5 Terms To Never Use On People Who Are Visibly Different

“Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate, and to humble.” -Yehuda Berg

It’s 12 : 09 PM on day 2810 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read a Bible verse, take a picture for have breakfast and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised $14 469 only $4 281 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018.

Today I was thinking about words people have used to describe me and those like me and while I know people generally mean no harm I thought I’d list the words that sting me the most so that nobody offends people who are visibly different by accident.

5 Terms To Never Use On People Who Are Visibly Different

  1. Special needs (I have the needs that everybody else I just have extra needs on top of that)
  2. Disabled
  3. Crippled
  4. Handicapped
  5. Differently-abled (most people don’t have a problem with this one but whenever strangers use that word to describe me I hear Nisha can’t walk but as a consolation there’s a lot of other things she can do [I don’t know what those things are but she can do things] the undertone of unintentional pity, even with this political correct term, is something I can’t stand I would prefer that if people had to mention my difference at all they say Nisha has Cerebral Palsy, a neurological condition that affects movement and speech, it’s factual, to the point and has no connotations)

Day 2809: #StandInTheSand and Western Sahara’s Freedom

“I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself.” – Nelson Mandela

It’s 1 : 02  PM on day 2808 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read a Bible verse, take a picture for have breakfast and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised $14 469 only $4 281 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018.

Today is Africa Day and as my ongoing demonstration of solidarity I #StandInTheSand with the Saharawi People as they continue to fight for freedom from Morocco’s 42-year illegal occupation of the Western Sahara (#StandInTheSand is an international solidarity campaign launched by  Saharawi organizations in the refugee camps as well in the occupied territory). To join the #StandInTheSand movement stand in sand, take a picture and share it on social media using #StandInTheSand. Let us stand for Western Sahara like other African countries stood for us,

Day 2808: The Gift of Life

Life is a gift and being alive is a great opportunity – that’s what I know.

This morning I was having a rough time feeling frustrated and irritated but when I went outside and sat under the blue sky I realized my “problems” are but a speck of dust in the bigger scheme of things.

Day 2806: My Alive Day

Every day should be a celebration of life – that’s what I know

It’s 12 : 34  PM on day 2806 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read a Bible verse, spend time outside, have breakfast and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised $14 469 only $4 281 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018.

Recently I decided that on the 22nd of every month I would celebrate my Alive Day (celebrating every month since my surgery on February 22nd 2018) everybody told me the surgery on the 22nd February would be a simple one but I knew that many times even the simplest of surgeries were botched so I woke up on the morning of February 22nd afraid that I would never see another sunrise and now the 22nd of every month (and every other day) is a celebration  of life for me. Being alive is a privilege.

Day 2805: 14 Places on my Travel Bucket List

“No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.” – Lin Yutang

It’s 12 : 52 PM on day 2805 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read a Bible verse, help a very special someone, spend time outside – ever since i’ve recovered from surgery on every sunny morning I go out stare at the sky and think how wonderful it is to be alive it’s true what they say you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone (or thankfully in my case only almost gone) – have breakfast and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised $14 469 only $4 281 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018.

Yesterday thinking back to days leading up my recent surgery and knowing that although I was proud of who I was and the way I chose to live that far I regretted not travelling more I decided to make a list of all the places I want to visit before my 35th birthday (8 years from now) I don’t know who will come with me or where I’m going to find the money but I’m going to makes it happen I want to have the full human experience i want to die with memories not unrealized dreams. Take a look at the list of places I want to visit.

Day 2804: One day it will be my turn

One day it will be my turn – that’s what I know.

It’s 12 : 42 PM on day 2804 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, read a Bible verse, spend time outside, have breakfast and promote my 50 New Feet Campaign benefiting MiracleFeet – raised $14 469 only $4 281 more to raise by June 17, 2018 to reach my new goal of helping 75 kids with Clubfoot by June 17, 2018.

This morning my mom called from India to say after she comes back at the end of the month she’s going to India again in August to attend my cousin’s wedding I’m glad I wasn’t on the phone because I wouldn’t know what to say I can’t exactly tell her not to go because I don’t want anyone to feel tethered to me or my wheelchair (that is my burden and blessing and I will bear it with grace and dignity) and I can’t exactly tell her I’m fine if she goes because my dad is a guy and he can’t help me with some stuff and the sisi (our helper) can’t stay over because she has kids so basically mom can’t go wherever whenever but I will never tell her that because I don’t want her to wake up one day resenting me for all the things she didn’t do. One day I won’t be the person left behind for others to look after I will travel the world and meet new people too (I just know it in the deepest part of me I don’t know how I know I just know) I’m determined not to be limited to these four walls I deserve the full human experience and I’m going to fight for it. One day it will finally be my turn.

Day 2803: Royal Wedding 2018 And Other Stuff

Not everything you do has to have a deep and profound sometimes you can just do it because you want to – that’s what I’ve realized.

I plan on just chilling today.

Today I will be watching the Royal Wedding before I head to lunch at my cousin’s house I know these things won’t change the world but I need a serious break from reality so I’m going to watch the Royal Wedding and enjoy family time without chastising myself for wasting time.
