to have never felt ashamed of the fact that I have Cerebral Palsy growing up I do remember not wanting to be different but I never tried to hide the fact that I had Cerebral Palsy when people would ask me why are you in a wheelchair I would answer with my head held high I have Cerebral Palsy even though I didn’t know how to explain it to people it makes me so sad to know that there are people out there who go out of their way to hide that which is different about them because I believe what makes you different makes you beautiful.  Have you accepted yourself warts and all?

Day 1015: The things we waste our time on

Some people waste their time doing the stupidest things– that’s what I learned today.

It’s 1  : 45   PM on day 1015 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  feed myself a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,    read Deuteronomy 32, publish my Disability of the Day feature,   tweet and Facebook about my campaign –  Juliet ( @jparrottmerrell) made a $20 donation  yesterday (thank you Juliet I REALLY appreciate your contribution)  – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and practice typing with both hands.

Today while promoting my anti-slavery campaign I heard Say Yes to the Dress – a reality show about women picking out their wedding dresses – in the background I know we can’t all be about changing the world all the time but it’s beyond me why anyone would waste an hour of their life watching someone they don’t know pick out her wedding dress. Do you waste your time doing things that you know don’t matter?

Day 1014: There’s a time for everything

There’s a time for everything– that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 3  : 09   PM on day 1014 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  feed myself a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,    read Deuteronomy 31, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  prepare and  publish my  Kid of the Week feature, email,  tweet and Facebook about my campaign –  still  no luck  but I’m doing this for all the people who have had their free will taken away from them so I won’t give up – and practice typing with both hands.

This morning my brother asked my dad if he could go to my cousin’s house tomorrow (school ended on Friday it’s officially winter break here in South Africa) and my sister asked if she could go somewhere with her friend in that moment I couldn’t help thinking I wish I had friends to go places and do things with sad I know it’s never been easy for me to make friends people my age have left home and are doing their own thing which leaves young kids I have almost nothing in common with so I’ve thrown myself into improving myself and helping people knowing that one day I will have all the friends I’ll ever need. Do you keep your nose to the ground and work hard knowing that one day you will  have everything you want?

Day 1013: Have a little faith

Have a little faith– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 1  : 36   PM on day 1013 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  feed myself a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,   pray, read Deuteronomy 30, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    tweet and Facebook about my campaign –  no luck – and practice typing with both hands

This morning I awoke thinking of the future but instead of laying awake and fretting about it like I usually did I went back to sleep subconsciously deciding to do what I can and leave the rest up  to God after all God  has been taking care of me thus far and my life hasn’t turned out too bad. Do you have enough faith to do what you can and let do the rest?

Day 1012: You and only you decide what defines you

You and only you decide what defines you– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 12  : 10   PM on day 1012 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, read Deuteronomy 29, publish my Disability of the Day feature, stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty jacket and t-shirt and put on a clean t-shirt,   practice typing with both hands and tweet and Facebook about my campaign –  no luck.

This morning laying in bed I realized you and only you decide what defines you there are people in my life (I won’t mention any names) who answer she’s sick / she has a slight disability when asked what I’m doing with my life as if that answers the question it’s sad that people choose to define me by my “disability” but I can choose to define myself differently the fact that I have a “disability” means nothing I can be whatever I want to be. Are you defined by other people’s definition of you?

Day 1011: Adjusting goals

Sometimes you’ve got to adjust your goals – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 1  :  37 PM on day 1011 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, read Deuteronomy 28, publish my Disability of the Day feature, stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty t-shirt and put on a clean t-shirt and jacket,    practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast and practice typing with both hands.

Today I decided to keep my anti-slavery campaign going for another three months I know that I (with God’s strength) can raise $1 000 for the Not For Sale Campaign I just don’t think I can do it by July 15th which is why as of today my campaign ends on October 15, 2013.
