Day 1113: A touching Facebook message

You never know whose life you’re touching just by being yourself and doing what you feel is right– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 12 : 23 PM on day 1113 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray,  feed myself boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast, read 2 Samuel 16,    publish my Disability of the Day feature,  tweet and Facebook about my campaign – nobody donated so  far today either 15 days to go –  and continue reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

This morning someone sent me a Facebook message he basically said that while he was unemployed earlier this year God made him think of me and congratulated me on my achievement (building a well in Kenya)  I was so touched by that all I’ve ever wanted to be was a source of inspiration for people and it looks like I was that for at least one person.    Have you ever touched someone’s life just by being yourself and doing what you feel is right?

Day 1112: Say something that matters

If you’re going to say something say something that matters– that’s my message to the world   🙂

It’s 5  : 25 PM on day 1112 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray, read 2 Samuel 15, go to an Indian church service – this service was longer than western services and you couldn’t eat anything before receiving Holy Communion and I’m glad I didn’t because after the service the priest specifically said we should always fast before receiving Holy Communion I ate like a horse after the service though LOL –   feed myself  Cheese and Tomato sandwiches for breakfast,  publish my Disability of the Day feature,  go to braai (barbecue)/birthday party and   publish my Kid of the Week feature.

Last night I was on social media just reading what people were saying and to my dismay I found that people were saying a lot and nothing at all at the same time I know that not everybody cares about the things I care about and I don’t expect them too but what I do expect is that everybody care about something greater than themselves. Do you speak a lot without saying much at all?

Day 1111: Count your wealth in how many people you help

Count your wealth in how many people you help and you’ll never be poor– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 1 : 17 PM on day 1111 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray,  feed myself boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,read 2 Samuel 14,    publish my Disability of the Day feature,  tweet and Facebook about my campaign – nobody donated so  far today either 17 days to go –  and start reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho – people have been raving about this book forever and just from reading the first few pages I can see why.

Yesterday afternoon on our way to my physiotherapist’s appointment my dad and I were talking about money and I remember saying count your wealth in how many people you help I may never be monetarily rich but when I think about all the people I’ve been fortunate enough to help I feel like the richest person on the planet.  Do you always see yourself as poor because you measure wealth in terms of money?

Day 1110: Outliers: The Story of Success

Success = talent + opportunities + hard work– that’s what I learned yesterday.

It’s 2 : 00  PM on day 1110 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray,  feed myself boiled egg and  All Bran Flakes for breakfast,read 2 Samuel 13,     play Cut the Rope on the Samsung tablet – it’s apparently good for fine motor skills – make sandwiches as part of Virginia’s Sandwich Run with our housekeeper’s help and publish my Disability of the Day feature.

Yesterday I finished reading Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell the book basically deconstructs success and shows us how successful people become successful we look at people like Bill Gates and think he is where he is in life only because he’s smart but this book shows us that all successful people have talent, a series of opportunities and a willingness to work hard. Are you successful today because you had talent, opportunities and a willingness to work hard?

Day 1109: Our perception of our abilities VS the world’s perception

The way we perceive ourselves and our abilities is often different from how other people perceive us and our abilities – that’s what I learned yesterday.

It’s 12 : 47 PM on day 1109 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray,  feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast,read 2 Samuel 12,    publish my Disability of the Day feature,  tweet and Facebook about my campaign – nobody donated so  far today either – change my t-shirt, stretch my hamstrings and practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles.

Yesterday someone who hadn’t seen me in a few years came by and just as she was about to leave she said to my parents her speech has gotten clearer which was funny because up until that very moment I didn’t think there was anything wrong with my speech sure there have been times when people didn’t understand me but I always assumed that that was because I was nervous or speaking too fast so I repeated what I was saying and people understood I hope that comment doesn’t make me self-conscious when I speak.     Has someone ever pointed out to you something about yourself that you hadn’t noticed before?

Day 1108: Africa needs a hand up not a hand out

Africa needs a hand up not a hand out – that’s what I wish the world would understand.

It’s 12 : 17 PM on day 1108 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast, pray, read 2 Samuel 11,    publish my Disability of the Day feature and  tweet and Facebook about my campaign – nobody donated so  far today either.

On Monday evening I was watching The Amazing Race one of the contestants who was coming to Africa said something like let’s go adopt some African babies I took great offense to that African children don’t need to be adopted out of the continent all they need is love, food, water, shelter, clothing, healthcare and an education in short all an African child needs is a chance to survive and thrive.    Do you give Africa a hand out instead of a hand up?

Day 1107: Happy Birthday Neethu

“Sisters function as safety nets in a chaotic world simply by being there for each other.” ― Carol Saline

It’s 4  : 09 PM on day 1107 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,pray, read 2 Samuel 10,  feed myself  boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,   publish my Disability of the Day feature    and go to a braai (barbecue) – today is National Braai  Day, Heritage Day and my cousin’s kid’s birthday so they decided to celebrate by having a braai  it was fun we ate and played 30 Seconds 🙂

Today my sister turns 19 in the 19 years that she’s been alive she’s taught me more about being bold than anybody else on the planet. Happy Birthday Neethu may you always speak your mind and refuse to be a doormat for anyone.

Day 1106: Experiences that forever change you

Some things you do change you forever– that’s what I learned today.

It’s 3  : 04 PM on day 1106 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  feed myself  boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  pray, read 2 Samuel 9, publish my Disability of the Day feature,     tweet and Facebook about my campaign – nobody donated so so far today either – go visit family and feed myself brown rice, vegetables and chicken curry for lunch.

Today I noticed a tap in the bathroom was leaking and because of the things I learned while raising money to build a well in Kenya I just couldn’t have that so I asked my mom to close the tap tightly immediately it’s cool to see that something I did three years ago still affects me. Are you forever changed by something you did in the past?

Day 1105: Knowing when enough is enough

Know when enough is enough– that’s what I learned yesterday.

It’s 2  : 00 PM on day 1105 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,  pray, feed myself  boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast, read 2 Samuel 8, publish my Disability of the Day feature,    publish my Kid of the Week feature,  tweet and Facebook about my campaign – nobody donated so so far today either – and spend time outside with my brother.

Yesterday I was at an annual community event I was slipping and sliding off my wheelchair because for some reason my new wheelchair’s belt refused to work properly usually I would have powered through the pain and stayed for the whole event but yesterday after my brother’s performance I told my parents I wanted to go and we left as much as I want to do everything everybody else does for as long as they do my first priority is maintaining my health so sometimes I’ll have to leave early or not go to some places and that’s okay.  Do you know your limits and live within them?

Day 1104: Being the best of yourself on your worst day

You can be the best of yourself even on your worst day– that’s what I learned yesterday.

It’s 11  : 22  AM on day 1104 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, feed myself   boiled egg and All Bran Flakes  for breakfast,   pray, read 2 Samuel 7, publish my Disability of the Day feature and tweet  and Facebook my campaign -no luck so far today.

As you may or may not know I wasn’t feeling my best yesterday but after a few childish moment I made sandwiches for  the kids in our housekeeper’s neighbourhood and tried my best to be upbeat what yesterday taught me was that you can be the best of yourself even on your worst day. Are you the best of yourself even on your worst day?
