Day 1338: Whatever Will Be Will Be

I finally learned to say

Whatever will be will be

I’ve learned to take

The good, the bad and breathe

‘Cause although we like

To know what life’s got planned

No one knows if shooting stars will land

Vanessa Hudgens, “Whatever Will Be”

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1338 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  read Psalm 25,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,     feed myself boiled egg and bran flakes for breakfast,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – still on 80% so far today.

Yesterday I was struggling with something until I adopted a whatever-will-be-will-be attitude I figured I had no control over what was going to happen anyway so why bother stressing about it. Are you stressing about things that are out of your control or have you adopted a whatever-will-be-will-be attitude?

Day 1335: Look Up by Gary Turk

“I took a step back, and opened my eyes, I looked around, and then realized that this media we call social, is anything but when we open our computers, and it’s our doors we shut.” – Gary Turk, Look Up

It’s 12  : 44 PM on day 1335 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  read Psalm 22,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself egg with bread for breakfast, continue reading Divergent by Veronica Roth  promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – still on 80% but I’m grateful things could be worse I could be on 0%.

Two days ago I watched Look Up– a spoken word film by Gary Turk about how we are connected to social media and disconnected from each other – I could relate to what Gary said in his film there have been times when people have come over for a visit only to spend the whole visit looking down at their phones when that happens I can’t help but think am I that uninteresting that you have to talk to another person while you’re talking to me. Watch the truthful depiction of humanity today in Look Up by Gary Turk below:

Day 1334: 3 Advantages of Being in a Wheelchair

There are some advantages that come with being in a wheelchair – that’s what I realized two days ago.

It’s 1  : 34 PM on day 1334 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  read Psalm 21,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – no luck so far today but my aunties from America gave me $200 yesterday (thank you God and thank you aunties) which I donated to Eradicate AIDS on their behalf which brings my total raised to $802.85 I’m so grateful and happy 🙂 –  feed myself bran flakes for breakfast,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and promote my campaign some more – still on $802.85 so far today but it’s better than being on $602.85.

Two days ago after voting I realized that there are some advantages that come with being in a wheelchair (I’ll admit the disadvantages of being in a wheelchair far outweigh the advantages of being in a wheelchair but still there are advantages) and I took the liberty of listing them. Take a look:

3 Advantages of Being in a Wheelchair

  1. I seldom have to wait in line (wherever I go whether it’s at the polling station or at the airport when I show up people either make way or I jump the queue another way I’m like a living VIP pass both my family and I think it’s pretty cool)
  2. I always have a parking space (wherever I go there’s a parking space reserved especially for me only a few people in the world can say that)
  3. I get to meet really cool people (oftentimes when I’m out in public strangers come up to me and start a conversation I will never forget this one time my sister and I were waiting for our dad to come pick us up from the movies and this woman asked if I had CP when my sister asked how she knew the woman told us about her daughter who died who also had CP)

Day 1333: Do you make yourself look bad attempting to make other people look bad?

How you treat people and what you say about them says more about you than it does about them – that’s what I keep realizing.

It’s 12  : 26 PM on day 1333 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray,  read Psalm 20,   publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself bran flakes for breakfast and   promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – still on 60% I’m so frustrated I’m doing everything I know how to do and I’m still not getting any closer to goal.

Two days ago something happened that made me realize how you treat people and what you say about them says more about you than it does about them. Do you make yourself look bad attempting to make other people look bad?

Day 1332: Vote South Africa

With the right to vote comes the responsible to do so – that’s my message to my fellow South Africans.

It’s 2  : 30 PM on day 1332 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,   read Psalm 19,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign –still no luck– feed myself scrambled eggs and bread for breakfast, go boating – my family and their friends decided they wanted to go from one end of the river to another on a boat and they invited us along it was ok but my favorite part of the day is going to be when I cast my vote for the first (I didn’t vote in previous elections for some reason) – and enjoy a barbecue  – after boating we had a barbecue.

Today is election day here in South Africa I urge every South African who has registered to vote to go and vote people died so that we could have the right to vote the least we can do is show up at our polling stations any time between 7 AM and 9 PM and cast our votes.

Day 1331: Are you present in all aspects of your life?

I have to be present in all aspects of my life – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 12  : 30 PM on day 1331 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  read Psalm 18,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – still on $602.85 things could be worse I suppose I could be on $0 (thank you to God and everybody else who has helped get my Eradicate AIDS campaign this far I REALLY appreciate it)    –  feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and promote my campaign some more – still on 60% so far today(God I know you have more important things to do but if you have a few minutes to spare could you help me help people living with and dying of HIV/AIDS. Please and thank you)

Yesterday something happened that reinforced the fact that I have to be present in all aspects of my life I can’t change what has happened and I can’t control what will happen all I can do is do the best I can in the present moment. Are you present in all aspects of your life?

