Day 319

We are not human beings we are human becomings – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 8: 24 PM on day 319 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, clean myself –  my mother wasn’t here so I had to do it myself which is a good thing I suppose 🙂 – feed myself Chapati for breakfast,  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck today but my cousin and her husband made a second combined dination of $200 yesterday although I wasn’t able to appreciate the gift fully at the time because I couldn’t stop thinking about my brother I miss the little guy hopefully God will take my good deeds into account and make him feel better soon 🙂 – feed myself rice and curry for lunch hang out with my mom– she came back home to  change – feed myself oranges for dinner,  brush my teeth once more, go with my father to drop my mother back off at the hospital and watch TV.

Today because my mother was in the hospital with my brother I had to do everything virtually by myself and I was struggling to put on my t-shirt I realized that it was okay that I could only get one sleeve of my shirt off because maybe tomorrow I could take them both off and eventually undress and redress myself and that I guess is my message to all of you accept yourself where you are and be grateful for all you can do. Are you stuck in the mud or constantly becoming more of who you are?

Stan’s very sweet for saying so, but feel free to write what reflects you best.

Thanks to all my friends out there who are helping me make my dream come true: to make a better world for all of us!

Day 318

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. – Romans 12: 9

It’s 8: 04 PM on day 318 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, hang out with my mother – she didn’t go to work today because my brother was sick – feed myself Chapati and chicken curry for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – go visit my brother in hospital – he’d been wheezing the whole week and we finally took him to the hospital where the doctor decided to keep him until he’s chest clears truth-be-told I think he’s having a ball watching all this favorite TV shows with my mother to keep him company – watch TV and feed myself rice and curry for dinner.

A couple of days ago I read Slams against people with special needs…and one bit of awesome on Love That Max and I like Ellen – blogger at Love That Max – was furious with a commenter on News Aggregator who posted a picture of a little girl who has Down Syndrome with a caption underneath it that read I can count to potato although I didn’t know quite what to say to the media about how they portrayed “disabled” people until today HOW DARE YOU those of us have “disabilities” have to work twice as hard and twice as long to accomplish the simplest of tasks and quite frankly we don’t need to open magazines to find that everybody’s laughing at us and not with us furthermore if you are an editor of a magazine that allows tasteless comments to be published in your magazine I will come after you I maybe a small fish in a big pound but you will hear me when I roar. Do you hate what is evil but fail to do anything about it when you see it around you?

Day 317

You’ve got to turn your passion into a business – that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s 9: 03 PM on day 317 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a hotdog for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – read Lessons in overcoming adversity from the poorest parts of the world on Love That Max – it was an honest look at the lives of women on this continant – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch TV, tweet about my campaign some more – still no luck 🙁 –feed myself whole-grain bread and oranges for dinner, brush my teeth once more and compiled a post for Youth Voices – a group/website started by friends of mine that aims to connect youth who make a difference with youth who want to make a difference.

This morning I was thinking about all the stuff I thought about last night paying for my own medical aid, half the utilities and buying groceries all of which are things my parents can more than afford but as we’ve established in one of my previous post I am NOT the mooching type with that said I am going to buy my own domain name from WordPress and get some advertisers onboard defying everybody who thought that I would never amount to anything in my life although I know that what I’m doing is not really about them. Are you under the illusion that to be an armature is to love the game?

Day 316

What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient… highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it’s almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed – fully understood – that sticks; right in there somewhere. – Cobb (played by Leonardo Dicaprio in the movie Inception).

It’s 8: 09 PM on day 316 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, do research on YouTube Direct – a platform that allows bloggers to have user-generated content directly onto their blogs (see why below) – tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, brush my teeth once more and watch TV – I feel somewhat under the weather I think I’m going to call it an early night.

