Day 503

The outcome of a conversation depends not on what is said but rather what is heard – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6 : 20 PM on day 503 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee by myself, go to church,  feed myself  Idli –   a south Indian savory cake popular throughout India – and Sambar – a dish common in South India and Sri Lankan Tamil cuisines, made of toor dal – for breakfast, pray, read Genesis 14 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,   prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, prepare and publish my Kid of the Week feature, drink water by myself from a glass –  I was SO SO proud of myself because I could not do that a few months ago – tweet with people, listen to music, watch TV,  feed myself rice and curry for lunch and tweet some more.

This morning in church the reverend talked about how we are constantly being blessed – the sermon was titled Living the Blessing – and how someone even saying that they’ll pray for you is a blessing in that moment I remembered how many times I snubbed people when they said they’d pray for me because I thought they were only saying that because I was in a wheelchair and I was embarrassed just goes to show something said with positive intention can be dangerous when heard with negative perception. Does everything you say get taken the wrong way?

Day 502

God has a wicked sense of humor– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8 : 06 PM on day 502 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Genesis 13 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,  reply to a  comment on this blog, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast,  work, make sandwiches on  behalf of Virginia’s Sandwich Run, exercise for a few minutes – my brother was using the laptop – work some more, feed myself rice and curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today while making sandwiches I remember thinking how ironic it was that I who found it difficult to even hold a knife wanted to help people while the rest of the people in the house who could do everything by themselves were busy watching movies eventually my mother helped me grudgingly which irritated me because I believe that you should NEVER EVER see helping others as a chore I guess my family is just a microcosm of the world nowadays most people see helping others as an obligation or as a means to make themselves look good in the eyes of others it makes me really sad. Have you ever felt like you were the bud of God’s joke?

Day 501

You must give credit where credit is due no matter how insignificant what your praising might be in the bigger scheme of things – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6 : 07 PM on day 501 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Genesis 12 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,   prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, reply to a few comments on this blog,   work, watch TV – my brother was using the laptop –   feed myself spaghetti bolognaise for lunch  and work some more.

Yesterday I was watching TV and this ad called Remember Your Power by Eskom – South Africa’s national electricity supplier – came on it was about the fact that we need to conserve electricity but it was also so much more than that watching it made me feel like I could make a difference in every sphere of life and that I think deserves a standing ovation you’ll see what I mean when you watch the advert. Take a look at the advert below:

Day 500

Times are changing fast– that’s what I learned today 🙁

It’s 7 : 28 PM on day 500 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Genesis 11 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible, feed myself a boiled egg for breakfast, drink juice by myself, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, reply to a few comments on this blog,   work,   feed myself spaghetti bolognaise for lunch, watch TV – my brother was using the laptop – and work some more.

Today while working I was listening to the radio and I was SHOCKED at how sexually explicit the music was every second lyric of almost every song had the words fuck or hump in them is it just me or is that totally inappropriate no wonder my brother came home from school in the fourth grade and asked my father what a condom was whatever happened to the days when the lyrics of songs actually had meaning. Are you able to adapt to the new cultural norms quickly enough?

Day 499

Whatever happens on a given day you’ve got to show up and be the best that you can be – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7 : 36 PM on day 499 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Genesis 10 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,  prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, work, feed myself  a polony sandwich for breakfast, work some more,    feed myself a banana muffin – our neighbor who we didn’t know brought them over (only we could live somewhere for nine years and not know our neighbors)  – for lunch, finish working, watch TV and   feed myself another banana muffin for dinner.

As you know – if you’ve been reading this blog regularly – my parents have their spats now and then but last night thing escalated to who another level they started arguing at night – the usually argued in the afternoon and went to bed at night – which meant none of us – my sister, my brother or I – got any sleep but you know I still got up bright and early and did my job because I knew that extraordinary people did things ordinary people did not do. Are you the best that you can be every day regardless of the circumstances?

