Day 923

When you slip and fall get up and carry on – that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 1 : 58 PM on day 923 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, try to clean myself in the bathroom, put on a clean shirt – I almost fell off the toilet trying to put on the shirt that’s me I guess always living on the edge LOL 🙂 – pray, read  Leviticus 3 and John 12: 12-17, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  publish my Kid of the Week feature, practice typing with both hands, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles,  feed myself Appam and potato curry for brunch  and stretch my hamstrings.

Today marks a week to go till the end of Lent I’ll admit I’ve eaten things containing meat products by accident but I’m determined to finish Lent. When you slip and fall do you get up and carry on?

Day 863

Cerebral Palsy is preparing me for life– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s  3 : 25 PM on day 863 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, stretch my hamstrings, brush my teeth, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, pray, feed myself All Bran Flakes with apples for breakfast,  read Genesis 37,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands and watch TV.

This morning it took me ages to change my t-shirt but after much perspiration – literally – I did it I never quit that’s one of the things I love about myself in a way me having Cerebral Palsy will serve me well in the future because everything in life requires perseverance which is the one thing I have in abundance thanks to Cerebral Palsy.   Have the challenges you’ve faced in the past been a blessing in disguise?

Day 858

Practice makes perfect– that’s what I keep learning  🙂

It’s  1 : 52 PM on day 858 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty t-shirt and put a clean t-shirt on, brush my teeth, pray, read Genesis 32, feed myself baked beans on toast for breakfast, publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands,  practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, practice taking off and putting on a t-shirt and watch TV.

This morning I had a hard time putting my left hand through its sleeve so hours later I decided to try doing it again with another t-shirt it’s still hard but I will keep practicing until I get it right. Do you have the perseverance to do something until you get it right?

Day 836

Saying I’ll try again tomorrow is not the same as giving up– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s  4 : 57 PM on day 836 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  stretch my hamstrings, take off my t-shirt and put a new one on – today I did the whole thing by myself I didn’t even need help putting my hands through the sleeves I’m so proud of myself I guess it’s easier undressing and redressing myself while lying on the bed – publish my Disability of the Day feature,   brush my teeth,   practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, practice typing with both hands,     feed myself a noodles for lunch and watch TV.

This morning after I had taken off my t-shirt and put a new one on I decided to try and take off my pants I almost got it down to my knees by then it was 10: 30 AM and there was so much I wanted to do with my day so I stopped, thought I’ll try again tomorrow and asked our housekeeper for help when you have some sort of special need your life basically revolves around doctor’s appointments and different types of therapies (physical therapy, occupational therapy and if necessary speech therapy) I sometimes wonder what neuro-typical twenty-one-year-olds do with their time and wish I could be like them for a day just to know what it feels like not to have to struggle to do everything. Do you feel like you’re giving up every time you pause what you’re doing and say I’ll try again tomorrow?

Day 833

Build on successes – that’s what I learned today 🙂

This morning I decided to build on my Christmas miracle and try to take off my dirty t-shirt and put on a clean one it took me about fifteen minutes to push my left-hand out through the sleeve but because I didn’t quit I was eventually able to take off the dirty t-shirt and put a clean one on I will build on today’s success and practice putting on and taking off a t-shirt until it becomes easy for me. Do you build on successes or do something right one time and think you’re done?

Day 829

As long as you don’t quit you have a chance to succeed– that’s what I learned today 🙂

It’s  1 : 14 PM on day 829 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice typing with both hands, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and stretch my hamstrings.

As you may know it’s very hard for me to do things for myself in the hygiene department – Cerebral Palsy causes people to have poor motor skills so it’s hard for me to do the simplest things –  but every day I try to get better at it and today while trying to help myself in the bathroom I realized as long as I didn’t quit I had a chance of succeeding maybe not today or tomorrow or the next day but someday I would be able to do things by myself that’s true for everyone as long as you don’t quit you still have a shot at your dream. Do you give yourself a chance to succeed?

Two days ago I was watching the 200m Butterfly hoping that South African Chad Le Clos would win a gold 50m to the finish I accepted that we would probably only get a bronze but Chad had other plans he pulled himself to the finish in the last meter  and won gold by two-hundredth of a second beating his hero Michael Phelps it was UNBELIEVABLE to watch  just goes to show you can take the boy out of South Africa but you can’t take the South Africa out of the boy most of us just don’t know how to quit. Congratulations Chad Le Clos!

Day 645

You are who you are because you do what you do– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 6: 50 PM on day 645 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself Oats for breakfast, drink tea by myself, prepare and  publish my Disability of the Day feature, work, exercise my right hand – my new goal is to learn how to type with both hands –  watch TV,     feed myself sweet potato, tapioca and fish curry for lunch and watch some more TV.

Yesterday marked the one month countdown to Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday and in honour of that I’m going to share with you some  of the lessons that he has taught me:

  1. Perseverance: He spent 27 years in prison so that all South Africans could have the same rights and opportunities
  2. Forgiveness: Even after everything he went through he walked out of prison ready to forgive and move forward
  3. We are small but we can be great: Nelson Mandela was born just like everybody else and enjoyed a pretty ordinary childhood the but when push came to shove he was willing to sacrifice everything for what he believed in and that’s what made him the great person he is today

Day 632

Your joy doubles when you share the things you love– that’s what I keep learning 🙂

It’s 3 : 16 PM on day 632 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself All Bran Flakes and an avocado sandwich for breakfast, drink  Green Tea by myself,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, listen to music and  exercise my right hand –today I had no trouble picking up the knife but I found myself  in tears thinking about all the drunk drivers who  don’t find themselves in wheelchairs meanwhile I have to struggle to do things other people  take for granted through no fault of my own or anybody else’s for that matter funny thing is I kept picking up and putting down the knife through my tears I guess my message to you guys  is if you have to cry about how unfair your life is go ahead and do it but don’t stop  trying  to better yourself in the meanwhile.

As you may know I can’t keep anything good to myself which is why I’m sharing with you two people I LOVE to Pluto and back – Megan and Liz.  Take a look at my favorite Megan and Liz YouTube videos:

Day 627

You have the power to create the world you want– that’s what I keep learning  🙂

It’s 4 : 59 PM on day 627 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth,    feed myself a boiled egg and All Bran Flakes for breakfast,  publish my Disability of the Day feature, exercise my right hand –I practiced picking up a knife for hours for now the only way I can do it is to drag it to the end of the table and grab it just as it’s about to fall  – feed myself butternut and chicken curry for lunch and hang out with my sister and her friend.

Today practicing picking up a knife with my right hand I wondered how many people are grateful that they can do the things I struggle to do which is when A Month of Gratitude came to me – the idea behind A Month of Gratitude is to get everyone who reads this post to write down what they are grateful for every day for the next month thus making the world more grateful  – I know what you’re probably thinking it’s easy for you to be grateful you have practice actually it’s not there are some days I open my Gratitude Journal and can’t think of anything to write because all I can see is everything that is wrong with my life but then I think things could be a lot worse I can see, I can hear, I can taste, I can touch, I can feel and come up with something to be grateful for in that moment.  Are you making use of the power you have to create the world you want?

Please take part in ‘A Month of Gratitude’, tell people about it and leave a comment below.