Last night I was watching the evening news when Make every day a Mandela Day – the slogan of the Mandela Day initiative – appeared on the screen and in that moment a light bulb came on in my head and I decided that I would create a page on this blog called Every Day Hero where ordinary people like you can upload a video of yourself or someone else doing something that gives back to your town, your country or even the world with the intention of inspiring others to do the same. Do you believe that a single idea can give rise to a new world?

Day 315

Children are the brightest treasures we bring forth into this world, but too large a percentage of the population continues to treat them as inconveniences and nuisances, when they’re not treating them as possessions or toys. –Charles  De  Lint, The Onion Girl

It’s 7: 29 PM on day 315 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself hotdog for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more–still no luck 🙁 – read Sablog: a “blog” by Sabrina, age 6 on Love That Max – a charming post about life through the eyes of a six-year-old –watch TV, feed myself sweet potato and plain yoghurt for dinner, brush my teeth once more and watch some more TV.

Yesterday my mom was talking to my brother about something and she said you must try to be perfect to which he responded we’re not made to be perfect otherwise what’s the point and in that moment I felt the truth of his statement because I had always believed that perfection was an illusion and that we should measure our worth not by the things we have but rather by the things we do. Has a child in your life ever said something that made you see God in them if only for a moment?

Day 314

There comes a time in life where you have to decide that there’s a difference between being polite and being a walk-over– that’s what I learning today.

It’s 6: 50 PM on day 314 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself sweet potatoes and plain yoghurt for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet some more about my campaign – still no luck 🙁 – feed myself oranges for dinner brush my teeth once more and continue reading Love Virtually by Daniel Glattauer – I started reading it about two weeks ago and truth-be-told if something drastic doesn’t happen with the ending this book won’t be getting a good review from me.

Yesterday we had two visitors who I heard complaining that my grandma wasn’t making sense for the second time in two weeks – first to me last week and then to my parents yesterday – she has what is suspected to be Dementia – and although I am almost always well-behaved this time if I could have walked over there I would have ripped them apart because I have a problem with people who pick on people who don’t have the capacity to defend themselves. Do you have boundaries as to what you will stand for and what you won’t?

Thanks to all my friends out there who are helping me make my dream come true: to make a better world for all of us!

Day 313

Ninety-nine percent of the population is kind and caring it’s just the other one percent that are selfish and egotistical – that’s what I learning today.

It’s 8: 33 PM on day 313 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, donate £7.36 to Sophie Brown’s cause – Sophie visited South-West Uganda with her mom and she was so touched by the plight of the children there that she started raising money to building a classroom I LOVE her she’s a girl after my own heart 🙂 – make 40 sandwiches for our housekeeper’s neighborhood (if you have no idea what I’m talking about refer to Virginia’s Sandwich Run) – a HUGE shoutout to my baby brother – he’s 10 turning 11 next month – for helping me make the sandwiches today I am SO SO SO proud of you buddy today you became a real-life HERO! 🙂 – feed myself chicken biryani for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – prepare my Kid of the Week feature for tomorrow – this week’s Kid of the Week is 2011 Miss Teen Maryland In’tl. 2 time Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Owner M.O.D.E.L.S. (Making Ongoing Differences in Every Life through Service) Margo Huffman feed myself sweet potatoes and plain yoghurt mixed with onions and chilies for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I was watching (TV)5 – radio on TV – and they featured some of their DJs who were part of Bikers for Mandela – a group of South African celebrities who travelled across the country spending sixty-seven minutes in service at each one of their stops – and not thirty minutes after that MTV’s My Super Sweet Sixteen – a show about teenagers and how much time and money they will spend on their sweet sixteen parties – aired my point is the world is screwed up and we should learn how to distinguish between the great and the down-right idiotic. Are you part of the ninety-nine percent or the one percent?

Day 312

No single person can liberate a country. You can only liberate a country if you act as a collective. — Nelson Mandela

It’s 8: 10 PM on day 312 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself whole-grain bread and avocado for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – ‘Anonymous’
made a donation – thanks Anonymous 🙂  – feed myself chicken briyani for lunch, tweet some more about my campaign – no further luck – watch TV,  feed myself whole-grain bread and avocado for dinner, watch some more TV and brush my teeth once more.