Day 498

Thought = creation. If these thoughts are attached to powerful emotions (good or bad) that speeds the creation. – The Secret (movie)

It’s 6 : 52 PM on day 498 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Genesis 9 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,  prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself  Oats for breakfast,  work,   feed myself rice and curry for lunch, work some more,  feed myself Chapati and chicken curry for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Today while working I remembered the day before I got approached to do this job laying in bed asking no one in particular to help me become financially independent and just like that opportunities seemed to be everywhere which I’m very grateful for but now I wondering if it was just a fluke or me using my thoughts to create the life I want so I am going to – in my head – think of three things that I want to happen in the course of my lifetime (I can’t tell you what the three are because you guys might want to help the universe along but I will let you know when the three things on my list happen) and let it manifest itself without setting a time limit or sabotaging myself by thinking contradicting thoughts. Do you believe in the power of thought and what it can do to help you create the life you want?

Day 497

When opportunity knocks open selectively – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 7  : 25 PM on day 497 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Genesis 8 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, feed myself  garlic bread for breakfast, drink tea by myself,  work,   feed myself rice and curry for lunch, work some more and  feed myself mango for dinner.

Today I was in a meeting – I can’t discuss the specifics because it involves people who aren’t my family –one thing led to another suddenly I felt like the other person was taking over then in another meeting a couple of hours later  I felt like I was pushed into doing something I didn’t want to do I am starting to think I’m the problem that people see something in me that let’s them know that I’m a walk over. Do you open the door to every opportunity even when you don’t know what it entails?

Day 496

With age you grow in grace – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 5: 59 PM on day 496 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, read Genesis 7 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible – I read Genesis 6 last night – publish my Disability of the Day feature, prepare and publish my Kid of the Week feature, drink tea by myself, go to church, hang out with my grandma, tweet with people,   feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet some more and watch TV.

Today while at church an elderly woman asked my mother – while I was sitting right there –has she been like this from birth to which my mother said yes I guess because she didn’t feel like telling her my whole life story meanwhile I was fuming – on the inside – about the fact that that woman asked my mother something about me while I was sitting right there although now that I think about it I realize that there was no way the woman could have known that I wasn’t cognitively impaired. Does your age reflect how much you’ve grown in grace?

Day 495

When you have a vision you can take steps to move towards it – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6: 41 PM on day 495 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, work, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, drink water by myself, work some more, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature and continue working only stopping to make sandwiches for Virginia’s Sandwich Run.

Today while I was helping myself in the bathroom I finally figured out what I wanted out of life – I always knew I wanted something I just didn’t know what it was – I want to be independent in every way and not be a burden on anyone when you’re born “disabled” it’s almost like – at least for me – most people don’t expect you to participate in life – get a job, pay your own bills, buy your own house, etc – and although it makes me sad I plan on raising above society’s lack of expectation by doing everything a contributing member of society does. Do you have a vision for your life?

Day 494

When you see that nobody around you is doing what needs to be done you should step up and do it even if it’s not your responsibility – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 6: 51 PM on day 494 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Genesis 5 as part of my ongoing quest to learn more about the Bible,  prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, work, feed myself a hotdog for brunch, work some more, go to physiotherapy and finish working.

This morning I was watching my brother sleep suddenly what happened last night crossed my mind – my parents were having a HUGE fight – I don’t know about what – and for the first time I saw sadness in my brother’s eyes so I said it’s not your fault ( I told him what it was like for me growing up and how I thought they fought because I was disabled) they’re just kidding around (we both knew that wasn’t true they were cursing at each other and breaking picture frames) they’re a little crazy in the head then after a brief pause I continued you’re going to change the world someday he tried to contradict me but I said if I can change the world you can too it was just a heartbreaking situation what annoyed me the most was that I was forced to be the parent while my parents were in the other room venting – and I promised myself that I would instill in him respect for women which is not my responsibility I know but who else is going to do it my parents though they love us are lost in their own world and my sister she’s got her own life story of my life really always cleaning up others people’s mess and making sure everybody’s okay – when I was younger I would make it my job to mend fences between my mom and dad whenever they got into a fight (Note to all my family members who might read this: it is not my intention to make mommy and daddy look bad I am just writing about my experience I can’t help that they were a part of that experience if you can’t understand that you are free to leave this blog and never return). Have you ever had to step into a role that was not your own for the good of someone you love?