Day 1330: My thoughts on the unequal distribution of wealth in Africa

“If you take from the most wealthy and give to the least wealthy, it’s good. It starts to balance out.” – Bill Gates

It’s 12  : 00 PM on day 1330 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth,  feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, read Psalm 17,   publish my Disability of the Day feature,   promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – still on $602.85 but a lot of people promised to donate which is great –  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, stretch my hamstrings and promote my campaign some more – still on 60% so far today.

Recently someone visiting my town from overseas said something along the lines of there’s so much poverty here and yet you have a Mercedes Benz plant when he said it like that it sounded crazy but he had a point there’s an unequal distribution of wealth in all African countries and if something doesn’t change Africa will remain the ugly step-sister of all the other continents.

Day 1329: Top 8 Places to Visit in Cape Town

The best places on earth are on our doorsteps – that’s what I realized over the past two days.

It’s 1  : 53 PM on day 1329 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray,   brush my teeth, read Psalm 16,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my  Kid of the Week feature, feed myself  egg with bread for breakfast  and promote my Eradicate AIDS campaign – I extended my campaign by 4 days to make up for the days that I was on vacation so now my campaign ends on 18 July 2014.

Yesterday evening we – my family and I – returned from our two day Cape Town vacation and I feel like it’s my duty to tell you where to go if you ever find yourself in Cape Town so I compiled a list of the places to visit in Cape Town. Take a look:

Top 8 Places to Visit in Cape Town

  1. Robben Island – it’s the island where Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activist were imprisoned during apartheid  (we didn’t get to go there this time because it was fully booked but when I went last time I left there knowing how small I was and how great I could be).
  2. Table Mountain – Table Mountain was voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World some time ago and rightly so from the top of the mountain you can see the sea and the city it’s breathtaking (we went there on a public holiday so the cues very long but because I was on a wheelchair they allowed me and a few others who were with me to go through first we had to wait about fifty minutes for our other family members to join us at the top of the mountain and when everyone finally got there I reminded that there were stairs almost everywhere on that mountain (it’s a heritage site so they can’t alter it in any way to make it more accessible) so I could only go around the perimeter of the mountain but that’s okay I still enjoyed it).
  3. Cape Point – it’s a scenic landform  (we didn’t go there this time because it was too far from where our apartment was).
  4. Canal Walk – the second largest mall in South Africa (that mall has everything you could ever want from designer clothes to electronics while there my sister, my brother and I stopped by at Marcels for some frozen yogurt I had the English Toffee frozen yoghurt it tasted good I could believe it was yogurt and not ice-cream).
  5. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden – it’s a garden with all sorts of flowers and trees (I really enjoyed seeing the flowers and trees but what I enjoyed more than that was seeing  mothers on the grass tickling their children, families picnicking… stuff that you don’t usually see in this day and age).
  6. Two Oceans Aquarium – it’s a large aquarium with different kinds of marine life (I loved the starfish, the purple jellyfish and the predators exhibition – a part of the aquarium that’s set up like a gallery so you can sit or stand on the top floor and watch sharks swimming in the huge tank -)
  7. Grand West Casino – it’s the best casino in Cape Town (my sister and I don’t gamble so we hung out with our brother in the arcade while the others went gambling I felt so bad that we were giving our brother money to play with while just kilometres down the road some people didn’t have proper roofs over their heads but as my sister pointed out it was fun for our brother)
  8.  V & A Waterfront – it’s a mall with a view of the ocean.

Day 1327: Day 1 of Cape Town Vacation

Routine is good but having different experiences are what makes life worth living– that’s what I realized yesterday.

It’s  8  : 09 AM on day 1327 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, get changed – we  are going to the V & A Waterfront and maybe we’ll hit some museums and the aquarium – and pray.

Yesterday on day 1 of our Cape Town vacation we saw Table Mountain – one of the most beautiful most mountains in the world – Canal Walk – one of the largest shopping malls in South Africa – Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and Grand West Casino.

Day 1326: Traveling with Cerebral Palsy

Make the best of everything – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s  7  : 33 AM on day 1326 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, get changed – we  are going to Table Mountain and other places today we’ll blog about it with pictures in the next few days – and pray.

Yesterday we arrived at Cape Town only to realize that our oh so beautiful apartment which we knew was wheelchair inaccessible was even more wheelchair inaccessible than we originally thought (the living room, a kitchen and a bathroom is downstairs while everything else is upstairs) oh the joys of travelling with Cerebral Palsy I will make the best of it.Do you try to make the best of everything?