As you know before 1994 South Africa was a very racially divided country and that manifested itself in sports as well – white people only watched and played rugby while black people only watched and played soccer – until 24th June 1995 when Nelson Mandela walked onto the field donning his green and gold jersey – green and gold are South Africa’s national colours – and matching cap to hand over the Webb Ellis Cup – it is tradition that the president of the hosting country hands over the Rugby World Cup trophy – to then Springbok – that’s what we call our rugby team – captain Francois Pienaar and with just forty-nine days to go before we have to defend our title as world champions – the second time around – I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Boks luck and teach those of who know nothing about rugby a little something. Take a look at the video below:

Day 311

Everyone knows something useful which others probably don’t. If you are an expert in your field, use that expertise to blog. Write down what you know most about or what you’re most passionate about. And blog it! Remember, knowledge which is not shared, is useless.Nicky (@rocksstar10 on Twitter)

It’s 8: 28 PM on day 311 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth – twice once before my mother left for work and once after she was in a hurry to leave for work and she didn’t give me time to brush my teeth properly the first time– watch TV, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself chicken briyani for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more–still no luck :(– feed myself for whole-grain bread and avocado for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I was reading If a tragedy happens and nobody cries, is it still a tragedy? on Outrageous Fortune – a blog written by a mother of twins one of whom – Malachi – happens to have Cerebral Palsy – and as I read it I could not help but feel offended and hurt by the insinuations that her son was deficient in some way but this morning I woke up and realized that I should advise rather than criticize so I came up with a list of things that I wish someone had told my parents when I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Take a look

The Do’s and Do’s of Raising a Child with a “Disability”

• Start the necessary therapies e.g. physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy as early as possible so that it will be a part of your child’s lifestyle

• Read as much as you can about your child’s condition

• Get connected with other parents that are facing the same challenges that you are (you know the saying it takes a village to raise a child I think that is particularly true if you’re raising a child with a “disability”)

• Treat your child with a “disability” as you would any of your other children while keeping his/her limitations in mind (in my school days when I got a B in math my parents would pat me on the back and say good job whereas, if my sister got a B you wouldn’t hear the end of it and although I know they were just trying to be supportive the difference in the expectations that they had for my sister and the expectations they had for me really made me feel like they didn’t give a shit (excuse the vulgar language))

• Don’t be too quick to help your child rather push him/her to do things by himself/herself otherwise what’s going to happen to him/her when you’re gone because let’s face it no matter how young you are you will die before him/her (you hope!)

• You’re child sees himself/herself through your eyes so whatever you do, DO NOT pity him/her i.e. if you pity him/her he/she will pity himself/herself.

Day 310

Each one of you has your own platform. Do not let the trappings here fool you. Mine is a stage in a studio, yours is wherever you are with your own reach, however small or however large that reach is.

Maybe it’s 20 people, maybe it’s 30 people, 40 people, your family, your friends, your neighbors, your classmates, your classroom, your co-workers. Wherever you are, that is your platform, your stage, your circle of influence. That is your talk show, and that is where your power lies.

– Oprah Winfrey

It’s 8: 36 PM on day 310 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a hotdog for breakfast, watch a few WordPress tutorial videos – I wanted to know what those widgets in my dashboard were for and I have to say I was AMAZED you can create your own chatroom and do all sorts of other stuff…I LOVE WordPress 🙂 –tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, watch TV, feed myself oranges for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I was watching an episode of The Tyra Banks Show which focused on her B.I.O (Beauty Inside and Out) Campaign that aims to expand the definition of beauty for women around the world and it was only as I was watching that I realized how narrow the definition of beauty was so in the spirit of creating a change I am asking you to leave comments on this post telling me what you love about the way you look I LOVE my bone structure it’s different but it’s totally unique to me. Are you using your circle of influence to make this world a better place?
