Day 2367: International Women’s Day 2017

“I just love bossy women. I could be around them all day. To me, bossy is not a pejorative term at all. It means somebody’s passionate and engaged and ambitious and doesn’t mind learning.” –Amy Poehler

It’s 11 : 38 AM on day 2367 of my journey towards independence and I managed to pray, have breakfast, read Daniel 10:12 and learn a new word – Definitions for portmanteau
Also called portmanteau word. Linguistics. a word made by putting together parts of other words, as motel, made from motor and hotel, brunch, from breakfast and lunch, or guesstimate, from guess and estimate.

Today is international Women’s Day and I’ve been thinking about both the opportunities and responsibility that come with being a woman today we as women have many opportunities that those who came before us didn’t and with that comes a responsibility to create a better present for young girls today and a better future for girls not yet born.  Happy International Women’s Day everyone.

Day 2159: My Message to Girls and Women

“One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” – Simone de Beauvoir

It’s 11 : 35  AM on day 2159 of my journey towards independence and I managed to   have breakfast, pray, read Habakkuk 3:17-18,  and work on my  25 Smiles Campaign    –   Bev B   donated $25   (thanks SO MUCH  Bev)  which brings the total  raised to $7 225 only  $5 275 more to raise to reach my second goal of raising $12 500 for Smile Train before Jan 10 2017 (SO SO SO GRATEFUL to everyone who has supported this campaign so far   🙂 ) .

Yesterday in honour of Women’s Month (here in South Africa) I recorded a message for girls and women everywhere. Watch “My Message to Girls and Women” below:

Day 1614: 5 Reasons to Educate Girls

You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation.” ― Brigham Young

It’s 1 :  10 PM on day 1614 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to  brush my teeth, pray,    read Jeremiah 31, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  learn one new thing –The word “laser” is an acronym. It stands for “Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.” feed myself egg with bread  for breakfast, read and comment on When life gives you lemons! – a post Gaynor Young wrote about Educate Generations (thanks Gaynor for writing the post) – and  promote my Educate Generations campaign –  yesterday Marie Wikle and Rema aunty made two donations of $20 each (thank you SO MUCH Marie and aunty the support from both of you means the world to me ) which brings my total raised to $1 900 only $600 more to raise  🙂

Today I was thinking about girls’ education and why it’s important to educate girls and I came with 5 reasons. Take a look:

5 Reasons to Educate Girls

  1. Educating girls prevents child marriages – Girls with 8 years of education are 4 times less likely to be married as children(source: Malala Fund)
  2. Educating girls helps control population growth – Girls with 8 years of education will have 2.2 less children (source: Malala Fund)
  3. Educating girls reduces the chances of child mortality – A child born to a literate mother is 50% more likely to survive past the age of 5 (source: UNESCO)
  4. Educating girls has a generational impact – Educated mothers are more than twice as likely to send their children to school (source: UNICEF)
  5. Girls who have an education will become women who have a higher earning potential – A girl with an extra year of education can earn 20% more as an adult (source: The World Bank)

Ready to help educate girls? If so, visit https://www.classy.org/EducateGenerations and please make a donation to my Educate Generations campaign benefiting the Malala Fund. Thank you SO MUCH for all your support in advance.

Day 1027: Women, Girls and the need for Self-respect

We need to teach women and girls self-respect–that’s what I keep learning

It’s 2  : 07  PM on day 1027 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, stretch my hamstrings,  brush my teeth,  feed myself  All Bran Flakes for breakfast, read Joshua 10, publish my Disability of the Day feature,  practice typing with both hands,  tweet and Facebook about my campaign – still no luck – and start reading An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting… by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski – I’m only a few pages in but I already love the book it’s all about how one person can make a difference in the life of another which as you know I wholeheartedly believe 🙂

Two days ago I was on Twitter and I came across this tweet Wet tata’s courtesy of sprinklers with a picture of this woman’s boobs attached I was taken aback by her apparent lack of self-respect whatever happened to modesty and respect for one’s body we need to teach girls and women that they have more to offer the world than their bodies. Are you a person you can be proud of today because people taught you self-respect back in the day?
